Stellen Sie sich einen Holzscheit vor, der auf der Wasseroberfläche schwimmt. Wenn man ihn nach unten drückt und auf und ab wippen lässt, schwingt er um seine mittlere Position. Wenn der Imaginärteil beim Lösen ungleich Null ist, erhält man die allgemeine Lösung für die Differentialgleichung relativ zur Position und der Kreisfrequenz innerhalb der zeitabhängigen exponentiellen Zerfallshüllkurve.

Daher oszilliert das System unter unterdämpften Bedingungen mit abklingender Amplitude, nachdem es einige mögliche Zyklen durchlaufen hat.
In kritischen Dämpfungszuständen sind die Dämpfungs- und Rückstellkräfte gleich, und die Kreisfrequenz wird Null, wodurch die Schwingungen des Systems exponentiell ausklingen.
Auf der anderen Seite ist die Dämpfkraft bei überdämpften Bedingungen relativ groß, wodurch das System langsam ins Gleichgewicht kommt.

Wenn die Dämpfung in einem System allmählich erhöht wird, werden Periode und Frequenz beeinflusst, da die Dämpfung der Hin- und Herbewegung entgegenwirkt und sie verlangsamt (die resultierende Kraft ist in beide Richtungen geringer). Bei sehr großer Dämpfung oszilliert das System nicht einmal; stattdessen bewegt es sich langsam auf das Gleichgewicht zu. Kurz gesagt bewegt sich ein überdämpftes System langsam auf das Gleichgewicht zu, während ein unterdämpftes System schnell auf das Gleichgewicht zusteuert, dabei aber um den Gleichgewichtspunkt oszilliert. Im Gegensatz dazu bewegt sich ein kritisch gedämpftes System so schnell wie möglich auf das Gleichgewicht zu, ohne um den Gleichgewichtspunkt zu oszillieren.

In der Regel ist eine kritische Dämpfung oft erwünscht, weil ein solches System nicht nur schnell zum Gleichgewicht zurückkehrt, sondern auch im Gleichgewicht bleibt. Darüber hinaus bewegt sich ein auf ein kritisch gedämpftes System angewendete konstante Kraft in kürzester Zeit zu einer neuen Gleichgewichtsposition, ohne zu überschwingen oder um die neue Position zu oszillieren. Wenn zum Beispiel eine Person auf einer Badezimmerwaage steht, die eine Nadelanzeige hat, bewegt sich die Nadel ohne zu oszillieren in ihre Gleichgewichtsposition. Es wäre sehr unpraktisch, wenn die Nadel lange um die neue Gleichgewichtsposition oszillieren würde, bevor sie sich niederlässt. Dämpfungskräfte können in ihrem Charakter stark variieren. Reibung ist zum Beispiel manchmal unabhängig von der Geschwindigkeit. Types of Damping

Damping changes how a system oscillates by reducing its back-and-forth motion. As damping increases, the period and frequency begin to change because damping opposes motion and lowers the net force in both directions.

When damping is very large, the system stops oscillating altogether. It then moves slowly toward equilibrium. An overdamped system reaches equilibrium slowly. An underdamped system reaches equilibrium faster, but it oscillates around the equilibrium point while doing so.

A critically damped system is different. It moves to equilibrium as quickly as possible without overshooting or oscillating. This is often the desired behavior because the system returns to equilibrium rapidly and stays there.

Critical damping is also useful when a constant force creates a new equilibrium position. In that case, the system moves to the new position in the shortest time possible without overshooting. A bathroom scale with a needle gauge is a common example. The needle moves to its equilibrium position and does not keep bouncing around it, which would be inconvenient.

Damping forces can also have different forms. Friction is sometimes independent of velocity. In many other cases, damping depends on velocity, either in complex ways or simply in proportion to velocity.
