Threats to Biodiversity

Obwohl sich die Artenvielfalt im Laufe der geologischen Zeit verändert hat, steigt und fällt sie infolge von fünf großen Massensterben im Laufe der Erdgeschichte.
 Das sechste Massensterben, das als gegenwärtiges Holozän-Aussterben bekannt ist, kann menschlichen Aktivitäten zugeschrieben werden Die Explosion der menschlichen Bevölkerung ist der Kern des gegenwärtigen Verlusts an biologischer Vielfalt, der zum Verlust von Lebensräumen, zu Übernutzung, zur Einführung invasiver Arten und zum globalen Klimawandel führt.
 Der stark gestiegene Bedarf an Nahrungsmitteln und Unterkünften für den Menschen hat bei vielen Arten zu einem Verlust des Lebensraums geführt.
 Die Entwaldung und Umwandlung von Land für die Landwirtschaft drängt Arten aus ihren natürlichen Lebensräumen in kleinere und fragmentierte Gebiete mit weniger Ressourcen und größeren Überlebensherausforderungen.
 Viele Arten, die für Ernährung und Medizin verwendet werden, werden über die Fähigkeit zur Erholung der Arten hinaus ausgebeutet.
 Dies ist auf eine hohe wirtschaftliche Nachfrage zurückzuführen, die von der Fortpflanzungsfähigkeit der Art nicht gedeckt wird.
 Darüber hinaus hat die Einführung invasiver Arten zu drastischen Veränderungen der Ökosysteme geführt, die einheimische Arten durch Raubbau und Konkurrenz um Ressourcen entfernen.
 Invasive Arten verursachen ohne natürliche Feinde einen raschen Rückgang der Artenvielfalt.
 Schließlich hat der Anstieg der globalen Emissionen von Kohlendioxid und anderen Treibhausgasen zu einem schrittweisen Anstieg der globalen Durchschnittstemperatur geführt.
 Dieser Effekt hat die Wohnfläche vieler Arten verringert und die Wander- und sonstigen saisonalen Aktivitätsmuster verändert.

Im Laufe der geologischen Geschichte gab es fünf schwerwiegende Ereignisse, die zu einer extremen Dezimierung der Artenvielfalt führten, worauf ein Wiederaufleben von Arten folgte, die sich an die neuen Bedingungen angepasst haben. In der gegenwärtigen geologischen Epoche, dem Holozän, ist ein sechstes Aussterben im Gange. Dieses Massensterben wird auf menschliche Aktivitäten zurückgeführt und daher vorläufig als Anthropozän bezeichnet. Im Jahr 2019 erreichte die menschliche Bevölkerung 7,7 Milliarden Menschen und wird bis 2060 voraussichtlich 10 Milliarden umfassen. Nach der Biomasse (der tatsächlichen Masse einer bestimmten Art) macht der Mensch 36% der Säugetiere der Erde aus, während der Viehbestand 60% und die wilden Säugetiere nur 4% ausmachen. Ungefähr 70% aller Vögel sind Geflügel, daher sind nur 30% wilde Vögel.
 
 Um den menschlichen Einfluss auf die biologische Vielfalt und das Klima zu minimieren, müssen wir verstehen, welche unserer Tätigkeiten problematisch sind, und die Bedürfnisse der menschlichen Zivilisation und des Fortschritts mit einem nachhaltigen Plan für künftige Generationen in Einklang bringen. Einige der größten Bedrohungen für die biologische Vielfalt sind der Verlust von Lebensraum durch menschliche Entwicklung, die Überfarmung und die erhöhten Kohlenstoffdioxidemissionen durch Fabriken und Fahrzeuge.
 
 <h4>Case Studies</h4>
 
 Eine Fallstudie wo man den Einfluss des Menschen auf das Wetter sieht, findet sich in der als Dust-Bowl bekannten Katastrophe der 1930er Jahre. In den 1920er und 30er Jahren zog eine große Anzahl von Landwirten in die Great Plains (USA) und holzten das Land ab. Dabei entfernten sie die einheimischen, bodenbewachsenden Pflanzen, um Nutzpflanzen anzubauen, die im Allgemeinen ein flaches Wurzelsystem hatten. In einem Gebiet, dessen Zentrum in Kansas und im Norden von Texas liegt und sich im Norden nach Kanada und im Süden durch Texas erstreckt, führte eine Kombination aus extremen Dürrebedingungen und schlecht durchdachten landwirtschaftlichen Praktiken zu Staubstürmen, die Staub bis in die nordöstlichen Bundesstaaten brachten. Letztendlich kam es aufgrund dieser Stürme und der unglücklicherweise zur gleichen Zeit vorkommenden schlechten Wirtschaft zu einer allgemeinen Nahrungsmittelknappheit, weshalb viele Familien ihre Farmen aufgeben mussten. Es ist mittlerweile klar geworden, dass landwirtschaftliche Betriebe gut geplant werden müssen, damit das Land richtig bewirtschaftet wird um einzelnen Pflanzenarten, die nicht natürlich angepasst sind, das Wachstum zu ermöglichen und den Verlust der biologischen Vielfalt miteinzubeziehen.
 
 Ein weniger extremes Beispiel ist im Yellowstone-Nationalpark in den Vereinigten Staaten zu sehen. Die Wolfspopulationen nahmen nach Beginn der Wanderung der menschlichen Population in den Westen radikal ab. Als Folge davon nahm die Population von Beutetieren wie dem Gabelbock und dem Maultierhirsch zu. Da diese Tiere dazu neigen, junge Espen-Sprösslinge zu fressen, führte dies zu einem Rückgang der Espenbäume. Zu den resultierenden Auswirkungen dieses Baumverlusts gehören die verstärkte Bodenerosion und der Verlust des Lebensraums für Vögel und andere Tiere. Unterstützung für diese vorgeschlagene Reihe an Ereignissen kommt durch die kürzlich Wiedereinführung der Wölfe in den Yellowstone, die mit einer beobachteten Erholung der Espen-Population im Park korreliert. Wenn diese Korrelation wirklich darauf hindeutet, dass die Espe sich durch die Wiedereinführung der Wölfe erholt, unterstützt diese Forschung das allgemeine Konzept, dass die Raubtiere an der Spitze (oben) für die Biodiversität der Ökosysteme wichtig sind.
 
 Die Erhaltung der Biodiversität ist unerlässlich, um die Ökosysteme im Gleichgewicht zu halten, vorhersehbare Wettermuster zu verlängern und Rohmaterial für die Erforschung neuer industrieller und medizinischer Produkte zu gewinnen.

Human activity is changing biodiversity and pushing Earth toward a sixth extinction event. Earlier mass extinctions ended many species, and then new species spread into the changed environment. Today, the Holocene epoch is seeing a mass extinction linked to human actions, and it is often called the Anthropocene.

Human numbers and human biomass show how large this impact has become. In 2019, the human population reached 7.7 billion and is projected to rise to 10 billion by 2060. By biomass, humans make up about 36% of Earth’s mammals, livestock make up 60%, and wild mammals only 4%. About 70% of all birds are poultry, so only 30% are wild birds.

Several common activities threaten biodiversity. Habitat loss can happen when land is cleared for human development. Over-farming can also damage ecosystems. In addition, factories and vehicles release carbon dioxide, which adds to climate problems. To reduce these effects, people need to understand which activities cause harm and find a sustainable balance between human progress and the needs of future generations.

The Dust Bowl is one clear case of human impact on land and weather. In the 1920s and 1930s, many farmers moved to the Great Plains and clear cut the land. They removed native ground-cover plants so they could plant crops with shallow roots. Then extreme drought and poor farming practices combined to create dust storms that spread debris as far as the northeastern states. Food shortages followed, and many families had to leave their farms.

The Dust Bowl shows that farmland must be planned carefully if it is to support single crop species that are not naturally adapted to the area. A different example comes from Yellowstone National Park. After people moved west, wolf populations dropped sharply. Prey animals such as pronghorn and mule deer increased, and they ate young Aspen saplings. Aspen trees declined, which led to more erosion and less habitat for birds and other animals.

Wolves were later reintroduced to Yellowstone, and the Aspen population has since shown a rebound. If this pattern is truly caused by the return of wolves, it supports the idea that apex predators help keep ecosystems balanced. Biodiversity also matters because it helps preserve stable ecosystems, supports more predictable weather patterns, and keeps raw material available for new industrial and medical products.
