In der Physik stoßen wir auf eine Vielzahl von Objekten, von Quarks, dem kleinsten Ding, das im Universum existiert, bis hin zur Sonne, dem größten, was wir sehen können.
Es ist schwierig, ein Gefühl für die Größe oder Kleinheit solcher Objekte zu bekommen. Um solche Größen auszudrücken, verwenden wir das Konzept der Größenordnungen oder der Zehnerpotenzmethode.
Hier werden alle Zahlen auf die Zehnerpotenz angenähert, die der gegebenen Größe am nächsten kommt. Zum Beispiel beträgt der Radius des Eisenkerns 4,6 Femtometer; Dabei handelt es sich nicht um den exakten Wert des Radius, sondern nur um eine Annäherung an die Größenordnung.
4,6 Femtometer kann man mit 4,6 mal 10 hoch minus 15 schreiben, der Radius des Kerns hat also eine Größenordnung von minus fünfzehn.
Größenordnungen helfen dabei, bestimmte Annahmen zu treffen und Berechnungen zu vereinfachen.
Bei der Berechnung der Schwerkraftbeschleunigung eines Objekts, das von einem Gebäude fällt, wird beispielsweise die Gebäudehöhe vernachlässigt, da sie einige Größenordnungen kleiner ist als der Erdradius.

Orders of Magnitude

Die Größenordnung einer Zahl ist die Potenz von 10, die ihr am nächsten kommt. Somit schätzt die Größenordnung den Maßstab oder die Größe ihres Wertes ab. Um die Größenordnung einer Zahl zu finden, nimmt man den dekadischen Logarithmus der Zahl und rundet ihn auf die nächste ganze Zahl. Dann ist die Größenordnung der Zahl einfach die resultierende Potenz von 10.

Die Größenordnung ist einfach eine Methode, Zahlen konsistent auf die nächste Potenz von 10 zu runden. Dies erleichtert das grobe Kopfrechnen mit sehr großen und sehr kleinen Zahlen. Zum Beispiel liegt der Durchmesser eines Wasserstoffatoms in der Größenordnung von 10-10 m, während der Durchmesser der Sonne in der Größenordnung von 109 m liegt. Es würde also etwa 109/10-10 = 1019 Wasserstoffatome benötigen, um den Durchmesser der Sonne zu überbrücken. Dies lässt sich viel einfacher im Kopf berechnen als mit den genaueren Werten von 1,06×10-10 m für den Durchmesser eines Wasserstoffatoms und 1,39×109 m für den Durchmesser der Sonne, um herauszufinden, dass es 1,31×1019 Wasserstoffatome bräuchte, um den Durchmesser der Sonne zu überbrücken. Neben der einfacheren Berechnung ist die grobe Schätzung auch fast genauso aussagekräftig wie die genaue Berechnung.

Orders of magnitude help estimate the scale of a number using powers of 10. It is a simple way to round values to the nearest power of 10. This makes it easier to compare very large and very small numbers.

To find the order of magnitude of a number, take its base-10 logarithm and round to the nearest integer. The result gives the power of 10 that most closely matches the original value. This method gives a consistent estimate of size without using exact digits.

Orders of magnitude are useful for rough mental math. For example, the diameter of a hydrogen atom is on the order of 10^-10 m. The diameter of the Sun is on the order of 10^9 m, so about 10^19 hydrogen atoms would stretch across the Sun’s diameter.

That estimate is much easier to work out in your head than the precise values. Using 1.06×10^-10 m for a hydrogen atom and 1.39×10^9 m for the Sun gives 1.31×10^19 atoms. The rough estimate is still nearly as informative as the exact calculation.
