Shock Waves

Stellen Sie sich eine Schallquelle vor, z. B. ein Flugzeug, das sich mit einer Geschwindigkeit von vs auf einen stationären Beobachter zubewegt. Wenn die Schallgeschwindigkeit in der Luft v ist, wird die Machzahl als Verhältnis der beiden Geschwindigkeiten definiert.
Wenn vs größer als v ist, wird die Machzahl größer als eins und die Geschwindigkeit wird als Überschall bezeichnet. Dann ist die beobachtete Frequenz des Schalls nach der Doppler-Formel negativ, was praktisch unmöglich ist.
Stattdessen nimmt der Betrachter keinen Schall wahr, bis die Quelle ihn passiert hat.
Die Schallwellen interferieren konstruktiv entlang der Linien eines dreidimensionalen Kegels. Innerhalb des Kegels greifen sie zerstörerisch ein. Somit ist der Rand des Kegels eine scharfe Trennlinie von Bereichen ohne Schall und destruktive Interferenzen. Das resultierende Muster wird als Stoßwelle bezeichnet.
Wendet man geometrische Konzepte an, so ist der Sinus des Kegelwinkels gleich dem Kehrwert der Machzahl.
Das plötzliche Eintreffen der Schockwelle wird als Überschallknall bezeichnet. Aufgrund des hohen Drucks können Überschallknalle, die von sich bewegenden Flugzeugen erzeugt werden, Fenster zertrümmern und unsere Nerven erschüttern.

Wenn sich die Geschwindigkeit der Quelle der Schallgeschwindigkeit nähert, kommt es unmittelbar hinter der Quelle zu einer konstruktiven Interferenz zwischen aufeinanderfolgenden Wellenfronten auf, die von der Quelle ausgestrahlt werden. Anfangs glaubten Wissenschaftler, dass diese konstruktive Interferenz zu so hohen Drücken führen würde, dass ein Flugzeug zum Beispiel nicht in der Lage wäre, die Schallgeschwindigkeit zu überschreiten und letztendlich zerstört würde. Heute können Flugzeuge jedoch mit Geschwindigkeiten fliegen, die größer sind als die Schallgeschwindigkeit, auch als Überschallgeschwindigkeiten bezeichnet. Sie erzeugen eine vertraute kegelförmige Struktur von Wellen hinter sich.

Das Phänomen der Stoßwellen ist dreidimensional und hat seinen Namen von dem scharfen Druckunterschied entlang der Kanten des Kegels. Dieser Kegel bewegt sich zusammen mit der Schallquelle und ist schmaler, wenn die Mach-Zahl (die Geschwindigkeit der Quelle geteilt durch die Schallgeschwindigkeit) höher ist. Ein Beobachter kann die Stoßwelle erst wahrnehmen, nachdem die Quelle an ihm vorbei ist. Wenn dies der Fall ist, erleben sie eine plötzliche Druckänderung, die als Überschallknall bekannt ist.

Stoßwellen sind ein spezieller Fall eines allgemeinen Wellenphänomens, das als Bugwelle bezeichnet wird. Das gleiche Prinzip von Stoßwellen gilt auch für andere Wellen wie Oberflächenwellen im Wasser. Sonic booms and supersonic motion happen when a sound source moves as fast as, or faster than, sound in the medium. In the Doppler formula for sound, it is usually assumed that sound travels faster than the source. When that assumption fails, a shock wave can form.

As the source gets close to the speed of sound, successive wavefronts build up by constructive interference right behind it. Scientists once thought this pressure buildup would keep an airplane from breaking the sound barrier and might even destroy it. Airplanes can now travel at supersonic speeds, which are speeds greater than the speed of sound.

A supersonic source creates a cone of waves behind it. This three-dimensional shape is called a shock wave. The name comes from the sharp pressure change along the edges of the cone. The cone moves with the source, and it becomes narrower when the Mach number is higher. The Mach number is the speed of the source divided by the speed of sound.

An observer does not feel the shock wave until the source has passed by. At that moment, the observer experiences a sudden pressure change called a sonic boom. Shock waves are also a special case of a broader wave pattern called a bow wake. The same idea appears in surface water waves, such as the wake left by a fast-moving duck or steamer on the water.
