Eine motorische Einheit bezieht sich auf ein Motoneuron im Rückenmark und die Population von Muskelfasern, die es innerviert.
 Während jede Skelettmuskelfaser nur von einem Motoneuron innerviert wird, können sich die Axone jedes Motoneurons in eine Reihe von Enden verzweigen, die im gesamten Muskel neuromuskuläre Verbindungen bilden.
 Somit führt die Stimulation einer einzelnen motorischen Einheit zu einer schwachen Kontraktion des gesamten Muskels.
 Abhängig von der erforderlichen Kontrollstufe kann sich die Anzahl der Fasern pro Einheit von einigen wenigen Muskeln, die eine Feinbewegung erfordern, bis zu mehreren hundert Muskeln, die weniger exakt belastet sind, variieren.

Motor Units

Die motorische Einheit besteht aus zwei Hauptkomponenten: einem einzigen efferenten Motorneuron (d.h. ein Neuron, das Impulse vom Zentralnervensystem weiterleitet) und allen Muskelfasern, die es innerviert. Das Motorneuron kann mehrere Muskelfasern, welche einzelne Zellen sind, innervieren. Aber nur ein Motorneuron innerviert eine einzelne Muskelfaser.
 
 Die unteren Motoneuronen sind efferente Neuronen. Sie kontrollieren die Skelettmuskeln, die am häufigsten vorkommenden Muskelart im Körper. Die Zellkörper der unteren Motoneuronen befinden sich im Rückenmark oder im Hirnstamm. Die Motorneuronen im Hirnstamm leiten Nervensignale über den Hirnnerv weiter und steuern vor allem die Muskeln im Kopf und Nacken. Die unteren Motorneuronen, die vom Rückenmark ausgehen, senden Signale entlang des Spinalnervs und steuern hauptsächlich die Muskeln in den Gliedmaßen und im Rumpf.
 
 Wenn ein unteres Motoneuron ein Aktionspotential abfeuert, kontrahieren alle Skelettmuskelzellen, die das Neuron innerviert. Daher sind die motorische Einheiten die funktionelle Einheiten der Skelettmuskulatur.
 
 Die Größe einer motorischen Einheit oder die Anzahl der Muskelfasern, die das untere Motorneuron innerviert, ist abhängig von der Größe des Muskels und der Geschwindigkeit und Präzision, welche die Bewegung erfordert. Muskeln in den Augen und Fingern, die eine schnelle und präzise Steuerung erfordern, werden im Allgemeinen von kleinen motorischen Einheiten gesteuert. In diesen Einheiten verbinden sich die Motoneuronen mit einer kleineren Anzahl an Muskelfasern. Im Gegensatz dazu sind die motorischen Einheiten der Glieder -und Rumpfbewegungen im Allgemeinen groß und bestehen aus vielen Muskelfasern.

Motor units control skeletal muscle movement. A motor unit includes one efferent motor neuron, which carries signals away from the central nervous system, and all of the muscle fibers it innervates. A single motor neuron can connect with multiple muscle fibers, but each muscle fiber is innervated by only one motor neuron.

Lower motor neurons are the efferent neurons that control skeletal muscle, the most abundant type of muscle in the body. Their cell bodies are found in the spinal cord or brain stem. Neurons in the brain stem send signals through cranial nerves and mainly control muscles in the head and neck.

Lower motor neurons in the spinal cord send signals through spinal nerves. These neurons mainly control muscles in the limbs and body trunk. When a lower motor neuron fires an action potential, all of the skeletal muscle cells it innervates contract at the same time.

Motor units are the functional units of skeletal muscle. Their size depends on the size of the muscle and on how fast and precise the movement must be. Muscles in the eyes and fingers usually have small motor units for rapid, precise control, while motor units for limb and trunk movement are generally large and contain many muscle fibers.
