Die Lorentzschen Peaks in einem NMR-Spektrum werden durch ihre Position, Amplitude und volle Breite bei halbem Maximum definiert.
Die Peakbreite einer richtig präparierten Probe in einem perfekt homogenen Feld wird allein durch die Spin-Spin-Relaxationszeit bestimmt.
Das angelegte Magnetfeld B0 wird jedoch durch das Vorhandensein der Probe und der Sonde inhomogenisiert. Dies führt zu verbreiterten Peaks mit überflüssigen Seitenbändern und schlechter Auflösung.
Magnetfeldinhomogenitäten werden durch ein Verfahren namens Shimming korrigiert.
Während des Shimmings wird Strom durch einen Satz von Shim-Spulen geleitet, die die Sonde umgeben, wodurch kleine Magnetfelder erzeugt werden, die B0 in der Nähe der Probe verstärken oder entgegenwirken.
Diese Shim-Spulenfelder werden manipuliert, um ein möglichst gleichmäßiges Magnetfeld über die Probe zu erhalten.
Das Shimming, zusammen mit optimierten Pulssequenzparametern und der richtigen Probenvorbereitung, sorgt für eine gute Peakform, ein hohes Signal-Rausch-Verhältnis und maximale Auflösung.

Lorentzsche Peaks in einem NMR-Spektrum werden durch ihre Amplitude, Halbwertsbreite und Position definiert, wobei die Peakbreite allein durch die Spin-Spin-Relaxationszeit bestimmt wird. In realen Experimenten wird das angelegte Magnetfeld jedoch durch die Anwesenheit der Probe und der Sonde inhomogen, was zu verbreiterten Peaks mit fremden Seitenbändern und einer schlechten Auflösung führt.

Diese Inhomogenitäten werden vor der Aufnahme der Spektren durch einen Prozess namens Shimming korrigiert. Eine Reihe von Shimspulen umgibt die Sonde und erzeugt abhängig vom durch sie fließenden Strom kleine Magnetfelder. Diese Felder können B0 in der Nähe der Probe verstärken oder entgegenwirken. Beim Shimming werden die Spulenfelder manipuliert, um ein möglichst gleichmäßiges Magnetfeld über die Probe zu erhalten und die Inhomogenitäten zu korrigieren. Shimming, optimierte Pulssequenzparameter und die richtige Probenvorbereitung sorgen für eine gute Peakform, ein niedriges Signal-Rausch-Verhältnis und maximale Auflösung.

NMR peak shape depends on the signal created after magnetic nuclei resonate and relax. The detected free induction decay is approximately exponential. When that decay is Fourier transformed, it becomes a Lorentzian peak in the frequency domain.

A Lorentzian peak in an NMR spectrum is described by its amplitude, full width at half maximum, and position. Its width is governed by the spin-spin relaxation time alone. In real experiments, the sample and probe can make the magnetic field inhomogeneous. This can broaden peaks, add side-bands, and reduce resolution.

These field problems are corrected before spectra are recorded by shimming. Shim coils surround the probe and produce small magnetic fields based on the current applied to them. Their fields can either enhance or oppose B0 near the sample. By adjusting the coil fields, shimming makes the magnetic field more uniform across the sample.

Good shimming works best with optimized pulse sequence parameters and proper sample preparation. Together, these steps help produce good peak shape, low signal-to-noise ratio, and maximum resolution in NMR spectra.
