Sound Waves

Schall ist eine mechanische Welle, die durch die Vibration eines Objekts erzeugt wird und ein Medium benötigt, um sich auszubreiten.
Während Hören die Fähigkeit ist, Schallwellen wahrzunehmen, indem es die Schwingungen im umgebenden Medium erkennt.
Schallwellen bringen die Teilchen des Mediums in Schwingung und transportieren Energie durch das Medium. Da sich die Welle parallel zur Richtung der Schwingungen ausbreitet, werden Schallwellen als Longitudinalwellen bezeichnet.
Während der Vibration bewegen sich die Partikel hin und her, was zu Hochdruck- und Niederdruckbereichen im Medium führt, die als Kompressionen bzw. Verdünnungen bekannt sind.
Im Weltraum können sich Schallwellen nicht ausbreiten, da es keine Teilchen gibt, die vibrieren und die Schallwelle ausbreiten.
Da Schall eine Druckwelle ist, kann er ähnlich wie periodische Wellengleichungen modelliert werden. Bei der Ausbreitung in der Luft können Schallwellen auch in Bezug auf die Verdrängung von Luftmolekülen modelliert werden.

Schallwellen können als Fluktuationen im Druck eines Mediums betrachtet werden, durch das sie sich ausbreiten. Da der Druck auch die Teilchen des Mediums entlang seiner Bewegungsrichtung zum Schwingen bringt, können die Wellen als Verschiebung der Teilchen des Mediums von ihrer mittleren Position modelliert werden.

Schallwellen sind in den meisten Flüssigkeiten longitudinal, da Flüssigkeiten keinen seitlichen Druck aufrechterhalten können. In Festkörpern helfen jedoch Scherkräfte, die Störung auch in seitlicher Richtung zu propagieren. Daher sind Schallwellen in Festkörpern sowohl longitudinal als auch transversal.

Das Medium absorbiert aufgrund seiner Viskosität einen Teil der durch die Schallwelle propagierten Energie. Bei jeder Kompression wird ein Teil der Energie in Wärme umgewandelt, und bei jeder Verdünnung kehrt eine geringere Menge davon zur Welle zurück. Daher verliert eine durch ein Medium propagierende Welle im Laufe der Zeit ihre Energie als zufällige thermische Energie an das umgebende Medium.

Die menschlichen Ohren sammeln Schallwellen in der Luft und leiten sie zum Gehirn weiter, das die Wahrnehmung des Hörens erzeugt. Sie sind empfindlich für eine Vielzahl von Schallwellenfrequenzen, von etwa 20 Hz bis 20.000 Hz. Dieser Bereich wird als hörbarer Bereich bezeichnet.

Sound travels through matter as pressure changes in a medium. These changes make the particles of the medium move back and forth around their mean position. Sound can also be modeled as particle displacement as the wave passes through air, water, or another material.

In most fluids, sound waves are longitudinal waves. That means the particles vibrate in the same direction that the wave moves. Fluids do not support lateral pressure well, so sound in liquids and gases mainly moves this way.

Solids behave differently. Shear forces in solids can help carry the disturbance sideways as well as forward. As a result, sound waves in solids can have both longitudinal and transverse motion.

Sound waves do not keep all of their energy as they travel. A medium with viscosity absorbs part of that energy. During compression, some energy turns into heat. During rarefaction, a smaller amount returns to the wave. Over time, the wave loses energy and becomes random thermal energy in the surrounding medium.

Human ears collect sound waves in air and send the information to the brain. That process creates the perception of hearing. The ear is sensitive to frequencies from about 20 Hz to 20,000 Hz, and this is called the audible range.
