Wenn ein Holzklotz, der auf der Wasseroberfläche schwimmt, nach unten gedrückt wird und auf und ab wippen kann, schwingt er um seine mittlere Position mit einer konstanten Amplitude, ähnlich einer einfachen harmonischen Bewegung.
Im Laufe der Zeit verringert eine dissipative Kraft, die als Dämpfungskraft des Wassers bekannt ist, die Amplitude der Schwingung mit einem gewissen Energieverlust, der ihrer Bewegung entspricht, und führt zu gedämpften harmonischen Schwingungen.
Die Dämpfkraft ist proportional zur Geschwindigkeit des Holzscheites, die das Maß für den Schwingungsabfall ist, der entgegen der Bewegung gerichtet ist.
Die Nettokraft entspricht den Rückstell- und Dämpfungskräften, die in entgegengesetzte Richtungen wirken.
Das Umordnen und Umschreiben der Geschwindigkeits- und Beschleunigungsgleichung in Bezug auf Ableitungen der Position in Bezug auf die Zeit führt zu einer quadratischen Differentialgleichung, die die gedämpfte harmonische Bewegung des Holzstammes beschreibt.

Damped Oscillations

In der realen Welt folgen Schwingungen selten der wahren einfachen harmonischen Bewegung. Ein System, das seine Bewegung unbegrenzt fortsetzt, ohne seine Amplitude zu verlieren, wird als ungedämpft bezeichnet. In der Regel dämpft jedoch eine Art von Reibung die Bewegung, sodass sie allmählich verschwindet oder mehr Kraft zum Fortsetzen benötigt. Zum Beispiel hört eine Gitarrensaite einige Sekunden nach dem Anzupfen auf zu schwingen. Ähnlich muss man eine Schaukel kontinuierlich anschieben, um ein Kind auf einem Spielplatz schwingen zu lassen.

Obwohl Reibung und andere nicht-konservative Kräfte vernachlässigbar klein sein können, ist eine vollständig ungedämpfte Bewegung selten. Oscillations in the real world often lose energy as they move. A system that keeps the same amplitude without any loss is called undamped. That kind of motion is rare, because friction and other non-conservative forces usually reduce the motion over time.

Common examples show this clearly. A guitar string stops vibrating a few seconds after it is plucked. A swing also needs a person to keep pushing it if the motion is to continue. In some devices, such as car shock absorbers, damping is useful because it helps control the motion.

When damping is small, the motion still looks much like simple harmonic motion. The period and frequency stay nearly the same, but the amplitude gets smaller and smaller. The damping force removes energy from the system, and that energy usually becomes thermal energy. Because mechanical energy is taken away, the work done by the non-conservative force, W nc, is negative.
