In Eliminierungsreaktionen fungieren Nukleophile als Lewis-Basen, indem sie ein Elektronenpaar an ein Proton abgeben. Zu den gebräuchlichen Basen, die zur Förderung von Eliminationsreaktionen verwendet werden, gehören Hydroxide wie Natriumhydroxid, Alkoxide wie Kalium-tert-Butoxid oder Alkohole wie Ethanol.
Eliminierungsreaktionen beinhalten typischerweise den Verlust kleiner molekularer Fragmente von einem Substrat, um mindestens eine π Bindung zu bilden. Bei Alkylhalogeniden verläuft die Eliminationsreaktion mit dem Verlust eines Wasserstoffatoms und eines Halogenatoms, daher der Name Dehydrohalogenierung.
Da der an die Abgangsgruppe gebundene Kohlenstoff ein α Kohlenstoff ist und der Wasserstoff auf dem benachbarten Kohlenstoff ein β Wasserstoff ist, werden diese Reaktionen oft als β-Eliminations- oder 1,2-Eliminationsreaktionen bezeichnet.
Die meisten Eliminationsreaktionen erfolgen über einen E2- oder E1-Mechanismus.
Für E2-Reaktionen werden starke Basen wie Natriumethoxid verwendet. Der konzertierte Mechanismus wird durch die Deprotonierung des β Kohlenstoffs eingeleitet, gefolgt von der Abreise der Halogenid-Austrittsgruppe, was zur Bildung einer π Bindung zwischen den Positionen α und β führt.
Im Gegensatz dazu verläuft die E1-Reaktion in zwei Schritten. Die erste beinhaltet das Verlassen der Abgangsgruppe, um ein Carbokationszwischenprodukt zu bilden, gefolgt von der Deprotonierung der Carbokation durch die Base, um eine π Bindung zu bilden.
Bei Alkylhalogeniden, die zwei verschiedene β Kohlenstoffe enthalten, können Eliminationsreaktionen mehr als ein Alken erzeugen. Dabei ist das stärker substituierte Alken am stabilsten und wird als Zaitsev-Produkt bezeichnet, während das weniger substituierte Alken als Hofmann-Produkt bezeichnet wird. Daher werden Eliminationsreaktionen als regioselektiv bezeichnet.
Darüber hinaus begünstigen Eliminationsreaktionen die Bildung von trans-Alkenen gegenüber den cis-Isomeren, wodurch sie stereoselektiv sind.

Elimination Reactions

Ein Nukleophil kann mit einem Alkylhalogenid reagieren, um durch Verdrängung des Halogens das Substitutionsprodukt zu ergeben. Oder es kann als Base fungieren und durch Deprotonierung des benachbarten Kohlensubstanzs das Eliminierungsprodukt unter Bildung eines Alkens ergeben. Bei einer Eliminierungsreaktion verliert das Substrat zwei Gruppen benachbarter Kohlensubstanzatome unter Bildung mindestens einer π-Bindung. Der an das Halogen gebundene Kohlensubstanz wird als α-Kohlensubstanz bezeichnet, während der benachbarte Kohlensubstanz als β-Kohlensubstanz bezeichnet wird. daher werden diese Reaktionen als β-Eliminierung oder 1,2-Eliminierung bezeichnet.

Das Nukleophil fungiert als Lewis-Base, indem es ein Elektronenpaar an ein Proton abgibt. Zu den üblichen Basen, die zur Förderung von Eliminierungsreaktionen verwendet werden, gehören Hydroxide (OH^−), Alkoxide (OR^−) und Amide (NH2−). In Gegenwart einer starken Base verliert das Alkylhalogenid ein Proton vom β-Kohlensubstanz und das Halogen vom α-Kohlensubstanz, wodurch die Bildung einer π-Bindung zwischen den beiden Kohlensubstanzatomen ermöglicht wird.

Mechanismus der Eliminierungsreaktionen

Eliminierungsreaktionen erfolgen üblicherweise über den E2- oder E1-Mechanismus. Der E2-Mechanismus läuft in einem einzigen konzertierten Schritt ab: Die Abstraktion des β-Wassersubstanzen durch die Base geht mit der Spaltung der α-Kohlenstoff-Halogen-Bindung einher. Somit verläuft die E2-Reaktion über einen Übergangszustand.

Die E1-Reaktion erfolgt in zwei Schritten. Zunächst wird das Alkylhalogenid ionisiert und bildet ein Carbokation-Zwischenprodukt und ein Halogenidion. Anschließend führt die Deprotonierung des Carbokations durch die Base zu einer π-Bindung. Somit wird bei E1-Reaktionen das Carbokation-Zwischenprodukt über einen Übergangszustand gebildet, und für den Deprotonierungsschritt existiert ein zweiter Übergangszustand.

Regio- und Stereoselektivität

Wenn das Alkylhalogenid zwei verschiedene β-Kohlensubstanzen aufweist, kann die Eliminierungsreaktion mehr als ein Alken erzeugen. In solchen Fällen wird im Allgemeinen das stärker substituierte (und stabilste) Alken beobachtet, das als Zaitsev-Produkt bekannt ist. In einigen Fällen wird jedoch das weniger substituierte Alken (Hofmann-Produkt) erhalten. Die Wahl der Base spielt eine wichtige Rolle bei der Entscheidung, welches regioselektive Produkt gebildet wird. Eliminierungsreaktionen begünstigen auch die Bildung von trans-Alkenen gegenüber den cis-Isomeren, was sie stereoselektiv macht.

Elimination reactions of alkyl halides form alkenes by removing groups from adjacent carbons. A base can act on the substrate instead of causing substitution. It deprotonates the neighboring carbon, and the reaction creates at least one pi bond. The carbon bonded to the halogen is the alpha carbon, and the adjacent carbon is the beta carbon. These are also called beta elimination or 1,2-elimination reactions.

Strong bases help drive this process. Common examples include hydroxides, alkoxides, and amides. The base donates an electron pair to a proton, so it behaves as a Lewis base. In the presence of a strong base, the alkyl halide loses a proton from the beta carbon and the halogen from the alpha carbon. This lets a pi bond form between the two carbon atoms.

Elimination reactions often follow either the E2 or E1 mechanism. The E2 pathway is a single concerted step. The base removes the beta hydrogen at the same time that the alpha carbon-halogen bond breaks. This means E2 has one transition state.

The E1 pathway happens in two steps. First, the alkyl halide ionizes to form a carbocation intermediate and a halide ion. Then the base removes a proton from the carbocation, which forms the pi bond. In E1 reactions, the first step has one transition state, and the deprotonation step has a second transition state.

When an alkyl halide has two different beta carbons, more than one alkene can form. The more substituted and usually more stable alkene is called the Zaitsev product. In some cases, the less substituted Hofmann product forms instead, and the base helps decide which product is favored. Elimination reactions also tend to give trans-alkenes over cis isomers, so they are stereoselective.
