Neuronen sind die Zellen des Nervensystems, die elektrische Signale übertragen.
 Sie kommen in verschiedenen Formen und Größen vor, haben jedoch im Allgemeinen einige gemeinsame Merkmale.
 Alle Neuronen haben einen Zellkörper, der auch als Soma bezeichnet wird und den Zellkern enthält.
 Die meisten Neuronen haben auch Dendriten und ein Axon, das vom Zellkörper ausgeht.
 Dendriten sind oft stark verzweigt und empfangen Signale von anderen Neuronen an Knotenpunkten, die als Synapsen bezeichnet werden.
 Das Axon hingegen überträgt Signale an Neuronen und andere Zellen.
 Der Axonhügel, in dem der Zellkörper auf das Axon trifft, erzeugt das Aktionspotential, die primäre Form der elektrischen Signalübertragung im Nervensystem.
 Axone werden oft in eine fetthaltige Myelinscheide gehüllt, die von Stützzellen namens Glia gebildet wird.
 Diese isolieren sie und helfen, das elektrische Signal während der Übertragung aufrechtzuerhalten.
 Die Knoten von Ranvier, Lücken in der Myelinscheide, sind Regionen, in denen das Aktionspotential im Axon wiederholt regeneriert wird.
 Am Ende des Axons befindet sich das Terminal mit synaptischen Vesikeln, die mit Neurotransmitter-Molekülen gefüllt sind.
 Wenn ein Aktionspotential das Terminal erreicht, wird der Neurotransmitter in die synaptische Spalte, eine Region zwischen Zellen und einer Synapse, freigesetzt.
 Abhängig von der Art des Kanals kann der Neurotransmitter dabei helfen, das Signal an die nächste Zelle zu übertragen.

 Neuronen sind der wichtigste Zelltyp im Nervensystem, der elektrochemische Signale erzeugt und weiterleitet. Sie kommunizieren miteinander hauptsächlich durch Neurotransmitter an bestimmten Knotenpunkten, den Synapsen. Neuronen gibt es in vielen Formen, die oft von ihren Funktionen abhängig sind. Die meisten teilen sich jedoch drei Hauptstrukturen: ein Axon und Dendriten, die sich von einem Zellkörper erstrecken.
 
 <h4>Die Struktur und Funktionsweise von Neuronen</h4>
 
 Der neuronale Zellkörper, das Soma, beherbergt den Zellkern und die Organellen, welche für die Zellfunktion lebenswichtig sind. Vom Zellkörper aus erstrecken sich dünne Strukturen, die für den Empfang und das Senden von Signalen spezialisiert sind. Die Dendriten empfangen typischerweise Signale, während das Axon die Signale an andere Zellen, wie z.B. andere Neuronen oder Muskelzellen, weiterleitet. Der Punkt, an dem ein Neuron eine Verbindung zu einer anderen Zelle herstellt, nennt man Synapse.
 
 Die Neuronen erhalten ihre Inputs vor allem an postsynaptischen Endungen, die sich häufig auf den Spitzen befinden. Das sind kleine kegelförmige Auftreibungen, die aus den Dendriten herausragen. Diese spezialisierten Strukturen enthalten Rezeptoren für Neurotransmitter und andere chemische Signale. Da die Dendriten oft stark verzweigt sind, können einige Neuronen zehntausende von Inputs empfangen. Am häufigsten empfangen Neuronen Signale in ihren Dendriten. Sie können aber auch Synapsen in anderen Bereichen, z.B. im Zellkörper, besitzen.
 
 Das an den Synapsen empfangene Signal wandert durch die Dendriten zum Soma, wo die Zelle es verarbeiten kann und bestimmt, ob die Nachricht weitergeleitet werden muss oder nicht. Das Aktionspotential ist das wichtigste elektrische Signal, das von den Neuronen erzeugt wird. Es leitet die Information an die nächste Zelle weiter. Es wird zunächst am Axonhügel erzeugt, das ist die Verbindung zwischen dem Soma und dem Axon.
 
 Die Länge der Axone variiert, kann aber ziemlich lang sein. Einige reichen zum Beispiel vom Rückenmark bis zum Fuß. Längere Axone sind normalerweise in eine fetthaltige Myelinscheide eingewickelt, die das Axon isoliert und dabei hilft, das elektrische Signal aufrechtzuerhalten. Die Myelinscheide wird von Gliazellen, ein weiterer Zelltyp des Nervensystems, gebildet. In den myelinisierten Axonen wird das Aktionspotential an Ranvierschen Schnürringen regeneriert — aufeinanderfolgende Lücken im Myelin — bis es das Ende des Axons oder den präsynaptischen Terminal erreicht.
 
 Die präsynaptischen Enden besitzt Vesikel, die Neurotransmitter enthalten. Aktionspotentiale lösen in den Vesikeln die Exozytose aus, indem sie mit der Zellmembran verschmelzen und so Neurotransmitter in den synaptischen Spalt freisetzen. Das ist die Lücke zwischen den Zellen an einer Synapse. Verschiedene Neurotransmitter können unterschiedliche Wirkungen auf die postsynaptische Zelle haben. Eine exzitatorische Synapse erhöht die Chancen, ein Aktionspotenzial der postsynaptischen Zelle auszulösen, während eine hemmende Synapse die Chancen auf ein Aktionspotenzial verringert.
 
 <h4>Neuronale Morphologie</h4>
 
 Die allgemeine Form der Neuronen—ihre Morphologie—kann dramatisch variieren und hängt oft von ihren Funktionen ab. Einige Neuronen haben wenige Dendriten und ein einziges Axon, andere haben sehr verzweigte dendritische Äste, während andere Axone haben, die die Länge des gesamten Organismus durchziehen können. Die verschiedenen Morphologien werden oft zur Definition des Neuronentyps verwendet. Die Anzahl der Inputs (synaptische Verbindungen) kann beeinflussen, wie eine Zelle auf Signale reagiert. Daher ist die Morphologie der Dendriten und die Anzahl der Synapsen, die sie enthalten, ein wichtiges Merkmal, das den Neuronentyp bestimmen kann. Im peripheren Nervensystem können die Dendriten auch das rezeptive Feld einer Zelle definieren, das heißt umfasst den physischen Raum auf dem Körper, für den sie empfindlich sind.
 
 <h4>Die Kunst der Visualisierung von neuronalen Strukturen</h4>
 
 Am Ende des 19. und Anfang des 20. Jahrhunderts leistete der spanische Anatom Santiago Ramon y Cajal Pionierarbeit bei der Entdeckung einzelner Neuronen und lieferte grundlegende Erkenntnisse über die Beschaffenheit dieser Neuronen. Er schuf verblüffende Darstellungen von Zellen, die auch noch heute eine beträchtliche Menge an Details bieten. Mit der nach dem italienischen Biologen Camillo Golgi entwickelten und benannten Färbetechnik konnte er die Struktur vieler verschiedener Zellarten im Gehirn aufdecken. Er skizzierte auch einige der grundlegenden Verbindungen neuronaler Schaltkreise. Das sind Netzwerke von Neuronen, die gemeinsam aktiviert werden, um bestimmte Informationen zu verarbeiten.

how neurons send signals

Neurons send signals through a clear set of structures that let them receive, process, and pass on information. They are the main cells of the nervous system and use electrochemical signals to communicate. Neurons also talk to other cells through neurotransmitters at junctions called synapses.

Most neurons share three main parts: a cell body, also called the soma, dendrites, and an axon. The soma holds the nucleus and other organelles needed for cell function. Dendrites usually receive signals, while the axon carries signals onward to other neurons or to muscle cells.

Neurons receive input mainly at postsynaptic terminals, which are often found on small bumps called spines on dendrites. These spines contain receptors for neurotransmitters and other chemical signals. Because dendrites can branch a great deal, some neurons can collect tens of thousands of inputs. Neurons can also have synapses on other parts of the cell, such as the cell body.

Signals that arrive at synapses move down the dendrite to the soma. The cell then processes the message and decides whether to pass it on. If it does, the main electrical signal, called an action potential, starts at the axon hillock, the junction between the soma and the axon.

Axons can vary in length and may be very long. Some extend from the spinal cord all the way to the foot. Longer axons are often wrapped in a fatty myelin sheath, which insulates the axon and helps keep the electrical signal going. Glia, another type of nervous system cell, make the myelin sheath.

In myelinated axons, the action potential is regenerated at each node of Ranvier, which is one of the repeated gaps in the myelin. The signal continues this way until it reaches the presynaptic terminal at the end of the axon. That terminal contains vesicles filled with neurotransmitters.

When an action potential arrives, the vesicles fuse with the cell membrane and release neurotransmitters into the synaptic cleft, the gap between cells at a synapse. Different neurotransmitters can affect the postsynaptic cell in different ways. An excitatory synapse makes an action potential more likely, while an inhibitory synapse makes it less likely.

Neuron shape, or morphology, can vary a lot and often matches function. Some neurons have few dendritic processes and one axon, while others have highly branched dendritic trees or axons that span the length of the organism. Scientists often use these shapes to help define neuron types.

The number of synaptic connections also affects how a cell responds to signals. For neurons in the peripheral nervous system, dendrites can help define the receptive field, which is the physical area of the body that the cell senses. The form of the dendrites and the number of synapses they contain are important clues about neuron function.

The study of neuron shape was advanced by Santiago Ramon y Cajal in the late 19th and early 20th century. He traced individual neurons and made detailed drawings that still show a great deal of information. Using the staining method developed by Camillo Golgi, he was able to map many cell types in the brain and sketch basic neuronal circuits, which are networks of neurons that work together to process specific information.
