Zyklische aromatische Verbindungen, die ein oder mehrere Heteroatome haben, werden als heterozyklische aromatische Verbindungen bezeichnet.
Zu den fünfgliedrigen heterocyclischen aromatischen Verbindungen gehören Pyrrol, Furan, Thiophen und Imidazol, die Stickstoff, Sauerstoff und Schwefel als Heteroatome enthalten.
In diesen planaren Verbindungen sind alle Atome sp2-hybridisiert, einschließlich des Heteroatoms.
Wie aus der π Bindungsstruktur von Pyrrol ersichtlich ist, besetzen ein π Elektron aus jedem Kohlenstoff und ein einzelnes Elektronenpaar aus dem Heteroatom die unhybridisierten 2p-Orbitale.
Diese fünf Orbitale überlappen sich und bilden einen geschlossenen Kreislauf von 6 π Elektronen, wodurch Pyrrol aromatisch wird.
In Furan und Thiophen nehmen die zusätzlichen einsamen Elektronenpaare ein sp 2-Hybridorbital ein und sind nicht Teil des π Systems.
Imidazol hat zwei Stickstoffatome. Das einsame Paar auf einem der Stickstoffe ist Teil des aromatischen Sextetts. Das einsame Paar auf dem zweiten Stickstoff nimmt ein sp 2-Hybridorbital ein und ist nicht am π System beteiligt.

Heterocyclische aromatische Verbindungen sind cyclische Verbindungen, die aromatisch sind und ein oder mehrere Heteroatome – andere Atome als Kohlenstoff – im Ring aufweisen. Abhängig von der Anzahl der im Ring vorhandenen Atome können sie entweder fünf- oder sechsgliedrig sein. Beispiele für fünfgliedrige heterocyclische aromatische Verbindungen umfassen Pyrrol, Furan, Thiophen und Imidazol. Pyrrol besteht aus einem Stickstoffatom mit einem freien Elektronenpaar. Furan und Thiophen haben jeweils ein Sauerstoff- und ein Schwefelheteroatom. Beide besitzen zwei freie Elektronenpaare. Imidazol unterscheidet sich von den anderen drei dadurch, dass es zwei Stickstoffatome als Heteroatome mit einem freien Elektronenpaar an jedem Stickstoffatom hat. In allen vier heterozyklischen Verbindungen sind alle Atome sp^2-hybridisiert, einschließlich der Heteroatome.

Folglich haben alle Atome ein unhybridisiertes p-Orbital senkrecht zur Ringebene. In jedem Fall tragen alle Kohlenstoffatome ein π-Elektron bei, und die Heteroatome tragen ein freies Elektronenpaar bei, das das unhybridisierte p-Orbital besetzt. Damit ist das aromatische Sextett vervollständigt und eine geschlossene Schleife aus 6 π -Elektronen entsteht.

Die zusätzlichen freien Elektronenpaare des Sauerstoff- und Schwefel-Heteroatoms in Furan bzw. Thiophen besetzen das sp^2-Hybridorbital, das senkrecht zum p-Orbital liegt, und nehmen nicht am π-System teil. Im Fall von Imidazol besetzt das freie Elektronenpaar am zweiten Stickstoffatom das sp^2-Hybridorbital und ist nicht am aromatischen π-System beteiligt. Daher ist am aromatischen Sextett nur das freie Elektronenpaar eines Stickstoffatoms beteiligt.

Five-membered aromatic rings with heteroatoms are cyclic compounds that contain one or more atoms other than carbon in the ring. They are aromatic and can have either five or six atoms in the ring. Common examples include pyrrole, furan, thiophene, and imidazole.

These rings differ by the heteroatom present. Pyrrole has one nitrogen atom with one lone pair of electrons. Furan has one oxygen atom, and thiophene has one sulfur atom. Both furan and thiophene have two lone pairs of electrons. Imidazole has two nitrogen atoms, and each nitrogen has one lone pair of electrons.

In these compounds, the ring atoms are sp2 hybridized, including the heteroatoms. That means each atom has one unhybridized p orbital standing perpendicular to the ring plane. The carbon atoms each contribute one pi electron. The heteroatoms contribute one lone pair from the p orbital, which helps complete the aromatic sextet and forms a closed loop of 6 pi electrons.

Not every lone pair takes part in aromaticity. In furan and thiophene, the extra lone pair on oxygen or sulfur stays in an sp2 hybrid orbital and does not join the pi system. In imidazole, the lone pair on the second nitrogen also stays in an sp2 hybrid orbital. As a result, only one nitrogen lone pair is part of the aromatic sextet.
