Die Kristallfeldtheorie beschreibt die elektronische Struktur von Übergangsmetallkomplexen, die auf elektrostatischen Wechselwirkungen zwischen Übergangsmetallionen und Ligandenmolekülen basiert. Es wurde verwendet, um bestimmte Eigenschaften von Übergangsmetallkomplexen wie Magnetismus und Farbe zu erklären.
Die elektrostatischen Wechselwirkungen zwischen den Ligandenmolekülen und dem Metallion in einem Übergangsmetallkomplex werden modelliert, indem die Liganden als negative Punktladungen approximiert und das elektrostatische Nettofeld oder Kristallfeld aufgrund dieser Ladungen berechnet wird.
Die elektronische Struktur des Übergangsmetallkomplexes kann dann beschrieben werden, indem die Wirkung des Kristallfeldes auf die Energien der Valenzorbitale des Übergangsmetallions untersucht wird.
Bei der Modellierung des oktaedrischen Komplexes Hexaamminecobalt(III) wird beispielsweise jeder Aminligand durch eine negative Punktladung ersetzt, was zu einem oktaedrischen Kristallfeld führt.
Unter dem Einfluss dieses Feldes sind die Energien der fünf d-Orbitale des Co(III)-Ions nicht mehr dieselben.
Hier haben die Orbitale dx2−y2 und dz2 eine höhere Energie als die Orbitale dxy, dyz und dxz. Dies wird auf die Ausrichtung der d-Orbitale zurückgeführt. Die Lappen der Orbitale dx2−y2 und dz² zeigen direkt auf die Liganden, dementsprechend erfahren die Elektronen in diesen Orbitalen eine stärkere Abstoßung durch die Ligandenladungen. 
Die Orbitale mit höherer Energie haben eine eg-Symmetrie und sind als eg-Orbitalsatz bekannt, während die Orbitale mit niedrigerer Energie eine t2g-Symmetrie aufweisen und den t2g-Orbitalsatz bilden. Die Energiedifferenz zwischen den beiden Sätzen wird als Kristallfeldspaltungsenergie bezeichnet, die durch das Symbol Δoct dargestellt wird.
Die Größe von Δoct hängt von der elektrostatischen Nettowechselwirkung zwischen dem Metallion und den Ligandenmolekülen ab. Einige Liganden, wie z. B. Carbonyl, erzeugen ein starkes Kristallfeld, was zu einem hohen Wert von Δoct führt. Solche Liganden werden als Starkfeldliganden bezeichnet.
Im Gegensatz dazu weisen Liganden wie Iodid kleine Werte von Δoct auf und werden als Schwachfeldliganden bezeichnet. Die Fähigkeit von Liganden, steigende Werte von Δoct zu verursachen, ist in der spektrochemischen Reihe aufgeführt.
Eine Erhöhung der Ladung am Metallion erhöht auch die elektrostatische Nettowechselwirkung innerhalb des Komplexes, was zu einem höheren Wert von Δoct führt.

<h3>Kristallfeldtheorie</h3> Um das beobachtete Verhalten von Übergangsmetallkomplexen (z. B. Farben) zu erklären, wurde ein Modell entwickelt, das elektrostatische Wechselwirkungen zwischen den Elektronen der Liganden und den Elektronen in den nichthybridisierten d-Orbitalen des zentralen Metallatoms beinhaltet. Dieses elektrostatische Modell ist die Kristallfeldtheorie (CFT). Es hilft, die Farben, das magnetische Verhalten und einige Strukturen von Koordinationsverbindungen von Übergangsmetallen zu verstehen, zu interpretieren und vorherzusagen. CFT konzentriert sich auf die nichtbindenden Elektronen am zentralen Metallion in Koordinationskomplexen, nicht auf die Metall-Ligand-Bindungen. Wie die Valenzbindungstheorie erzählt die CFT nur einen Teil der Geschichte des Verhaltens von Komplexen. In seiner reinen Form ignoriert CFT jegliche kovalente Bindung zwischen Liganden und Metallionen. Sowohl der Ligand als auch das Metall werden als unendlich kleine Punktladungen behandelt. 

 Alle Elektronen sind negativ, daher stoßen die von den Liganden abgegebenen Elektronen die Elektronen des Zentralmetalls ab. Betrachten Sie das Verhalten der Elektronen in den unhybridisierten d-Orbitalen in einem oktaedrischen Komplex. Die fünf d-Orbitale bestehen aus lappenförmigen Bereichen und sind im Raum angeordnet, wie in Figure 1 dargestellt. In einem oktaedrischen Komplex koordinieren die sechs Liganden entlang der Achsen.

 In einem unkomplexierten Metallion in der Gasphase verteilen sich die Elektronen gemäß der Hundschen Regel auf die fünf d-Orbitale, da alle Orbitale die gleiche Energie haben. In Übergangsmetallkomplexen werden die Energien der d-Orbitale von Übergangsmetallatomen durch die Art der Liganden und die Molekülgeometrie beeinflusst. Sind die Ligandenmoleküle gleichmäßig um das Metallion angeordnet, entsteht ein kugelförmiges Kristallfeld. Dieses kugelförmige Kristallfeld erhöht die Energien der d-Orbitale des Metallions um den gleichen Betrag (Figure 2). Wenn die Liganden in einer oktaedrischen Geometrie an ein Metallion koordinieren, sind die Energien der d-Orbitale nicht mehr gleich.

 In oktaedrischen Komplexen zeigen die Lappen in zwei der fünf d-Orbitale, den dx2−y2- und dz2 Orbitalen, in Richtung der Liganden (Figure 1). Diese beiden Orbitale werden als zB-Orbitale bezeichnet (das Symbol bezieht sich auf die Symmetrie der Orbitale). Die anderen drei Orbitale, die dxy, dxz und dyz Orbitale, haben Lappen, die zwischen den Liganden zeigen und als t2g Orbitale bezeichnet werden (das Symbol bezieht sich wiederum auf die Symmetrie der Orbitale). Wenn sich sechs Liganden entlang der Achsen des Oktaeders dem Metallion nähern, stoßen ihre Punktladungen die Elektronen in den d-Orbitalen des Metallions ab. Allerdings sind die Abstoßungen zwischen den Elektronen in den eg-Orbitalen (den dx2-y2 Orbitalen) und den Liganden größer als die Abstoßungen zwischen den Elektronen in den t2g Orbitalen (den dxy, dxz und dyz Orbitalen) und den Liganden. Dies liegt daran, dass die Lappen der eg-Orbitale direkt auf die Liganden zeigen, während die Lappen der t2g Orbitale zwischen ihnen zeigen. Somit haben Elektronen in den zB-Orbitalen des Metallions in einem oktaedrischen Komplex höhere potentielle Energien als die Elektronen in den t2g Orbitalen. Der Energieunterschied kann wie in Figure 2 dargestellt werden. 

 Der Energieunterschied zwischen dem eg und dem t2g Orbital wird Kristallfeldaufspaltung genannt und durch Δoct symbolisiert, wobei oct für Oktaeder steht. Die Größe von Δoct hängt von vielen Faktoren ab, einschließlich der Art der sechs Liganden, die sich um das zentrale Metallion befinden, der Ladung des Metalls und davon, ob das Metall 3d, 4d oder 5d Orbitale verwendet. Verschiedene Liganden erzeugen unterschiedliche Kristallfeldaufspaltungen. Crystal field theory explains how ligands affect the d orbitals in transition metal complexes. This electrostatic model helps predict the colors, magnetic behavior, and some structures of coordination compounds. It focuses on the nonbonding electrons on the central metal ion, not on the metal-ligand bonds.

In crystal field theory, the metal ion and ligands are treated as very small point charges. Because electrons are negative, electrons donated by the ligands repel the electrons in the metal’s unhybridized d orbitals. In its pure form, this model ignores covalent bonding between ligands and metal ions, so it gives only part of the full picture.

The five d orbitals have different shapes and directions in space. In an octahedral complex, six ligands approach the metal ion along the axes. In a free metal ion in the gas phase, the d orbitals have the same energy, so electrons fill them according to Hund’s rule.

When ligands are arranged evenly around a metal ion, they create a spherical crystal field. This field raises the energy of all the d orbitals by the same amount. The picture changes in an octahedral geometry, where the d orbitals no longer all stay at the same energy.

In an octahedral complex, the d x2-y2 and d z2 orbitals point directly toward the ligands. These are called the e g orbitals. The d xy, d xz, and d yz orbitals point between the ligands, and these are called the t 2g orbitals. Because the e g orbitals face the ligands more directly, they feel stronger repulsion and have higher energy than the t 2g orbitals.

The energy gap between the e g and t 2g orbitals is called crystal field splitting and is written as Δ oct. The size of Δ oct depends on the ligands around the metal ion, the charge on the metal, and whether the metal uses 3 d, 4 d, or 5 d orbitals. Different ligands produce different splitting values, which are organized in the spectrochemical series.
