Gliazellen sind die unterstützenden Zellen im Nervensystem.
 Das Zentralnervensystem oder ZNS enthält eine Vielzahl von Gliazellen.
 Der größte und am häufigsten vorkommende Typ sind Astrozyten.
 Diese Zellen haben viele Funktionen, von denen eine darin besteht, die Blut-Hirn-Schranke aufrechtzuerhalten.
 Eine andere Art, Oligodendrozyten, mit kleineren Zellkörpern und weniger Prozessen, bildet die Myelinscheide entlang der Länge der Axionen.
 Die wenigsten und kleinsten Zellen, Mikroglia, sind an phagozytischen Prozessen beteiligt, die Krankheitserreger und Zelltrümmer verschlingen.
 Zusätzlich enthält das periphere Nervensystem oder PNS Satellitenzellen, die Neuronenzellkörper umgeben und wie Astrozyten im ZNS funktionieren.
 In ähnlicher Weise sind Schwann-Zellen die Zellen, die wie Oligodendrozyten wirken und dabei helfen, Hüllen um periphere Axone zu bilden.
 Im weiteren Verlauf der Forschung ist klar, dass Gliazellen nicht nur im Nervensystem haften bleiben.

<h4>Überblick</h4>
 
 Die Gliazellen sind einer der beiden Haupttypen der Zellen im Nervensystem. Zu den Gliazellen gehören im zentralen Nervensystem die Astrozyten, Oligodendrozyten, Mikroglia und Ependymzellen. Im peripheren Nervensystem gehören dazu Satelliten-und Schwann-Zellen. Diese Zellen kommunizieren nicht wie die Neuronen über elektrische Signale, tragen aber praktisch zu jedem anderen Aspekt der Funktion des Nervensystems bei. Beim Menschen ist die Anzahl der Gliazellen ungefähr gleich der Anzahl der Neuronen im Gehirn.
 
 <h4>Die Gliazellen des zentralen Nervensystems</h4>
 
 Die Glia im zentralen Nervensystem (ZNS) umfassen Astrozyten, Oligodendrozyten, Mikroglia und Ependymzellen. Astrozyten sind der am häufigsten vorkommende Typ von Gliazellen. Man findet sie in organisierten, nicht überlappenden Mustern im gesamten Gehirn, wo sie nah mit Neuronen und Kapillaren assoziieren. Astrozyten spielen zahlreiche Rollen in der Gehirnfunktion, wie zum Beispiel die Regulierung des Blutflusses und der Stoffwechselprozesse, die synaptische Ionen -und pH-Homöostase sowie die Aufrechterhaltung der Blut-Hirn-Schranke.
 
 Eine weitere spezialisierte Gliazelle, der Oligodendrozyt, bildet die Myelinscheide, die die neuronalen Axone im ZNS umgibt. Oligodendrozyten haben lange zelluläre Fortsätze, die sich mehrfach um die Axone wickeln, um diese Hülle zu bilden. Die Myelinscheide ist für die korrekte Leitung der neuronalen Signale erforderlich und erhöht signifikant die Geschwindigkeit, mit der sich diese Botschaften bewegen.
 
 Mikroglia, die Makrophagen des ZNS, sind der kleinste Gliazelltyp und spezialisiert auf die Phagozytose sowohl von Krankheitserregern als auch von Zelltrümmern. Sie schützen das ZNS vor Infektionserregern und Toxinen und formen die Synapsen während der Entwicklung. Obwohl die Mikroglia als Gliazellen betrachtet werden, haben sie im Vergleich zu anderen Gliazelltypen einen einzigartigen und separaten Ursprung. Astrozyten und Oligodendrozyten werden von radialen Gliazellen produziert, während Mikroglia aus dem Dottersack stammen und bereits früh in der Embryonalentwicklung in den Embryo wandern.
 
 Zuletzt gibt es noch Ependymzellen, welche hochprismatische Zellen mit zilienähnlichen Ausstülpungen, welche die Ventrikel auskleiden und dort die Rückenmarksflüssigkeit (Liquor) produzieren . Die Ependymzellen bilden eine Barriere zwischen Gehirn und Liquor und filtern potentiell schädliche Substanzen heraus. Wie Astrozyten und Oligodendrozyten stammen Ependymzellen aus radialen Gliazellen, die sich in der Nähe der Seitenventrikel befinden.
 
 <h4>Die Gliazellen des peripheren Nervensystems</h4>
 
 Im peripheren Nervensystem (PNS) gibt es ähnliche, aber verschiedene Typen an Gliazellen. Beispielsweise werden Funktionen, die von Astrozyten des ZNS ausgeführt werden, im PNS hauptsächlich von Satellitenzellen ausgeführt. Diese Gliazellen stellen den Nervenzellen, mit sind die assoziieren, Struktur, Polsterung und Nährstoffe zur Verfügung. Eine weitere Gliazelle des PNS, sind die Schwann-Zellen. Sie funktioniert ähnlich den Oligodendrozyten des ZNS, indem sie eine Myelinhülle um die neuronalen Axone bildet. Wie die Myelinisierung im ZNS sorgt die Axon-Myelinisierung des PNS für die notwendige Isolierung und Leitfähigkeit zur korrekten Übertragung der elektrischen Signale.
 
 <h4>Die Bedeutung der Gliazellen für Gesundheit und Krankheit</h4>
 
 Gliazellen sind wichtige Schützer und Regulatoren des Nervensystems. Sie erhalten nicht nur die homöostatischen Bedingungen und tragen zur Routinefunktion des Gehirns bei, sondern reagieren auch auf Verletzungen, Infektionen und Krankheiten des Nervensystems. Darüber hinaus erfüllen die Gliazellen während der embryonalen Entwicklung des Nervensystems kritische Funktionen. Diese Zellen tragen auch zur Entfernung unnötiger neuronaler Verbindungen bei, ein Vorgang der Synapseneliminierung genannt wird. Aufgrund der Bedeutung von Gliazellen für zahlreiche Aspekte der Gehirnfunktion können Defekte in einer oder mehreren Populationen der Gliazellen zu schweren und schwächenden neurologischen Erkrankungen führen. Dazu gehören Entwicklungsstörungen, Alzheimer, Parkinson, Multiple Sklerose und viele andere.
 
 Während der Entwicklung bieten Gliazellen ein Gerüst für Neuronen, damit ihre Axone richtig innervieren und wachsen. Später im Leben können Traumata oder neurodegenerative Erkrankungen zum Verlust von nicht regenerierbaren neuronalen Verbindungen führen, was eine Funktionsstörung oder Lähmungen zur Folge hat.

Glial Cells

Glial cells support the nervous system and work alongside neurons. They are one of the two main cell types in the nervous system. Unlike neurons, glia do not send electrical signals, but they help with nearly every other part of nervous system function. In humans, glial cells are about as numerous as neurons in the brain.

In the central nervous system, glia include astrocytes, oligodendrocytes, microglia, and ependymal cells. Astrocytes are the most common glial cells. They form organized, non-overlapping patterns in the brain and stay close to neurons and capillaries. They help regulate blood flow, support metabolism, maintain ion and pH balance around synapses, and help maintain the blood-brain barrier.

Oligodendrocytes make the myelin sheath in the central nervous system. This sheath wraps around neuronal axons many times and acts as insulation. Myelin helps nerve signals travel correctly and much faster. Microglia are the smallest glial cells and are known as the macrophages of the CNS. They remove pathogens and debris by phagocytosis and also help prune synapses during development. Unlike other glia, microglia come from the yolk sac and enter the embryo early in development.

Ependymal cells are cube-shaped cells with cilia-like projections that line the ventricles. They produce cerebrospinal fluid, or CSF, and form a barrier between the brain and the CSF. This barrier helps filter out harmful substances. Like astrocytes and oligodendrocytes, ependymal cells come from radial glia near the lateral ventricles.

The peripheral nervous system also has glial cells. Satellite cells support the neuronal cell bodies they surround by providing structure, cushioning, and nutrients. Schwann cells do for peripheral axons what oligodendrocytes do in the CNS. They form myelin around axons and help insulation and conductivity for electrical signaling.

Glia are important for health, development, and disease. They protect the nervous system, keep internal conditions stable, and respond to injury, infection, and disease. They also help guide neuron migration and axon growth during embryonic development. Because they help remove extra neuronal connections through synaptic pruning, problems in glial cells can contribute to developmental disorders, Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis, and other serious conditions. Damage later in life can also lead to lost connections that are difficult or impossible to replace, which may cause impaired function or paralysis.
