Wenn genügend Energie eine Bindung aufbricht und ein Atom beide Elektronen erhält, was zur Bildung von Ionen führt, wird dies als Heterolyse bezeichnet.
Wenn die Elektronen als ungepaartes Bindungselektron gleichmäßig auf beiden Atomen verteilt sind und dabei Radikale erzeugen, spricht man von Homolyse.
Energie, die als Wärme von hohen Temperaturen zugeführt wird, kann die meisten Bindungen homolysieren, während Wärme etwas über Raumtemperatur einige schwache Bindungen homolysieren kann. Zum Beispiel wird die schwache O-O-Bindung in Peroxiden beim Erhitzen homolysiert, um Alkoxylradikale zu bilden.
Alternativ kann Licht einer geeigneten Wellenlänge bestimmte Bindungen homolysieren.
Die relativ schwachen Bindungen in Halogenmolekülen homolysieren leicht mit Hitze oder Licht, was zu Halogenidradikalen führt.

Radical Formation: Homolysis

Eine Bindung entsteht zwischen zwei Atomen durch die gemeinsame Nutzung zweier Elektronen. Wenn diese Bindung durch Zufuhr ausreichender Energie aufgebrochen wird, können entweder zwei Elektronen von einem Atom aufgenommen werden und durch die als Heterolyse bezeichnete Spaltung Ionen bilden, oder die beiden Elektronen werden von zwei Atomen geteilt, wobei jeweils eines durch die als Homolyse bezeichnete Spaltung Radikale erzeugt.

Beispielsweise spaltet HCl in Lösung in H^+- und Cl^−-Ionen, wobei das Chloratom beide Bindungselektronen mitnimmt und ein nacktes Proton zurücklässt. Bei etwa 200 °C in der Gasphase wird das Elektronenpaar, das die H-Cl-Bindung bildet, jedoch von beiden Atomen gemeinsam genutzt.

Einige schwache Bindungen werden bei etwa Raumtemperatur homolysiert. In solchen Fällen ist Licht die beste Energiequelle für die Homolyse von Bindungen. Peroxide und Halogene werden durch Wärme und Licht recht leicht homolysiert. Dibenzoylperoxid und Azobisisobutyronitril (AIBN) werden häufig als Initiatoren radikalischer Reaktionen verwendet, da sie leicht zu Radikalen homolysieren können.

Homolysis is a bond-breaking process that splits a shared electron pair evenly. When a bond is broken with enough energy, the two electrons can also move to one atom in heterolysis, which forms ions. Homolysis gives one electron to each atom and creates radicals, which are highly reactive particles with an unpaired electron.

HCl shows the difference between these bond cleavages. In solution, HCl can break into H+ and Cl− ions, and chlorine takes both bonding electrons, leaving a naked proton. In the gas phase at about 200 °C, the H–Cl bond is shared between the two atoms instead.

Some weak bonds undergo homolysis near room temperature. Light is often the best energy source for breaking these bonds. Peroxides and halogens are readily homolysed by heat and light.

Dibenzoyl peroxide and azobisisobutyronitrile, or AIBN, are common initiators in radical reactions. They can easily homolyse and form radicals. That makes them useful starting materials when a reaction needs radical formation.
