Sigmatrope Umlagerungen beinhalten die Migration einer σ Bindung von einem Ort zu einem anderen innerhalb eines π Systems.

Sigmatrope Umlagerungen sind eine Klasse perizyklischer Reaktionen, bei denen eine σ-Bindung von einem Teil eines π-Systems zu einem anderen wandert. Hierbei handelt es sich um intramolekulare Umlagerungen, bei denen die Gesamtzahl der σ- und π-Bindungen unverändert bleibt.

Sigmatrope Verschiebungen werden anhand eines Ordnungsterms [i, j ] klassifiziert, wobei i und j die Anzahl der Atome angeben, über die jedes Ende der σ-Bindung wandert. Nachfolgend sind Beispiele für eine sigmatrope [3,3]-Verschiebung in 1,5-Hexadien, die als Cope-Umlagerung bezeichnet wird, und eine [1,7]-Hydrid-Verschiebung in 1,3,5-Heptatrien dargestellt.

Thermisch induzierte sigmatrope Verschiebungen verlaufen suprafazial, wenn die Summe der an der Umlagerung beteiligten π- und σ-Elektronenpaare ungerade ist. Thermal sigmatropic shifts are intramolecular pericyclic reactions. In these reactions, a sigma bond moves from one part of a pi system to another. The total number of sigma and pi bonds stays the same.

These shifts are named with an order term written as [i,j]. The numbers i and j show how many atoms each end of the sigma bond travels across. A [3,3] shift in 1,5-hexadiene is called the Cope rearrangement, and a [1,7] hydride shift appears in 1,3,5-heptatriene.

Heat can drive sigmatropic shifts along different symmetry-allowed paths. A suprafacial pathway is allowed when the total number of pi and sigma electron pairs is odd. The [3,3] shift in 1,5-hexadiene has three electron pairs, so it follows a suprafacial path.

An antarafacial pathway is symmetry-allowed when the total number of electron pairs is even. The [1,7] hydride shift in 1,3,5-heptatriene has four electron pairs, so it fits the antarafacial case. These examples show how bond migration and electron count help classify thermal sigmatropic reactions.
