Diene sind organische Verbindungen, die zwei Kohlenstoff-Kohlenstoff-Doppelbindungen enthalten. Sie werden als kumuliert, konjugiert oder isoliert klassifiziert.
Kumulierte Diene haben zwei benachbarte Doppelbindungen. Im Vergleich dazu sind die Doppelbindungen in konjugierten Dienen durch eine Einfachbindung und in isolierten Dienen durch zwei oder mehr Einfachbindungen getrennt.
Jedes Kohlenstoffatom in konjugierten Dienen ist sp2-hybridisiert mit einem unhybridisierten p-Orbital, das senkrecht zur Ebene des Moleküls steht.
Die benachbarten p-Orbitale überlappen sich und bilden ein kontinuierliches π System, in dem die π Elektronen über das gesamte Molekül delokalisiert sind.
Diese Elektronendelokalisierung verleiht der Kohlenstoff-Kohlenstoff-Einfachbindung einen partiellen Doppelbindungscharakter, wodurch sie kürzer ist als eine reguläre Kohlenstoff-Kohlenstoff-Einfachbindung.
Darüber hinaus haben die Kohlenstoffe in konjugierten Systemen, die sp2-hybridisiert sind, einen höheren s-Charakter als sp3-hybridisierte Kohlenstoffe. Da die Elektronen in einem sp2-Orbital näher am Kern liegen, führt die Überlappung zwischen zwei solchen Orbitalen zu kürzeren Bindungen.

Einführung

Konjugierte Diene sind Verbindungen, die durch das Vorhandensein abwechselnder Doppel- und Einfachbindungen gekennzeichnet sind. In einem konjugierten System wie 1,3-Butadien überlappt das unhybridisierte 2p-Orbital an jedem Kohlenstoff kontinuierlich, wodurch die π-Elektronen über das gesamte Molekül delokalisiert werden können. Im Gegensatz dazu tritt diese Art der Überlappung bei kumulierten und isolierten Dienen wie 2,3-Pentadien bzw. 1,4-Pentadien nicht auf. Stattdessen bleiben die π-Elektronen zwischen den Doppelbindungen lokalisiert.

Conjugated dienes are compounds with alternating double and single bonds. In a conjugated system such as 1,3-butadiene, the unhybridized 2 p orbital on each carbon overlaps continuously. This lets the pi electrons spread out, or delocalize, across the whole molecule.

Cumulated and isolated dienes do not show this same overlap. In 2,3-pentadiene, a cumulated diene, and 1,4-pentadiene, an isolated diene, the pi electrons stay localized between the double bonds. The difference in overlap helps distinguish these three diene types.

Conjugated dienes can also be made in two common ways. Allylic halides undergo dehydrohalogenation with potassium tert-butoxide to form conjugated dienes. Diols can also lose water twice in the presence of aluminum oxide, which produces conjugated dienes.

Substituted conjugated dienes can show configurational isomerism. Their double bonds may each have an E or Z configuration. For example, 1-chloro-2,4-heptadiene has four configurational isomers.
