Sound Intensity Level

Im Durchschnitt reagiert das menschliche Ohr empfindlich auf einen Schall mit einer Intensität von 10-12 Watt pro Quadratmeter bei einer Frequenz von 1000 Hertz und kann einen Schallbereich von bis zu 1 Watt pro Quadratmeter wahrnehmen. Sound intensity level helps measure how loud sound is. The human ear sends sound waves to the brain, and the brain turns those waves into hearing. The loudness of the surrounding environment affects whether a person can tell different sound sources apart.

The ear can detect a very wide range of sound intensity. Because of that range, scientists use a logarithmic scale to describe intensity level. Intensity level is a ratio of two intensities, so it has no unit. The standard reference is the faintest sound the human ear can barely hear, which is 10^-12 watt per square meter.

The human eardrum is only about one square centimeter. At the hearing threshold, it can process about 10^-16 watt of energy each second. That shows how sensitive the ear is. Sound intensity level is written in decibels, a name that comes from Alexander Graham Bell, who invented the telephone. On this scale, 120 decibels is the threshold of pain. Sounds above that level can damage the eardrum within seconds.
