Warum sind manche Cycloadditionsreaktionen thermisch erlaubt und andere verboten?
Beginnen wir mit der Untersuchung der Wechselwirkung zwischen den Grenzorbitalen der reagierenden Komponenten – HOMO und LUMO.
Unter thermischen Bedingungen verlaufen Cycloadditionen über den Grundzustand HOMO und LUMO.
Eine gleichzeitige Überlappung des Bondens ist nur möglich, wenn die Endkeulen der beiden π Komponenten in Phase sind.
In einer [4 + 2]-Cycloaddition weisen die reagierenden Enden übereinstimmende Symmetrien für eine Face-to-Face-Bonding-Wechselwirkung auf. Es wird gesagt, dass die beiden π Komponenten an beiden Enden suprafacial interagieren, was es zu einem konzertierten symmetriegesteuerten Prozess macht.
In einer [2 + 2]-Cycloaddition führt die Symmetrie-Diskrepanz jedoch zu einer Bindungs- und einer Antibindungswechselwirkung.

Bei thermischen Cycloadditionen handelt es sich um Reaktionen, bei denen die zur Initiierung der Reaktion erforderliche Aktivierungsenergiequelle in Form von Wärme bereitgestellt wird. Ein typisches Beispiel für eine thermisch erlaubte Cycloaddition ist die Diels-Alder-Reaktion, bei der es sich um eine [4 + 2]-Cycloaddition handelt. Im Gegensatz dazu ist eine [2 + 2]-Cycloaddition thermisch verboten.

Die Reaktion findet zwischen dem höchsten besetzten Molekülorbital (HOMO) der einen π-Komponente und dem niedrigsten unbesetzten Molekülorbital (LUMO) der anderen statt. Diese werden als Grenzmolekülorbitale bezeichnet. Unter thermischen Bedingungen verläuft die Reaktion über die Grundzustände HOMO und LUMO. Damit Cycloadditionen konzertiert ablaufen können, müssen die Endlappen der interagierenden Systeme die gleiche Symmetrie aufweisen.

Bei einer [4 + 2]-Cycloaddition sind die Endlappen der 4-π- und 2-π-Komponenten in Phase und interagieren

suprafazial. Folglich ist die Reaktion thermisch zulässig. Bei einer [2 + 2]-Cycloaddition führt die Symmetriefehlanpassung jedoch zu einer suprafazialen Wechselwirkung an einem Ende und einer antarafazialen Wechselwirkung am anderen Ende. Thermal cycloadditions are reactions that use heat as the activation energy. In these reactions, the molecular orbitals of the reacting pi systems control whether the process can happen.

A common thermally allowed example is the Diels-Alder reaction. It is a [4 + 2] cycloaddition, where a 4 pi component reacts with a 2 pi component. The frontier molecular orbitals are the highest occupied molecular orbital, or HOMO, and the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital, or LUMO. Under thermal conditions, the reaction proceeds from the ground-state HOMO and LUMO.

For a cycloaddition to occur in a concerted manner, the terminal lobes of the interacting systems must have the same symmetry. In a [4 + 2] cycloaddition, the terminal lobes of the 4 pi and 2 pi components are in phase. They interact suprafacially, so the reaction is thermally allowed.

A [2 + 2] cycloaddition behaves differently. Here, the symmetry does not match, so one end interacts suprafacially and the other end antarafacially. That geometric constraint makes the reaction thermally forbidden under heat.
