Der mechanische Wirkungsgrad einer Maschine ist das Verhältnis von Output zu Inputarbeit.
Für eine ideale Maschine ist das Verhältnis eins, was bedeutet, dass die Eingangs- und Ausgangsarbeit gleich sind.
Bei einem idealen Kniehebelschraubstock, der Holz zusammendrückt, entspricht beispielsweise die Ausgangsarbeit aufgrund der Reaktionskraft der Eingangsarbeit aufgrund der ausgeübten Kraft.
Im Gegensatz dazu erfährt eine reale Maschine eine Reibungskraft.
Die Reibungskraft kann aus der normalen Reaktionskraft gewonnen werden.
Die gesamte virtuelle Arbeit aufgrund der beitragenden Kräfte, wenn sie im Prinzip der virtuellen Arbeit angewendet wird, ergibt die Outputarbeit als die Differenz zwischen der Eingabearbeit und der Arbeit aufgrund der Reibungskraft.
Die Division der Ausgangsarbeit durch die Eingangsarbeit ergibt den mechanischen Wirkungsgrad. Die Effizienz ohne Reibung ist eine davon. Bei einem Reibungskoeffizienten ungleich Null ist der Wirkungsgrad jedoch Null, wenn der Umschaltwinkel gleich dem Reibungswinkel ist, und negativ für einen Umschaltwinkel, der kleiner als der Reibungswinkel ist.
Dies bedeutet, dass ein Schraubstock nur für einen Kniehebelwinkel verwendet werden sollte, der größer als der Reibungswinkel ist.

Die mechanische Effizienz einer Maschine ist ein grundlegender Begriff, der beschreibt, wie effektiv eine Maschine Eingangsarbeit in Ausgangsarbeit umwandeln kann. Gemäß diesem Konzept entspricht die Effizienz einer Maschine dem Verhältnis von Ausgangsarbeit zu Eingangsarbeit. Eine ideale Maschine, das heißt eine Maschine ohne Energieverluste, hat eine Effizienz von eins. Das bedeutet, dass die Eingangsarbeit und die Ausgangsarbeit gleich sind. Allerdings kann in der Realität keine Maschine wirklich ideal sein, und alle erleiden eine Form von Energieverlust. Eine der Hauptursachen für Energieverluste in Maschinen ist die Reibung. Betrachten wir zum Beispiel einen Knebelspanner, der Holzblöcke zusammendrückt. In Abwesenheit von Reibung ist die Ausgangsarbeit des Spanners gleich der Eingangsarbeit der aufgebrachten Kraft, was ihn zu einer idealen Maschine macht. Allerdings erfährt der gleitende Block des Spanners in der Realität eine Reibungskraft gegen die horizontale Ebene. Um die mechanische Effizienz eines realen Spanners zu bestimmen, berechnen Sie zunächst die Normalkraft und die entsprechende Reibungskraft. Ermitteln Sie dann die Gesamtarbeit aller Kräfte während der virtuellen Verschiebung. Durch Anwendung des Prinzips der virtuellen Arbeit ergibt sich die Ausgangsarbeit des Spanners als Differenz zwischen der Eingangsarbeit und der Arbeit der Reibungskraft. Folglich kann die Nettoreaktionskraft berechnet werden, die gleich null ist, wenn der Winkel des Spanners dem Reibungswinkel entspricht, und negativ ist, wenn er kleiner als der Reibungswinkel ist. Das bedeutet, dass der Spanner nur verwendet werden sollte, wenn sein Winkel den Reibungswinkel übersteigt. Die mechanische Effizienz des Spanners in Abwesenheit von Reibung beträgt eins. Wenn jedoch Reibung vorhanden ist, kann die Effizienz null oder kleiner als eins werden, abhängig vom Reibungskoeffizienten. Je niedriger der Reibungskoeffizient, desto näher kommt die Effizienz eins— umgekehrt, je höher der Reibungskoeffizient, desto niedriger die Effizienz. In der Realität kann keine Maschine völlig ideal sein, und sie alle erleiden eine Form von Energieverlusten durch Reibung. Mechanical efficiency shows how well a machine turns input work into output work. It is calculated as the ratio of output work to input work. An ideal machine has an efficiency of one, which means the input work equals the output work.

Real machines are never perfectly ideal because some energy is lost. Friction is one of the main causes of that loss. In a toggle vise used to compress wooden blocks, the sliding block rubs against the horizontal plane and creates friction.

To find the efficiency of a real vise, first calculate the normal reaction and the frictional force. Then use the principle of virtual work to evaluate the total virtual work of all the forces during a virtual displacement. With friction present, the output work equals the input work minus the work done by friction.

This analysis also gives the net reaction force. It is zero when the angle of the vise equals the angle of friction. It becomes negative when the angle is smaller than the angle of friction, so the vise should be used only when its angle is greater than the friction angle.

A vise with no friction has an efficiency of one. When friction is present, the efficiency can be less than one or even zero, depending on the coefficient of friction. A lower coefficient of friction gives an efficiency closer to one, while a higher coefficient lowers the efficiency.
