Stellen Sie sich einen Ausleger vor, auf den Kräfte von 1000 N, 600 N, 750 N und 500 N an unterschiedlichen Punkten B, C, D und E wirken. Das Moment, das an einem Punkt A durch eine bestimmte Kraft erzeugt wird, ist das Produkt einer der Kräfte mit dem entsprechenden senkrechten Abstand vom Punkt der Krafteinwirkung zum Fixpunkt A.
Dabei erzeugen die Kräfte F1, F2 und F3 ein Moment im Uhrzeigersinn, das herkömmlich als negativ angesehen wird, während das durch die Kraft F4 erzeugte Moment unter Berücksichtigung der Richtung gegen den Uhrzeigersinn positiv ist.
Das resultierende Moment, das auf alle vier Kräfte zurückzuführen ist, wird als algebraische Summe aller Momente berechnet, die von jeder Kraft im System erzeugt werden.
Da die Größe des resultierenden Moments negativ ist, wirkt es hier im Uhrzeigersinn.
Nehmen wir nun an, dass die Richtung der Kraft F3 umgekehrt ist. Das resultierende Moment ist positiv und gibt ein Moment gegen den Uhrzeigersinn um Punkt A an.

Net moment in two-dimensional force systems shows how multiple forces can cause rotation about a fixed point. To find the resultant moment, the moments from all forces in the system are considered about a chosen point A. Each moment is assigned a sign based on its sense of rotation. Positive moments are usually counterclockwise and point along the positive z-axis. Negative moments are clockwise.

The calculation uses the algebraic sum of each force multiplied by its perpendicular distance from point A.
