Physical and Chemical Properties of Matter

Physikalische Eigenschaften der Materie können gemessen und beobachtet werden, ohne die Zusammensetzung oder Identität der Materie zu verändern.Geruch, Geschmack, Farbe, Aussehen, Härte, Dichte, Schmelz-und Siedepunkte, sowie elektrische Leitfähigkeit, sind alles Beispiele der physikalischen Eigenschaften. Einige dieser physikalischen Eigenschaften können beobachtet werden, ohne den physikalischen Zustand der Materie zu verändern. Wenn wir also sagen, dass Helium leichter als Luft ist, beziehen wir uns auf eine physikalische Eigenschaft.In ähnlicher Weise ist auch der Geruch von Benzin eine physikalische Eigenschaft. Andere physikalische Eigenschaften können nur beobachtet werden, wenn die Materie physikalische Veränderungen erfährt. Zum Beispiel besteht reines Gold in seinem festen Zustand aus dicht gepackten Goldatomen.Wenn es jedoch bei hoher Temperatur geschmolzen wird, ändert es seinen Zustand von einem festen in einen flüssigen Zustand. Diese Flüssigkeit besteht jedoch immer noch aus Goldatomen, es handelt sich also um eine physikalische Veränderung. Ähnlich verhält es sich, wenn flüssiges Wasser zu festem Eis gefriert, da bleibt die chemische Zusammensetzung sowohl des Wassers als auch des Eises gleich.Physikalische Veränderungen modifizieren also nur den Zustand der Materie oder die physikalischen Bedingungen ohne die chemische Zusammensetzung zu verändern. Zerkleinern, Mahlen, Schneiden, Mischen, Magnetisieren oder Entmagnetisieren sind andere übliche Methoden, um den physikalischen Zustand der Materie zu verändern. Chemische Eigenschaften der Materie hingegen sind Merkmale, die nur gemessen und beobachtet werden können, wenn die Substanz eine Änderung der chemischen Zusammensetzung aufweist.Korrosion, Brennbarkeit, Toxizität, Azidität und chemische Reaktivität sind Beispiele für chemische Eigenschaften der Materie. Um eine chemische Eigenschaft zu identifizieren, suchen wir nach einer chemischen Veränderung. Chemische Veränderungen beinhalten chemische Reaktionen und können oft durch eine Veränderung der Farbe oder des Geruchs beobachtet werden.Zum Beispiel, wenn ein Kupferpfennig Luft und Wasser ausgesetzt wird, gibt es eine chemische Veränderung. Das Kupfer unterzieht sich einer Reihe chemischer Reaktionen, von denen jene hier gezeigt wird, bei der sich eine Schicht blau-grüner Patina auf einer ansonsten natürlich braunen Münze bildet. So entstehen durch chemische Veränderungen völlig neue Formen der Materie, die sich von dem vorherigen Zustand unterscheiden.Zum Beispiel ist die Brennbarkeit von Benzin eine chemische Eigenschaft, die sich aus den chemischen Veränderungen in der Zusammensetzung von Benzin nachdem Verbrennen ergibt, und es sich dabei in völlig neue Substanzen verwandelt hauptsächlich Kohlendioxid und Wasser.

Die Merkmale, die es uns ermöglichen, unterschiedliche Stoffe voneinander zu unterscheiden, werden auch Materialeigenschaften genannt. <h4>Physikalische Eigenschaften von Materie</h4> Eine physikalische Eigenschaft beschreibt ein Merkmal der Materie, welches nicht mit einer Änderung ihrer chemischen Zusammensetzung verbunden ist. Beispiele für physikalische Eigenschaften sind Dichte, Farbe, Härte, Schmelz- und Siedepunkte sowie elektrische Leitfähigkeit. Wir können einige physikalische Eigenschaften wie Dichte und Farbe beobachten, ohne den physikalischen Zustand der beobachteten Materie zu verändern. Andere physikalische Eigenschaften, wie beispielsweise die Schmelztemperatur von Eisen oder der Gefrierpunkt von Wasser, können nur beobachtet werden, während die Materie eine physikalische Veränderung erfährt. Eine physikalische Veränderung ist eine Änderung des Zustands oder der Eigenschaften einer Materie ohne damit einhergehende Änderung ihrer chemischen Zusammensetzung (der ?Identität? der in der Materie enthaltenen Substanzen). Wir beobachten beispielsweise eine physikalische Veränderung, wenn Wachs schmilzt, sich Zucker im Kaffee auflöst und Dampf zu flüssigem Wasser kondensiert. Weitere Beispiele für physikalische Veränderungen sind das Magnetisieren und Entmagnetisieren von Metallen (wie es bei gängigen Etiketten zur Diebstahlsicherung der Fall ist) oder das Mahlen von Feststoffen zu Pulver. In jedem dieser Beispiele kommt es zu einer Änderung des physikalischen Zustands, der Form oder der Eigenschaften des Stoffes, jedoch nicht zu einer Änderung seiner chemischen Zusammensetzung. <h4>Chemische Eigenschaften der Materie</h4> Die Umwandlung einer ?Materieart? in eine andere (oder die Unfähigkeit, sich zu verändern) ist eine chemische Eigenschaft. Beispiele für chemische Eigenschaften sind Entflammbarkeit, Toxizität, Säuregehalt, Reaktivität (viele Arten) und Verbrennungswärme. Eisen beispielsweise verbindet sich in Gegenwart von Wasser mit Sauerstoff und bildet Rost; Chrom hingegen oxidiert nicht. Nitroglycerin ist sehr gefährlich, da es leicht explodiert; Neon stellt nahezu keine Gefahr dar, da es sehr reaktionsträge ist. Um eine chemische Eigenschaft zu identifizieren, suchen wir nach einer chemischen Veränderung. Bei einer chemischen Veränderung entstehen immer eine oder mehrere Arten von Materie, die sich von der vor der Veränderung vorhandenen Materie unterscheiden. Bei der Bildung von Rost handelt es sich um eine chemische Veränderung, da es sich bei Rost um eine andere Materie handelt als Eisen, Sauerstoff und Wasser, die vor der Rostbildung vorhanden waren. Bei der Explosion von Nitroglycerin handelt es sich um eine chemische Veränderung, da es sich bei den dabei entstehenden Gasen um ganz andere Stoffe als die ursprüngliche Substanz handelt. Weitere Beispiele für chemische Veränderungen sind Reaktionen, die in einem Labor durchgeführt werden (z.B. die Reaktion von Kupfer mit Salpetersäure), alle Formen der Verbrennung (Oxidation), das Reifen von Früchten sowie das Kochen, Verdauen oder Verrotten von Lebensmitteln. Matter can be identified by its properties, which are the features that help us tell one substance from another. These properties fall into two main groups: physical properties and chemical properties. Understanding the difference helps explain how matter changes.

A physical property is a feature of matter that is not linked to a change in chemical composition. Examples include density, color, hardness, melting point, boiling point, and electrical conductivity. Some physical properties can be observed without changing the state of the matter, such as density and color. Others appear only during a physical change, like the melting temperature of iron or the freezing temperature of water.

A physical change alters the state or form of matter without changing what the substance is made of. Wax melting, sugar dissolving in coffee, and steam condensing into liquid water are all physical changes. Magnetizing and demagnetizing metals, such as in anti-theft security tags, and grinding solids into powders are also physical changes. In each case, the material looks or behaves differently, but its chemical composition stays the same.

Chemical properties describe whether matter can change into a different type of matter, or resist that change. Common chemical properties include flammability, toxicity, acidity, reactivity, and heat of combustion. Iron reacts with oxygen and water to form rust, while chromium does not oxidize. Nitroglycerin explodes easily, but neon is very unreactive.

To identify a chemical property, we look for a chemical change. A chemical change produces one or more new kinds of matter that are different from the starting material. Rust formation is a chemical change because rust is not the same as iron, oxygen, or water. Nitroglycerin exploding is also a chemical change because the gases produced are different from the original substance. Other chemical changes include copper reacting with nitric acid, burning, fruit ripening, and food being cooked, digested, or rotting.
