Magnetism

Magnetismus wurde erstmals vor über 2500 Jahren in der Nähe der antiken Stadt Magnesia beobachtet.
Magnete sind in Alltagsgegenständen wie Lautsprechern, Kreditkarten, Kompassen und Speichergeräten zu finden.
Ein Stabmagnet hat einen Nord- und einen Südpol. Wenn ein nicht magnetisierter Eisennagel mit ihm in Berührung gebracht wird, wird er magnetisiert.
Gleiche Pole eines Magneten stoßen sich ab, während ungleiche Pole sich gegenseitig anziehen.
Die Pole eines Magneten lassen sich nicht trennen, indem man sie in zwei Teile zerbricht. Stattdessen erhält man kleinere Magnete mit jeweils einem Nord- und einem Südende. Daher werden magnetische Monopole nie beobachtet.
In einem Navigationskompass ist die Nadel ein dünner Stabmagnet, der in seiner Mitte aufgehängt ist.
Der Nordpol eines Kompasses wird nahe am geografischen Nordpol der Erde angezogen.
Die Erde verhält sich auch wie ein riesiger Stabmagnet, mit ihrem magnetischen Südpol in der Nähe des geografischen Nordpols und ihrem magnetischen Nordpol in der Nähe des geografischen Südpols.
Die Achse des Erdmagneten und die geographische Achse stimmen nicht überein. Diese Abweichung wird als magnetische Deklination bezeichnet.

Magnete sind in alltäglichen Gegenständen wie Spielzeug, Kleiderbügeln, Aufzügen, Türklingeln und Computervorrichtungen häufig anzutreffen. Experimente mit diesen Magneten zeigen, dass alle Magnete zwei Pole haben: einen Nordpol (N) und einen Südpol (S). Magnetische Pole stoßen sich ab, wenn sie gleich sind, und ziehen sich an, wenn sie unterschiedlich sind. Außerdem ziehen beide Pole eines Magneten unmagnetisierte Eisenteile an.

Ein einzelner magnetischer Pol kann nicht isoliert werden. Jedes Stück eines Magneten enthält unabhängig von seiner Größe einen Nordpol und einen Südpol. Diese Eigenschaft von Magneten unterscheidet sich von der Eigenschaft elektrischer Ladungen, bei der sowohl positive als auch negative Ladungen isoliert existieren können.

Ein Beispiel für einen Magneten ist eine Kompassnadel. Es handelt sich um einen dünnen Stabmagneten, der in der Mitte aufgehängt ist und sich frei in einer horizontalen Ebene drehen kann. Die Erde wirkt auch wie ein riesiger Magnet, mit ihrem Südpol in der Nähe ihres geografischen Nordpols. Der Nordpol eines Kompasses wird zum geografischen Nordpol der Erde hin angezogen, weil der geografische Nordpol der Erde in der Nähe des magnetischen Südpols liegt.

Im Jahr 1819 bemerkte der dänische Physiker Hans Oersted während einer Vorlesungsdemonstration für einige Studenten, dass sich eine Kompassnadel bewegte, wenn in einem nahegelegenen Draht Strom floss. Eine weitere Untersuchung dieses Phänomens überzeugte Oersted davon, dass ein elektrischer Strom irgendwie eine magnetische Kraft verursachen konnte.

Heutzutage spielt Magnetismus eine wichtige Rolle in unserem Leben. Das Verständnis von Physikern über Magnetismus hat die Entwicklung von Technologien ermöglicht, die sowohl Einzelpersonen als auch die Gesellschaft beeinflussen. Zum Beispiel wäre das elektronische Tablet in der Tasche oder im Rucksack ohne die Anwendung von Magnetismus und Elektrizität im kleinen Maßstab nicht möglich gewesen.

Alle Elektromotoren enthalten Magnete. Generatoren, die hydroelektrische Energie erzeugen oder Fahrradlichter betreiben, verwenden magnetische Felder. Recyclinganlagen setzen Magnete ein, um Eisen von anderen Abfällen zu trennen. Die Forschung zur Nutzung der magnetischen Einschließung der Kernfusion als künftige Energiequelle wird seit mehreren Jahren fortgesetzt. Die Magnetresonanztomografie (MRT) ist ein wichtiges diagnostisches Werkzeug in der Medizin, und die Nutzung von Magnetismus zur Erforschung der Gehirnaktivität ist ein Thema zeitgenössischer Forschung und Entwicklung. Die Liste der Anwendungen umfasst auch Computerfestplatten, Tonbandaufnahmen, die Erkennung von eingeatmetem Asbest und die Levitation von Hochgeschwindigkeitszügen.

Magnetism appears in many everyday objects, from toys and hangers to elevators, doorbells, and computer devices. Magnets have two poles, called north and south. Like poles repel each other, while unlike poles attract. Both poles can also attract unmagnetized iron. A single magnetic pole cannot be isolated, because every part of a magnet contains both a north pole and a south pole.

A compass needle is a simple example of a magnet. It is a thin bar magnet suspended at its center, so it can turn freely in a horizontal plane. Earth also behaves like a giant magnet. Its south-seeking pole is near the geographic North Pole. That is why the north end of a compass points toward Earth’s geographic North Pole, which is close to Earth’s magnetic south pole.

The link between electricity and magnetism became clear in 1819. During a lecture demonstration, Danish physicist Hans Oersted noticed that a compass needle moved when current flowed in a nearby wire. Further study showed that an electric current can create a magnetic force. This discovery helped scientists connect electric currents with magnetic effects.

Magnetism is important in many modern technologies. Electric motors contain magnets, and generators use magnetic fields to produce power, including hydroelectric power and bicycle lights. Recycling facilities use magnets to separate iron from other waste. Magnetism also supports MRI, computer hard drives, tape recording, detection of inhaled asbestos, research on brain activity, and the levitation of high-speed trains. Work on magnetic containment for fusion energy is also ongoing.
