Übergangsmetallkomplexe weisen eine Vielzahl unterschiedlicher Farben auf, die auf die Absorption bestimmter Wellenlängen des sichtbaren Lichts durch diese Verbindungen zurückzuführen sind.
Licht wird absorbiert, wenn es die benötigte Energie hat, um ein Elektron von einem niedrigeren Energieniveau auf ein höheres anzuregen. Folglich absorbieren Übergangsmetallkomplexe im Allgemeinen Licht, das der Kristallfeldspaltungsenergie oder dem Delta des Komplexes entspricht, die typischerweise im Bereich des sichtbaren Lichts liegt.
Zum Beispiel absorbiert Hexafluorogobaltat(III) rotes Licht stark, absorbiert aber nur minimal grünes Licht, was dazu führt, dass es grün erscheint.
Hexaammincobalt(III), das ein höheres Delta aufweist, absorbiert hochenergetisches blaues Licht stark, aber nur minimal gelbes Licht. Dementsprechend erscheint Hexaammincobalt(III) gelb.
Die Wirkung des kleineren Deltas von Hexafluorcoobaltat(III) beschränkt sich nicht nur auf seine Farbe. Wenn das Delta niedrig genug ist, wie bei Hexafluorokobaltat(III), besetzen Elektronen einzeln die Orbitale mit höherer Energie, bevor sie sich in den Orbitalen mit niedrigerer Energie paaren.
Hier ist das Delta kleiner als die Spinpaarungsenergie – die Energie der elektrostatischen Abstoßung zwischen Elektronen im selben Orbital. Daher ist es für Elektronen energetisch machbarer, Delta zu überwinden und hochenergetische Orbitale zu besetzen, als die Spinpaarungsenergie zu überwinden, um in den niederenergetischen Orbitalen zu paaren.
Im Gegensatz dazu ist in Hexaammincobalt(III) das Delta größer als die Spinpaarungsenergie. Dementsprechend paaren sich Elektronen in den Orbitalen mit niedrigerer Energie, so dass die Orbitale mit höherer Energie frei bleiben, wie es die Hundsche Regel erwartet.
Als Folge dieses Unterschieds in der elektronischen Verteilung hat das Co(III)-Ion vier ungepaarte Elektronen in Hexafluorcobalt(III), während es in Hexaammincobalt(III) keine ungepaarten Elektronen hat. Dementsprechend wird ersterer als High-Spin-Komplex und letzterer als Low-Spin-Komplex bezeichnet.
Im Allgemeinen führen Schwachfeldliganden, die mit kleinen Delta-Werten assoziiert sind, zu High-Spin-Komplexen, während Starkfeld-Liganden, die hohe Delta-Werte fördern, Low-Spin-Komplexe bilden.
High-Spin- und Low-Spin-Komplexe können sehr unterschiedliche magnetische Eigenschaften aufweisen. So wird beispielsweise das hochspinnige Hexafluorokobaltat(III) aufgrund seiner ungepaarten Elektronen von einem Magneten angezogen und als paramagnetisch bezeichnet.
Währenddessen wird das Low-Spin-Hexaammincobalt(III) von einem Magneten abgestoßen und als diamagnetisch bezeichnet.

Farbe in Koordinationskomplexen Wenn Atome oder Moleküle Licht mit der richtigen Frequenz absorbieren, werden ihre Elektronen zu Orbitalen höherer Energie angeregt. Bei vielen Hauptgruppenatomen und -molekülen liegen die absorbierten Photonen im ultravioletten Bereich des elektromagnetischen Spektrums, der vom menschlichen Auge nicht wahrgenommen werden kann. Bei Koordinationsverbindungen ermöglicht der Energieunterschied zwischen den d-Orbitalen häufig die Absorption und Emission von Photonen im sichtbaren Bereich, die vom menschlichen Auge als Farben wahrgenommen werden. <img alt="Image1" src="/files/ftp_upload/11463/11463_Image_1.png" style="text-align: center; height: 300px;"> Figure 1. Kleine Änderungen in den relativen Energien der Orbitale, zwischen denen Elektronen wechseln, können zu drastischen Verschiebungen in der Farbe des absorbierten Lichts führen. Daher hängen die Farben der Koordinationsverbindungen von vielen Faktoren ab, wie zum Beispiel:

 <li>Verschiedene wässrige Metallionen können unterschiedliche Farben haben.</li>
 <li>Unterschiedliche Oxidationsstufen eines Metalls können unterschiedliche Farben erzeugen.</li>
 <li>Spezifische, an das Metallzentrum koordinierte Liganden beeinflussen die Farbe von Koordinationskomplexen. Beispielsweise erscheint der Eisen(II)-Komplex [Fe(H2O)6]SO4 blaugrün, weil der High-Spin-Komplex Photonen im roten Wellenlängenbereich absorbiert. Im Gegensatz dazu erscheint der Low-Spin-Eisen(II)-Komplex K4[Fe(CN)6] blassgelb, weil er violette Photonen höherer Energie absorbiert.</li>
</ul> 
Im Allgemeinen bewirken Starkfeldliganden eine große Aufteilung der Energien der d-Orbitale des zentralen Metallatoms (großes Δ). Übergangsmetall-Koordinationsverbindungen mit diesen Liganden sind gelb, orange oder rot, weil sie violettes oder blaues Licht höherer Energie absorbieren. Andererseits sind Koordinationsverbindungen von Übergangsmetallen mit Schwachfeldliganden oft blaugrün, blau oder indigoblau, weil sie gelbes, orangefarbenes oder rotes Licht niedrigerer Energie absorbieren. Die Stärke der Liganden zur Spaltung der d-Orbitale ist in der spektrochemischen Reihe aufgeführt. Um ein Elektron auf ein höheres Niveau, beispielsweise das 4p-Orbital, anzuregen, sind Photonen sehr hoher Energie erforderlich. Diese Energie entspricht sehr kurzen Wellenlängen im ultravioletten Bereich des Spektrums. Da kein sichtbares Licht absorbiert wird, sieht das Auge keine Veränderung und die Verbindung erscheint weiß oder farblos. Eine Lösung, die beispielsweise [Cu(CN)2]− enthält, ist farblos. Andererseits weisen oktaedrische Cu2+-Komplexe eine Lücke in den zB-Orbitalen auf, und Elektronen können bis zu diesem Niveau angeregt werden. Die Wellenlänge (Energie) des absorbierten Lichts entspricht dem sichtbaren Teil des Spektrums, und Cu2+-Komplexe sind fast immer gefärbt – blau, blaugrün-violett oder gelb. Magnetismus in Koordinationskomplexen Experimentelle Beweise magnetischer Messungen stützen die Theorie von High- und Low-Spin-Komplexen. Moleküle wie O2, die ungepaarte Elektronen enthalten, sind paramagnetisch. Paramagnetische Substanzen werden von Magnetfeldern angezogen. Viele Übergangsmetallkomplexe haben ungepaarte Elektronen und sind daher paramagnetisch. Moleküle wie N2 und Ionen wie Na+ und [Fe(CN)6]4−, die keine ungepaarten Elektronen enthalten, sind diamagnetisch. Wenn ein Elektron in einem Atom oder Ion ungepaart ist, macht das magnetische Moment aufgrund seines Spins das gesamte Atom oder Ion paramagnetisch. Die Größe des magnetischen Moments eines Systems mit ungepaarten Elektronen hängt direkt von der Anzahl dieser Elektronen ab: Je größer die Anzahl der ungepaarten Elektronen, desto größer das magnetische Moment. Daher wird das beobachtete magnetische Moment verwendet, um die Anzahl der vorhandenen ungepaarten Elektronen zu bestimmen. Das gemessene magnetische Moment von Low-Spin d6 [Fe(CN)6]4− bestätigt, dass Eisen diamagnetisch ist, während High-Spin d6 [Fe(H2O)6]2+ vier ungepaarte Elektronen mit einem magnetischen Moment aufweist, das diese Anordnung bestätigt (Figure 2). Color in coordination complexes comes from how metal electrons absorb light. When atoms or molecules absorb light at the right frequency, electrons move to higher-energy orbitals. For many main-group atoms and molecules, the absorbed light is ultraviolet and cannot be seen. In coordination compounds, the energy gap between d orbitals often matches visible light, so the compound can absorb and emit colors that the human eye detects.

Small changes in orbital energy can cause large shifts in the color that is absorbed. That is why coordination compounds can change color depending on the metal ion in water, the oxidation state of the metal, and the ligands attached to the metal center. Ligands are molecules or ions that bind to the metal. The iron(II) complex [Fe(H2O)6]SO4 is blue-green because the high-spin complex absorbs red light. The low-spin iron(II) complex K4[Fe(CN)6] is pale yellow because it absorbs higher-energy violet light.

Ligand strength also affects color through crystal field splitting, the size of the energy gap between d orbitals. Strong-field ligands create a large split, and these transition metal complexes often look yellow, orange, or red because they absorb violet or blue light. Weak-field ligands create a smaller split, and these complexes often look blue-green, blue, or indigo because they absorb yellow, orange, or red light. The spectrochemical series lists ligands in order of increasing crystal field splitting energy.

Some coordination compounds do not absorb visible light at all. A Cu+ complex has a d10 electron configuration, and the eg orbitals are filled. To move an electron to a higher level such as a 4p orbital, the compound would need very high-energy ultraviolet light. Since no visible light is absorbed, the compound appears white or colorless. A solution of [Cu(CN)2]- is one example. In contrast, octahedral Cu2+ complexes have a vacancy in the eg orbitals, so electrons can be excited there. These complexes are usually colored, often blue, blue-green, violet, or yellow.

Magnetism gives another way to study coordination complexes. Molecules such as O2 with unpaired electrons are paramagnetic, which means they are attracted to magnetic fields. Many transition metal complexes are also paramagnetic because they contain unpaired electrons. Molecules such as N2 and ions such as Na+ and [Fe(CN)6]4- have no unpaired electrons, so they are diamagnetic and show a slight repulsion by magnetic fields.

Magnetic measurements can support the idea of high-spin and low-spin complexes. This comparison is useful for d4, d5, d6, and d7 octahedral systems, but not for d1, d2, d3, d5, d8, d9, and d10 systems. When an electron is unpaired, its spin creates a magnetic moment, and the size of that moment depends on how many unpaired electrons are present. The measured magnetic moment can therefore help determine electron pairing. For example, low-spin d6 [Fe(CN)6]4- is diamagnetic, while high-spin d6 [Fe(H2O)6]2+ has four unpaired electrons and a magnetic moment that matches that arrangement.
