Aber warum?
Es sei daran erinnert, dass eine Symmetriefehlanpassung zwischen dem Grundzustand HOMO und LUMO von Ethylen verhindert, dass die Reaktion unter thermischen Bedingungen in einer konzertierten suprafazialen Weise abläuft.
Alternativ befördert die photochemische Anregung eines der Ethylenmoleküle ein Elektron aus dem Grundzustand HOMO zum LUMO.
Dadurch erhält der angeregte Zustand HOMO die richtige Symmetrie, um mit dem Grundzustand LUMO des anderen Ethylenmoleküls zu interagieren, was zu einer konzertierten suprafazialen Überlappung der beiden Komponenten führt.
Zusammenfassend lässt sich sagen, dass für photochemische Cycloadditionen die Schlüsselwechselwirkung zwischen HOMO und LUMO zwischen dem elektronischen Grundzustand einer Komponente und dem angeregten Zustand der anderen Komponente besteht. Im Vergleich dazu treten thermische Zykloadditionen zwischen den Grundzustandsgrenzorbitalen beider Komponenten auf.

Thermisch induzierte [2 + 2] Cycloadditionen sind symmetrisch verboten. Der Grund dafür ist, dass das HOMO des einen Ethylenmoleküls im Grundzustand und das LUMO des anderen Ethylenmoleküls phasenverschoben sind, was eine konzertierte Überlappung von suprafazialem und suprafazialem Zustand verhindert.

Some cycloaddition reactions need light instead of heat. A [2 + 2] cycloaddition between two ethylene molecules is one example. It is allowed under photochemical conditions but forbidden under thermal conditions.

A thermal [2 + 2] cycloaddition is symmetry forbidden. The ground-state HOMO of one ethylene molecule and the LUMO of the other are out of phase. That mismatch prevents a concerted suprafacial-suprafacial overlap.

UV light changes the electron arrangement in one ethylene molecule. Absorption of UV light promotes an electron from the ground-state HOMO to the LUMO. The excited-state HOMO then has the symmetry needed to interact with the LUMO of the other ethylene. This allows the reaction to proceed by a concerted, symmetry-allowed pathway.
