In Gegenwart von Wärme oder Licht reagieren Alkane mit molekularen Halogenen und bilden durch eine Substitutionsreaktion, die radikalische Halogenierung genannt wird, Alkylhalogenide. Diese Reaktion besteht aus drei Schritten: Initiierung, Ausbreitung und Beendigung, wie bei der radikalischen Chlorierung von Methan zur Herstellung von Methylchlorid.

Im Initiierungsschritt der Reaktion wird das Chlormolekül in Gegenwart von Licht oder Wärme homolytisch gespalten, wodurch zwei hochreaktive Chlorradikale entstehen. Die Ausbreitung erfolgt in zwei Schritten. Im ersten Ausbreitungsschritt entzieht das Chlorradikal einem Methanmolekül Wasserstoff und bildet so ein Methylradikal und ein Chlorwasserstoffmolekül. Im zweiten Ausbreitungsschritt abstrahiert das Methylradikal ein Chloratom von einem zweiten Chlormolekül, wodurch Methylchlorid entsteht und das Chlorradikal regeneriert wird. Alkanes can react with halogens to form alkyl halides when heat or light is present. This reaction is called radical halogenation. It is a substitution reaction, which means a hydrogen atom on the alkane is replaced by a halogen atom.

Radical chlorination of methane shows the process clearly. The reaction begins with initiation, when a chlorine molecule splits evenly under light or heat. This homolytic cleavage forms two very reactive chlorine radicals.

The next stage is propagation. In the first propagation step, a chlorine radical removes a hydrogen atom from methane. This produces a methyl radical and hydrogen chloride. In the second propagation step, the methyl radical takes a chlorine atom from another chlorine molecule. That step forms methyl chloride and regenerates a chlorine radical.

The reaction ends in the termination step. At this point, two radicals join together and the reactive intermediate is destroyed. Methyl chloride, the first product, is more reactive than methane and can be chlorinated again to form methylene chloride and then carbon tetrachloride. When excess methane reacts with a small amount of chlorine, methyl chloride is the major product.

Chlorine does not react very selectively, so higher alkanes usually give a mixture of mono-chlorinated isomers and polychlorinated products. That makes chlorination a poor synthetic method. Bromine is less reactive than chlorine, fluorine is even more reactive, and iodine is generally unreactive toward alkanes in radical halogenation.
