Die radikalische Halogenierung von Alkanen folgt einer unterschiedlichen Reaktivitätsordnung für verschiedene Halogene.
Dieser Unterschied lässt sich aus der Thermodynamik der Reaktion verstehen.
Für die Alkanhalogenierung ist der Entropieterm vernachlässigbar, da die Anzahl der Reaktanten und Produktmoleküle gleich ist. Daher wird ΔG äquivalent zu ΔH.
Denken Sie an die radikalische Fluorierung von Methan. Die Enthalpie der Reaktion wird aus den Dissoziationsenergien der aufgebrochenen und gebildeten Bindungen geschätzt.
Das Gesamt-ΔH für die Reaktion ist negativ und groß, was die Reaktion thermodynamisch günstig, aber hochexplosiv und unpraktisch macht.
Umgekehrt macht der positive ΔH-Wert für die Jodierung diese thermodynamisch ungünstig und unmöglich zu erreichen. 
Daher sind nur Chlorierung und Bromierung mit negativen ΔH-Werten thermodynamisch günstig und praktisch machbar.
Ein Vergleich der beiden Reaktionen zeigt, dass die Bromierung langsamer abläuft als die Chlorierung.
Ein genauerer Blick auf die einzelnen Vermehrungsschritte zeigt, dass der erste Vermehrungsschritt der Bromierung endothermer ist, was sich auf die Gesamtreaktionsgeschwindigkeit auswirkt.
Da die Nettoreaktion noch exotherm ist, kommt es zur Bromierung, allerdings langsam.

Die thermodynamische Günstigkeit einer Reaktion wird durch die Änderung der freien Gibbs-Energie (ΔG) bestimmt. ΔG hat zwei Komponenten - Enthalpie (ΔH) und Entropie (ΔS). Die Entropiekomponente ist bei der Alkanhalogenierung vernachlässigbar, da die Anzahl der Reaktanten und der Produktmoleküle gleich ist. In diesem Fall wird das ΔG nur von der Enthalpiekomponente bestimmt. Der wichtigste Faktor, der ΔH bestimmt, ist die Stärke der Bindungen. ΔH kann durch den Vergleich der Energie zwischen gebrochenen und gebildeten Bindungen bestimmt werden.

Ausgehend von der Thermodynamik der Reaktion weist die radikalische Halogenierung von Alkanen eine unterschiedliche Reihenfolge der Reaktivität für Fluorierung, Bromierung und Iodierung auf. Der ΔH-Wert für die radikalische Iodierung ist positiv (+55 kJ/mol), was darauf schließen lässt, dass der ΔG-Wert für diese Reaktion ebenfalls positiv ist. Daher ist die Iodierung thermodynamisch ungünstig und die Reaktion findet nicht statt. Andererseits ist der Gesamt-ΔH-Wert für die radikalische Fluorierung von Methan groß und negativ (-431 kJ/mol), so dass die Reaktion thermodynamisch günstig, aber stark exotherm ist und keinen praktischen Nutzen hat. Der ΔH-Wert für die Chlorierung und die Bromierung beträgt -104 kJ/mol bzw. -33 kJ/mol, so dass diese Reaktionen thermodynamisch günstig und praktisch durchführbar sind. Der Vergleich der Reaktionsgeschwindigkeit zwischen Chlorierung und Bromierung zeigt, dass die Bromierung langsamer ist als die Chlorierung. Der geschwindigkeitsbestimmende Schritt für diese Reaktion ist der erste Ausbreitungsschritt oder der Wasserstoffabstraktionsschritt. Der erste Ausbreitungsschritt bei der Chlorierungsreaktion ist exotherm und die Aktivierungsenergie ist gering, während dieser Schritt bei der Bromierung endotherm ist und die Aktivierungsenergie groß ist, was erklärt, warum die Bromierung langsamer ist als die Chlorierung.

alkane halogenation: stability and reaction rates

Alkane halogenation is shaped by thermodynamic stability and reaction rate. In radical halogenation, the key question is whether the reaction is favorable and how fast it happens. Gibbs free energy, or ΔG, helps answer the first question.

ΔG has two parts: enthalpy, or ΔH, and entropy, or ΔS. For alkane halogenation, the entropy term is negligible because the number of reactant and product molecules is the same. That means ΔG is controlled mainly by enthalpy.

Bond strength is the most important factor in ΔH. Scientists estimate ΔH by comparing the energy needed to break bonds with the energy released when new bonds form. This comparison explains why fluorination, chlorination, bromination, and iodination do not all behave the same way.

Radical iodination has a positive ΔH of +55 kJ/mol. That makes ΔG positive as well, so the reaction is thermodynamically unfavorable and does not take place. Radical fluorination of methane has a very large negative ΔH of -431 kJ/mol, so it is favorable but highly exothermic and not practical.

Chlorination and bromination are both thermodynamically favorable. Their ΔH values are -104 kJ/mol for chlorination and -33 kJ/mol for bromination. This makes both reactions feasible, but bromination happens more slowly than chlorination.

The rate-determining step is the first propagation step, also called hydrogen abstraction. For chlorination, this step is exothermic and has a small activation energy. For bromination, the same step is endothermic and has a large activation energy, which explains the slower rate.
