Wenn ein Stein vom Hügel gestoßen wird, verliert er potentielle Energie, aber er gewinnt kinetische Energie, wenn er sich bewegt. Dies gilt auch für die Atome oder Moleküle, die ein Objekt ausmachen.Ein ruhendes Objekt besitzt immer noch kinetische Energie, weil seine Atome schwingen können. Diese Form der kinetischen Energie wird thermische Energie genannt. Ein Objekt hat eine höhere kinetische Energie und folglich höhere thermische Energie, wenn sich die Atome kräftiger bewegen.Dieses Objekt wird als heiß empfunden. Moleküle haben auch potentielle Energie, genannt chemische Energie, die mit der relativen Position von Elektronen und Kernen verbunden ist. Während einer Reaktion wird chemische Energie in andere Energieformen, wie zum Beispiel Licht, umgewandelt, oder es wird Energie freigesetzt, zum Beispiel in Form von Wärme.Die Menge der umgewandelten Energie hängt von der Molekularstruktur der Reaktante ab. In einer Gaslampe verbrennt Acetylen zu Kohlendioxid und Wasser, was eine große Menge an Energie als Licht freisetzt. Auf der anderen Seite, setzt die Zugabe von Natriumhydroxid zu Salzsäure eine kleinere Menge Energie in Form von Wärme frei.Um Energieveränderungen zu untersuchen, hilft es, das Universum in ein System"das den beobachteten Prozess enthält, und die Umgebung"die alles andere ist, zu trennen. Das System kann offen sein, was bedeutet, dass sowohl Energie als auch Masse zwischen dem System und der Umgebung ausgetauscht werden. Das System kann geschlossen werden, wobei nur Energie ausgetauscht wird, oder das System kann isoliert werden, wobei weder Masse noch Energie ausgetauscht werden.

Chemische Veränderungen und die damit einhergehenden Veränderungen der Energie sind wichtige Bestandteile des täglichen Lebens. Die Makronährstoffe in der Nahrung unterliegen Stoffwechselreaktionen, welche die notwendige Energie für unseren Organismus und seine Körperfunktionen liefern. Verschiedene Brennstoffe (Benzin, Erdgas, Kohle) werden verbrannt, um Energie für Transport, Heizung und Stromerzeugung zu erzeugen. Industrielle chemische Reaktionen verbrauchen enorme Energiemengen zur Herstellung von Rohstoffen (wie Eisen und Aluminium). Anschließend wird Energie verwendet um diese Rohstoffe zu nützlichen Produkten wie Autos, Wolkenkratzern und Brücken zu verarbeiten. Über 90 % der vom Menschen genutzten Energie stammen ursprünglich von der Sonne. Jeden Tag versorgt die Sonne die Erde mit fast der 10.000-fachen Energiemenge, die nötig wäre, um den gesamten Energiebedarf der Welt für diesen Tag zu decken. Die Herausforderung besteht weiterhin darin, Wege zu finden die einfallende Sonnenenergie so umzuwandeln und zu speichern, dass sie für Reaktionen oder chemische Prozesse genutzt werden kann die sowohl bequem als auch umweltfreundlich sind. Pflanzen und viele Bakterien gewinnen Sonnenenergie durch Photosynthese. Der Mensch setzt die in Pflanzen gespeicherte Energie frei, wenn er Holz, Kohle, Erdöl oder andere Pflanzenprodukte wie Ethanol verbrennt. Er nutzt diese Energie auch um seinen Körper mit Energie zu versorgen, beispielsweise indem er pflanzliche Nahrungsmittel zu sich nimmt. <h4>Thermochemie</h4> Die Grundideen eines wichtigen Wissenschaftsbereichs, der sich mit der Menge an Wärme befasst die bei chemischen und physikalischen Veränderungen aufgenommen oder abgegeben wird, nennt sich Thermochemie. Diese Konzepte haben in fast allen wissenschaftlichen und technischen Bereichen große Bedeutung. Lebensmittelwissenschaftler nutzen die Theorien der Thermochemie, um den Energiegehalt von Lebensmitteln zu bestimmen. Biologen untersuchen den Energiehaushalt lebender Organismen, beispielsweise die metabolische Verbrennung von Zucker zu Kohlendioxid und Wasser. Die Öl-, Gas- und Transportindustrie, Anbieter erneuerbarer Energien und viele andere unternehmen große Anstrengungen, bessere Methoden zur Energieerzeugung für gewerbliche und private Zwecke zu finden. Ingenieure streben danach die Energieeffizienz zu verbessern, bessere Möglichkeiten zur klimatisierung von Häusern zu finden, Lebensmittel und Getränke effizient zu kühlen und unter anderem den Energiebedarf von Computern und Elektronikgeräten und ihrer Kühlung zu decken. Das Verständnis thermochemischer Prinzipien ist für Chemiker, Physiker, Biologen, Geologen, Ingenieure und praktisch jede Person die wissenschaftlich arbeitet oder studiert von entscheidender Bedeutung. <h4>Energie</h4> Energie kann als die Fähigkeit definiert werden Wärme bereitzustellen oder Arbeit zu verrichten. Eine Art von Arbeit (w) ist der Prozess, Materie entgegen einer Gegenkraft zu bewegen. Beim Aufpumpen eines Fahrradreifens wird beispielsweise Materie (die Luft in der Pumpe) gegen die Gegenkraft der sich bereits im Reifen befindenden Luftteilchen bewegt. Wie Materie gibt es auch Energie in verschiedenen Formen. Ein Schema klassifiziert Energie in zwei Arten: potentielle Energie, die Energie, die ein Objekt aufgrund seiner relativen Position, Zusammensetzung oder seines Zustands hat und kinetische Energie, die Energie die ein Objekt aufgrund seiner Bewegung besitzt. Wasser an der Spitze eines Wasserfalls oder Staudamms verfügt aufgrund seiner Lage über potentielle Energie; Wenn es durch Generatoren nach unten fließt, verfügt es über kinetische Energie, die zur Verrichtung von Arbeit und zur Stromerzeugung in einem Wasserkraftwerk genutzt werden kann. Chemical reactions change matter and energy at the same time. A match lighting is a simple example. These energy changes are part of everyday life and appear in food, fuels, and industry.

Food provides energy through metabolic reactions. The macronutrients in food break down and help keep the body functioning. Fuels such as gasoline, natural gas, and coal are burned to produce energy for transportation, heating, and electricity generation.

Industrial chemical reactions also use large amounts of energy. That energy helps make raw materials like iron and aluminum. More energy is then needed to turn those materials into products such as cars, skyscrapers, and bridges.

Most energy used by humans comes from the sun. Every day, the sun sends Earth almost 10,000 times more energy than the world needs for that day. The challenge is to capture and store solar energy so it can drive chemical processes that are useful, convenient, and nonpolluting.

Plants and many bacteria capture solar energy through photosynthesis. Humans release stored energy by burning wood, coal, petroleum, or plant products such as ethanol. They also use this energy directly when they eat food that comes from plants.

Thermochemistry is the study of heat absorbed or released during chemical and physical changes. It is used to measure the energy content of foods and to study the energetics of living organisms, such as the breakdown of sugar into carbon dioxide and water. It also supports work in the oil, gas, transportation, and renewable energy industries, as well as in engineering.

Energy is the capacity to supply heat or do work. Work means causing matter to move against an opposing force, such as when air is pushed into a bicycle tire. Energy can be described as potential energy, which depends on position, composition, or condition, and kinetic energy, which depends on motion.

A waterfall or dam stores potential energy because of its position. When the water flows downward through generators, it has kinetic energy that can do work and produce electricity in a hydroelectric plant. A battery also stores potential energy because the chemicals inside it can produce electricity when needed.
