Koordinationskomplexe weisen unterschiedliche Geometrien wie oktaedrische, tetraedrische und quadratische Planare auf, abhängig von den Metallorbitalen, die an den kovalenten Koordinatenbindungen beteiligt sind.
Die Valenzbindungstheorie (VBT) erklärt dies auf der Grundlage der Hybridisierung des Metalls von s-, p- und d-Orbitalen. Die Hybridisierung liefert leere Orbitale äquivalenter Energien, die sich mit den gefüllten Ligandenorbitalen koordinieren können.
Betrachten Sie einen oktaedrischen Komplex, Hexafluorocobaltat(III). Das Co3+-Ion hat teilweise gefüllte 3d6 Orbitale und leere 4s, 4p und 4d Orbitale. 
Um den Komplex zu bilden, werden die sechs leeren Orbitale des Metalls, 4s, 4p und zwei 4d, mit sechs sp3d2 Orbitalen hybridisiert, die auf die Ecken eines Oktaeders zeigen. Die Hybridorbitale nehmen einsame Paare aus den sechs Fluoridgruppen auf, um den paramagnetischen Komplex zu bilden.
Im Hexammincobalt(III) bewirken die Aminogruppen, dass sich die3d-Elektronen des Kobalts neu anordnen, wodurch zwei leere3d-Orbitale entstehen. 
Diese verbinden sich mit den 4s und 4p Orbitalen zu sechs d2sp3 Hybridorbitalen, die dann koordiniert an die sechs Ammoniakgruppen binden, um den diamagnetischen Komplex zu bilden. 
Betrachten wir nun einen tetraedrischen Komplex – Tetrachlornickelat. Das Ni2+-Ion hat eine 3d8-Konfiguration. Die leeren 4s und 4p Orbitale hybridisieren zu vier sp3 Orbitalen, die zu den Ecken eines Tetraeders zeigen. 
Dabei besetzen vier Elektronenpaare, eines aus jeder Chloridgruppe, die Hybridorbitale, um den paramagnetischen Komplex zu bilden. 
Untersuchen Sie schließlich einen quadratischen planaren Komplex wie Tetrachloroplatinat. Das Pt2+ Ion hat eine d8-Konfiguration.
Die Chloridgruppen zwingen die3-d-Elektronen des Metalls, sich neu anzuordnen, wodurch ein leeres Orbital entsteht. Das leere Orbital kombiniert sich mit den 4s und zwei 4p Orbitalen zu vier dsp2 Hybridorbitalen, die auf die Ecken eines Quadrats gerichtet sind.
Bei der Aufnahme der Elektronenpaare von den Chloridliganden wird der diamagnetische Komplex gebildet. 
Obwohl die Koordinationskomplexe in ihren Farben und ihrem magnetischen Verhalten variieren, erklärt VBT nicht ihre elektronischen Spektren und die Variation ihres magnetischen Verhaltens mit der Temperatur.

Valence Bond Theory

Koordinationsverbindungen und -komplexe weisen je nach Metallatom/-ion und Liganden, aus denen sie bestehen, unterschiedliche Farben, Geometrien und magnetisches Verhalten auf. In einem Versuch, die Bindung und Struktur von Koordinationskomplexen zu erklären, schlug Linus Pauling die Valenzbindungstheorie (VBT) vor, die die Konzepte der Hybridisierung und der Überlappung der Atomorbitale verwendet. Laut VBT hybridisiert das zentrale Metallatom oder -ion (Lewis-Säure), um leere Orbitale mit geeigneter Energie bereitzustellen. Diese Orbitale akzeptieren Elektronenpaare aus gefüllten Ligandenorbitalen (Lewis-Basen), um koordinative kovalente Metall-Ligand-Bindungen zu bilden. In ähnlicher Weise werden für die oktaedrischen Komplexe sechs Hybridorbitale durch Mischen der freien Atomorbitale am zentralen Metallion erzeugt (d2sp3 oder sp3d2-Hybridisierung). Bei linearen Komplexen überlappen sich das eine s- und das eine p-Orbital, was zur Bildung von zwei sp-Hybridorbitalen führt. Innere und äußere Orbitalkomplexe Die Stärke der sich nähernden Liganden beeinflusst die Hybridisierung der Atomorbitale des zentralen Metallions. Betrachten wir das Beispiel eines oktaedrischen Komplexes wie [Co(NH3)6]3+. Das Co3+-Ion enthält sechs Elektronen in den 3d-Orbitalen und hat freie 4s- und 4p-Orbitale. Die ankommenden NH3-Liganden, die starke Feldliganden sind, zwingen die ungepaarten 3d-Elektronen, sich neu anzuordnen und mit den anderen 3d-Elektronen zu paaren. Dadurch entstehen zwei freie 3d-Orbitale, die sich mit einem 4s- und drei 4p-Orbitalen zu sechs äquivalenten d2sp3-Hybridorbitale verbinden. Die sechs Hybridorbitale überlappen sich mit den besetzten Atomorbitalen der Ammoniakliganden und bilden den oktaedrischen Komplex. Da die inneren d (3d)-Orbitale des Metalls an der Hybridisierung beteiligt sind, ist [Co(NH3)6]3+ ein innerer Orbitalkomplex. Aufgrund des Fehlens ungepaarter Elektronen ist der Komplex diamagnetisch oder wird als Low-Spin-Komplex bezeichnet.

In einem anderen oktaedrischen Komplex wie [Co(F)6]3+ ordnen sich die 3d6-Elektronen des Metalls nicht neu an, da der Fluoridligand ein schwacher Feldligand ist. Um freie Orbitale für die Hybridisierung bereitzustellen, verbinden sich zwei der äußersten leeren 4d-Orbitale mit einem 4s- und drei 4p-Orbitalen und bilden sechs freie Hybridorbitale. Da die äußersten d-Orbitale verwendet werden, wird die Hybridisierung als sp3d2-Hybridisierung und der Komplex als äußerer Orbitalkomplex bezeichnet. Das Vorhandensein ungepaarter Elektronen macht den Komplex paramagnetisch, weshalb diese Komplexe auch als Hochspinkomplexe bezeichnet werden.

Coordination complexes form metal-ligand bonds through valence bond theory. In this model, Linus Pauling explained bonding with hybridization and overlap of atomic orbitals. The central metal atom or ion acts as a Lewis acid. It uses empty orbitals of suitable energy to accept electron pairs from ligands, which act as Lewis bases. These coordinate covalent bonds help explain the color, geometry, and magnetic behavior seen in coordination compounds.

The type of hybridization helps determine the shape of the complex. A linear complex uses sp hybridization. A tetrahedral complex uses sp3 hybridization. A square planar complex uses dsp2 hybridization. Octahedral complexes use either d2sp3 or sp3d2 hybridization. In a tetrahedral complex, three vacant p orbitals and one vacant s orbital on the metal mix to make four sp3 hybrid orbitals. These overlap with filled ligand orbitals to form the bond. In a linear complex, one s orbital and one p orbital overlap to form two sp hybrid orbitals. Octahedral complexes form six hybrid orbitals from the vacant orbitals on the metal ion.

Ligand strength can change which orbitals the metal uses. A strong field ligand can force electrons to pair up, while a weak field ligand may not. The octahedral complex [Co(NH3)6]3+ is a good example. The Co3+ ion has six electrons in the 3d orbitals and vacant 4s and 4p orbitals. The NH3 ligands are strong field ligands, so the unpaired 3d electrons rearrange and pair. This creates two vacant 3d orbitals. These join with one 4s orbital and three 4p orbitals to make six d2sp3 hybrid orbitals. The ammonia ligands then overlap with these orbitals to form the octahedral complex.

Because the inner 3d orbitals take part in hybridization, [Co(NH3)6]3+ is an inner orbital complex. It has no unpaired electrons, so it is diamagnetic. It is also called a low spin complex. A similar octahedral complex, [Co(F)6]3+, behaves differently because fluoride is a weak field ligand. In that case, the 3d6 electrons do not rearrange. Two outer 4d orbitals combine with one 4s and three 4p orbitals to form six sp3d2 hybrid orbitals. Since outer d orbitals are used, this is an outer orbital complex. The unpaired electrons make it paramagnetic, so it is a high spin complex. High spin, or outer orbital, complexes are also more labile and less stable than low spin, inner orbital complexes.
