Periodic Classification of the Elements

Bei Hauptgruppenelementen, die mit Buchstaben versehene Gruppennummer ist gleich der Anzahl der Valenzelektronen und die Zeilennummer ist gleich der höchsten Hauptquantenzahl dieses Elements.Jedes Element in einer Gruppe hat die gleiche Anzahl an Elektronen zum Verbinden verfügbar. Weiter unten in der Gruppe, wird die Hauptquantenzahl um eins erhöht, während die Anzahl der Valenzelektronen gleich bleibt. Die beiden ganz linken Spalten des Periodensystems bilden den S-Block.Bei diesen Elementen, tritt das letzte Elektron in ein s-Orbital ein. Elemente der Gruppe 1, mit Ausnahme von Wasserstoff, werden als Alkalimetalle bezeichnet und sind extrem reaktiv, da sie nur ein Valenzelektron haben. Elemente der Gruppe zwei sind die Erdalkalimetalle, mit zwei Elektronen in der Valenzhülle.Die sechs Säulen am rechten Ende bilden den p Block. Die Valenzhülle dieser Elemente hat s-Orbitale vollständig besetzt und das letzte Elektron besetzt ein p-Orbital. Von Gruppe drei A bis Gruppe acht A, erhöht sich die Anzahl der Elektronen in p-Orbitalen um eins.Die Edelgase haben acht Valenzelektronen mit Ausnahme von Helium, das zum S Block gehört, und nur zwei Elektronen hat. Der d Block besteht aus den zehn Spalten, die zwischen dem s und p Block positioniert sind. Diese Elemente werden als Übergangsmetalle bezeichnet.Das letzte Elektron tritt in das d-Orbital ein, die Hauptquantenzahl um eins kleiner als die Zeilennummer. Die vierte Reihe füllen die drei Orbitale auf, die fünfte Reihe, die vier d-Orbitale und so weiter. Innere Übergangselemente bilden den f-Block und lassen das letzte Elektron in ein f-Orbital eintreten.Die Hauptquantenzahl der f-Orbitale, die sich über jede Zeile füllen, ist um zwei kleiner als die Zeilennummer. In der sechsten Reihe füllen sich die vier f-Orbitale, und in der siebten Reihe, die fünf f-Orbitale. Zu den innere Übergangselementen gehören die Lanthanoide-und die Actinoide.Die Anzahl der Spalten in jedem Block gibt an, wie viele Elektronen in der Unterebene des Blocks gefüllt werden können. Zwei Spalten im s-Block entsprechen einem s-Orbital mit zwei Elektronen, sechs Spalten im p-Block entsprechen drei p-Orbitalen mit sechs Elektronen dar, während zehn Spalten im d-Block den fünf d-Orbitalen mit je zwei Elektronen entsprechen. Da diese sich in den äußeren Hüllen eines Atoms befinden, spielen Valenzelektronen die wichtigste Rolle bei chemischen Reaktionen. Die äußeren Elektronen haben die höchste Energie aller Elektronen in einem Atom und werden leichter abgegeben oder mit anderen Atomen geteilt als die Kernelektronen. Valenzelektronen sind auch der bestimmende Faktor für mehrere physikalische Eigenschaften der Elemente. Die horizontalen Reihen werden als Perioden bezeichnet. Über eine Periode hinweg hat jedes aufeinanderfolgende Element ein zusätzliches Proton im Kern und ein zusätzliches Elektron in der Valenzschale. Die vertikalen Spalten werden Gruppen genannt. Elemente in einer Gruppe (oder Spalte) haben die gleiche Anzahl an Valenzelektronen (Abbildung 1); Die Alkalimetalle Lithium und Natrium haben jeweils nur ein Valenzelektron, die Erdalkalimetalle Beryllium und Magnesium jeweils zwei und die Halogene Fluor und Chlor jeweils sieben Valenzelektronen. Durch den Verlust, die Aufnahme oder das Teilen von Valenzelektronen, wird bestimmt, auf welche Art Elemente reagieren können. Die Ähnlichkeit der chemischen Eigenschaften zwischen Elementen derselben Gruppe ist durch die gleiche Anzahl von Valenzelektronen begründet. Es ist wichtig daran zu erinnern, dass das Periodensystem auf der Grundlage des chemischen Verhaltens der Elemente entwickelt wurde, lange bevor man eine Vorstellung von ihrer Atomstruktur hatte. Mittlerweile ist die Anordnung des Periodensystems in einem viel tieferen Ausmaß verstanden; Elemente, deren Atome die gleiche Anzahl an Valenzelektronen haben, gehören zur gleichen Gruppe. Die farbigen Abschnitte in Abbildung 1 zeigen die drei Kategorien von Elementen, die anhand des Aufbaus der Elektronen in den Orbitalen klassifiziert werden. <img alt="Eq1" src="https://www.jove.com/files/core/CDNSource/lessons/1046/1046Image_1v2.png"> Abbildung 1: Diese Version des Periodensystems zeigt die Konfiguration jedes Elements. Gallium (Ga, Ordnungszahl 31) hat beispielsweise die Elektronenkonfiguration [Ar]4s23d104p1, welche drei Valenzelektronen enthält (unterstrichen). Die vollständig gefüllten d-Orbitale zählen hierbei als Kernelektronen und nicht als Valenzelektronen. Die beiden Spalten ganz links bilden den s-Block und die sechs Spalten ganz rechts bilden den p-Block. Die Edelgase, die Teil des p-Blocks sind, haben alle acht Valenzelektronen, mit Ausnahme der zwei Elektronen im Falle von Helium. Diese Elemente sind äußerst stabil und unreaktiv. Übergangselemente oder Übergangsmetalle: Dabei handelt es sich um metallische Elemente, bei denen das letzte Elektron in ein d-Orbital hinzugefügt wird. Zu den Valenzelektronen (die nach der letzten Edelgaskonfiguration hinzugefügt werden) dieser Elementen gehören die n s und n –1 d-Elektronen. Die offizielle IUPAC-Definition von Übergangselementen spezifiziert sie als Elemente mit teilweise gefüllten d-Orbitalen. Daher sind Elemente mit vollständig gefüllten d-Orbitalen (Zn, Cd, Hg sowie Cu, Ag und Au in Abbildung 1) technisch gesehen keine Übergangselemente. Der Begriff wird jedoch häufig für den gesamten d-Block verwendet (in Abbildung 1 gelb gefärbt). Der D-Block besteht aus 10 Spalten. Die Hauptquantenzahl der d-Orbitale, die jede Reihe füllen, ist gleich der Reihenzahl minus eins. In der vierten Reihe füllen sich 3D-Orbitale, in der fünften Reihe füllen sich 4D-Orbitale und so weiter. Innere Übergangselemente: Sie sind in Abbildung 1 grün dargestellt. Die Valenzschalen der inneren Übergangselemente bestehen aus der n –2 f, der n –1 d und der n s-Unterschale. Innere Übergangselemente bilden den f-Block, wenn das letzte Elektron in ein f-Orbital eintritt. Die Hauptquantenzahl der f-Orbitale, die jede Reihe füllen, ist gleich der Reihenzahl minus zwei. In der sechsten Reihe füllen sich die 4f-Orbitale und in der siebten Reihe füllen sich die 5f-Orbitale. Es gibt zwei innere Übergangsreihen: <ol> <li>Die Lanthanoidenreihe: Lanthan (La) bis Lutetium (Lu)</li> <li>Die Actinoidenreihe: Actinium (Ac) bis Lawrencium (Lr)</li> </ol> Lanthan und Actinium werden aufgrund ihrer Ähnlichkeit mit den anderen Mitgliedern der Reihe miteinbezogen und zur Benennung der Reihe verwendet, obwohl es sich um Übergangsmetalle ohne f-Elektronen handelt. The periodic table organizes elements by increasing atomic number, and it also shows why elements in the same group behave alike. As the electron configurations are placed into the table, a repeating pattern appears in the outer shells of atoms. These outer electrons are called valence electrons, and they play the biggest role in chemical reactions. They are the highest-energy electrons in an atom, so they are easier to lose or share than core electrons. Valence electrons also help determine some physical properties of elements.

The horizontal rows on the periodic table are periods. Moving across a period, each next element has one more proton in the nucleus and one more electron in the valence shell. The vertical columns are groups. Elements in the same group have the same number of valence electrons, which is why they often show similar chemical behavior. For example, lithium and sodium each have one valence electron, beryllium and magnesium each have two, and fluorine and chlorine each have seven. Because elements react by losing, gaining, or sharing valence electrons, their group placement helps predict how they will behave.

It is important to remember that the periodic table was built from chemical behavior before atomic structure was understood. Today, the pattern makes sense because elements with the same number of valence electrons are placed in the same group. The colored regions of the table also show three categories based on which orbitals are being filled. Main group elements, also called representative elements, are the elements whose last added electron enters an s or p orbital in the outermost shell. This category includes all nonmetals, the metalloids, and many metals. For main group elements, the valence electrons are the electrons with the highest n level. Gallium, for example, has the electron configuration [Ar] 4s2 3d10 4p1, so it has three valence electrons. The filled d orbitals are counted as core electrons, not valence electrons.

The two far-left columns form the s-block, and the six far-right columns form the p-block. The noble gases are part of the p-block. They usually have eight valence electrons, except helium, which has two. This helps explain why noble gases are highly stable and unreactive. Transition elements, or transition metals, are metallic elements whose last added electron enters a d orbital. Their valence electrons include the ns and (n - 1)d electrons added after the last noble gas configuration. By the official IUPAC definition, transition elements have partially filled d orbitals, so Zn, Cd, Hg, and also Cu, Ag, and Au are not technically transition elements, even though the term is often used for the whole d-block.

The d-block has 10 columns. As you move across each row, the d orbitals that fill have a principal quantum number that is one less than the row number. In the fourth row, 3d orbitals fill; in the fifth row, 4d orbitals fill; and so on. Inner transition elements form the f-block, where the last electron added enters an f orbital. Their valence shells include the (n - 2)f, the (n - 1)d, and the ns subshells. The f orbitals that fill across each row have a principal quantum number that is two less than the row number. In the sixth row, 4f orbitals fill, and in the seventh row, 5f orbitals fill. The two inner transition series are the lanthanides, from lanthanum through lutetium, and the actinides, from actinium through lawrencium. Lanthanum and actinium are included in those series because they are similar to the other members, even though they are transition metals with no f electrons.
