Aromatische Verbindungen sind Kohlenwasserstoffe mit konjugierten π Bindungen, die in einem Ring eingeschlossen sind. Benzol und seine Derivate sind die bekanntesten Beispiele für aromatische Verbindungen.
Ursprünglich wurden Benzolderivate aus natürlichen Ölen isoliert, die von Pflanzen und Bäumen produziert wurden, und wurden aufgrund ihres charakteristischen Geruchs als "aromatisch" bezeichnet.
Zum Beispiel haben Benzaldehyd aus Mandeln und Kirschen, Toluol aus Tolubalsam und Eugenol aus Nelken unterschiedliche Gerüche.
Im Laufe der Zeit hat sich der Begriff aromatisch immer wieder für alle Benzolderivate verwendet, unabhängig davon, ob sie duftend sind oder nicht. Das Schmerzmittel Aspirin enthält zum Beispiel Acetylsalicylsäure, eine geruchlose aromatische Verbindung.
Strukturell sind aromatische Verbindungen hochungesättigte Kohlenwasserstoffe und weisen ein anderes chemisches Verhalten auf als Alkene, Alkine und offenkettige Polyene.
Die Hauptquellen für einfache aromatische Verbindungen sind Steinkohlenteer und Erdöl.
Bei der fraktionierten Destillation von Steinkohlenteer entstehen viele aromatische Verbindungen wie Benzol, Toluol, Xylol, Naphthalin und andere.
In ähnlicher Weise werden bei der Erdölraffination Alkane in aromatische Verbindungen umgewandelt.

Im Allgemeinen bezeichnet der Begriff „aromatisch“ einen angenehmen Geruch oder Duft von frischen Blumen, frisch zubereitetem Kaffee usw. In der frühen Geschichte der organischen Chemie wurden viele Benzolderivate aus den angenehm duftenden Ölen der Pflanzen isoliert. Beispielsweise wurde Vanillin aus dem Öl der Vanille, Methylsalicylat aus dem Öl des Wintergrüns und Zimtaldehyd aus dem Öl des Zimts isoliert. Sie hatten alle einen angenehmen Geruch; daher wurde ihnen der Name aromatisch gegeben.

Im Jahr 1825 isolierte Faraday Benzol aus komprimiertem Leuchtgas (dem in Gaslampen verbrannten Brennsubstanz) und nannte es „Bicarburet of Hydrogen“. Er führte auch eine Elementaranalyse der Verbindung durch und beobachtete ein Verhältnis von Wassersubstanz zu Kohlensubstanz von 1:1.

Später synthetisierte Eilhardt Mitscherlich im Jahr 1834 Benzol aus Benzoesäure (isoliert aus Benzoeharz) und Calciumoxid. Durch die Durchführung von Dampfdichtemessungen zeigte er, dass die Summenformel von Benzol C_6H_6 ist. Da die neue Verbindung aus Benzoeharz gewonnen wurde, nannte er sie Benzin, heute bekannt als Benzol. Es wird als Laborlösungsmittel verwendet.

Der Begriff „aromatisch“ wird immer noch zur Beschreibung aller Benzolderivate verwendet, ob duftend oder nicht. Viele der natürlichen und pharmazeutischen Verbindungen sind aromatisch. Estron ist beispielsweise ein Steroid, Atorvastatin (Lipitor) ein Cholesterinsenker, Zoloft ein Antidepressivum und Serevent, das zur Behandlung von Asthma eingesetzt wird, sind aromatische Verbindungen.

Aromatische Verbindungen werden hauptsächlich aus Kohle und Erdöl gewonnen. Kohle erzeugt beim Erhitzen auf 1000 °C unter Luftabschluss Kohlenteer. Kohlenteer erzeugt bei fraktionierter Destillation viele aromatische Kohlenwassersubstanze wie Benzol, Toluol, Dimethylbenzol (Xylol), Naphthalin, Biphenyl, Inden, Anthracen usw.

Aromatische Verbindungen können jedoch nicht direkt aus Erdöl gewonnen werden. Bei der Erdölraffination werden die Alkane in Gegenwart eines Katalysators bei 500 °C und hohem Druck in aromatische Verbindungen umgewandelt.

Aromatic compounds are linked to both pleasant smells and important chemical structures. The word aromatic first came from fragrant natural sources such as fresh flowers and spices. Early organic chemists isolated benzene derivatives from oils of plants, including vanillin from vanilla, methyl salicylate from wintergreen, and cinnamaldehyde from cinnamon.

The history of benzene also helped shape the idea of aromatic compounds. In 1825, Faraday isolated benzene from compressed illuminating gas, which was used in gaslights. He called it bicarburet of hydrogen and found a 1:1 ratio of hydrogen to carbon. In 1834, Eilhardt Mitscherlich made benzene from benzoic acid, which comes from gum benzoin, and calcium oxide. He used vapor density measurements to show that benzene has the formula C6H6, and he named it Benzin, now called benzene.

Today, the term aromatic includes many benzene derivatives, even when they do not smell pleasant. Benzene itself is used as a laboratory solvent. Many natural and pharmaceutical compounds are aromatic, including estrone, atorvastatin (Lipitor), Zoloft, and Serevent.

Aromatic compounds are mainly obtained from coal and petroleum. When coal is heated to 1000 °C without air, it forms coal tar. Fractional distillation of coal tar gives aromatic hydrocarbons such as benzene, toluene, xylene, naphthalene, biphenyl, indene, and anthracene. Aromatic compounds are not taken directly from petroleum, but petroleum refining can convert alkanes into aromatic compounds with a catalyst at 500 °C under high pressure.
