Es sei daran erinnert, dass 1,3-Butadien ein konjugiertes System mit vier Kohlenstoffatomen ist. Im Vergleich dazu handelt es sich bei dem Allylkation und dem Anion um konjugierte Systeme mit drei Kohlenstoffatomen.
Eine lineare Kombination der drei unhybridisierten atomaren p-Orbitale in allylischen Systemen ergibt drei π Molekülorbitale.
Das Molekülorbital mit der niedrigsten Energie, ψ1, wird durch eine phasengleiche Überlappung aller p-Orbitale gebildet und ist vollständig bindend.
ψ2 hat einen Knoten, der durch den zentralen Kohlenstoff verläuft. Da es keine Überlappung zwischen benachbarten Kohlenstoffen gibt, handelt es sich um ein nichtbindendes Orbital, das energetisch den Atomorbitalen ähnlich ist.
ψ3 ist vollständig antibindend mit drei phasenverschobenen p-Orbitalen, die zwei Knoten bilden.
Die beiden π Elektronen des Allylkations füllen ψ1 auf, das zum HOMO wird, wodurch ψ2 zum LUMO wird.

Eine Allylgruppe ist ein konjugiertes Dreikohlensubstanzsystem, bei dem der sp³-hybridisierte Allylkohlensubstanz über eine Einfachbindung an eine CH=CH_2-Gruppe gebunden ist. Allylanionen können durch Behandlung von Propen mit einer starken Base, die Methylgruppen deprotonieren kann, erhalten werden. The allyl cation and allyl anion both have the same three-carbon orbital pattern. An allyl group is a conjugated system, which means its electrons are spread across connected p orbitals. In the allyl anion, propene is treated with a strong base that removes a methyl hydrogen. In the allyl cation, the species forms as an intermediate in substitution reactions that involve allylic halides.

In both cases, the allylic carbon changes from sp3 to sp2 hybridization. That change leaves three sp2-hybridized carbons in a row, each with one unhybridized p orbital. These three atomic p orbitals combine to form three molecular orbitals: phi 1, phi 2, and phi 3.

Phi 1 is the bonding molecular orbital. Phi 2 is nonbonding and has a node through the central carbon. Phi 3 is antibonding and has two nodes. The allyl cation and allyl anion share this same molecular orbital framework. They differ only in the number of pi electrons. The allyl cation has two pi electrons in phi 1. The allyl anion has four pi electrons, which fill phi 1 and phi 2.
