Wenn ein Balken einer Last ausgesetzt ist, erfährt er Schnittgrößen, die als Normal-, Schub- und Biegemomente kategorisiert werden können.
Schnittgrößen können mit Hilfe der Methode der Schnitte ermittelt werden. Da sie paarweise auftreten, wird eine spezielle Vorzeichenkonvention angewendet, und ihre Richtung hängt davon ab, welche Seite des Schnitts analysiert werden soll.
Es wird davon ausgegangen, dass die Normalkraft positiv ist, wenn sie Spannung erzeugt, während sie als negativ angesehen wird, wenn sie eine Kompression im Objekt erzeugt.
Angenommen, die tangential zum Querschnitt wirkenden Kräfte sind auf der linken bzw. rechten Seite des Querschnitts nach unten bzw. oben gerichtet. In diesem Fall wird die Querkraft als positiv angesehen, was zu einer Drehung im Uhrzeigersinn führt.
Ähnlich verhält es sich, wenn die Richtung der Kräfte auf jeder Seite umgekehrt wird, was zu einer Drehung gegen den Uhrzeigersinn führt.
Wenn eine äußere Kraft auf den Balken wirkt, erfährt er ein Biegemoment, das eine nach oben oder unten gekrümmte Krümmung bildet. Das Biegemoment ist positiv für die Aufwärtskrümmung und negativ für die Abwärtskrümmung.

Beim Analysieren eines Balkens, der verschiedenen Belastungen ausgesetzt ist, ist es entscheidend, die inneren Kräfte und Momente zu verstehen, die innerhalb der Struktur erzeugt werden. Diese inneren Kräfte können grob in Normalkräfte, Schubkräfte und Biegemomente eingeteilt werden. Um diese Kräfte und Momente zu bestimmen, verwenden wir die Methode der Schnitte und wenden eine spezifische Vorzeichenkonvention basierend auf ihrer Richtung und der Seite des analysierten Schnitts an. Die Normalkraft wirkt senkrecht auf den Querschnitt des Balkens und kann Zug oder Druck in dem Objekt verursachen. Wenn die Normalkraft Zug erzeugt, wird sie als positiv angenommen, während sie bei Druck als negativ betrachtet wird. Die Schubkraft bezieht sich auf die Kräfte, die tangential auf den Querschnitt des Balkens wirken. Diese Kräfte treten normalerweise paarweise auf, wobei eine Kraft auf der linken Seite des Schnitts und die andere auf der rechten Seite wirkt. Wenn die Kraft auf der linken Seite nach unten gerichtet ist und die Kraft auf der rechten Seite nach oben gerichtet ist, wird die Schubkraft als positiv betrachtet, was zu einer Drehung im Uhrzeigersinn führt. Wenn die Richtung der Kräfte auf jeder Seite umgekehrt ist, entsteht eine negative Schubkraft, die zu einer Drehung gegen den Uhrzeigersinn führt. Das Biegemoment ist der Rotationseffekt, der durch eine externe Kraft auf den Balken verursacht wird. Wenn der Balken einer solchen Kraft ausgesetzt ist, erfährt er eine Krümmung, die entweder nach oben (konkav) oder nach unten (konvex) sein kann. Die Vorzeichenkonvention für Biegemomente besagt, dass ein positives Biegemoment einer nach oben (konkav) gerichteten Krümmung entspricht, während ein negatives Biegemoment einer nach unten (konvex) gerichteten Krümmung entspricht. Diese Konvention spielt eine entscheidende Rolle beim Verständnis des Verformungsmusters des Balkens und beim Entwurf geeigneter Bauelemente zur Widerstandsfähigkeit gegen Biegung. Beam analysis depends on the internal forces and moments inside a structure. These include normal force, shear force, and bending moment. Engineers use the method of sections to cut the beam and find these values. A sign convention helps show whether each result is positive or negative.

Normal force acts perpendicular to the beam’s cross-section. It can pull the material in tension or push it in compression. Tension is taken as positive, while compression is taken as negative. This makes it easier to read and compare force results during structural analysis.

Shear force acts tangentially along the cross-section of the beam. It often appears as a pair of forces, with one side of the cut carrying the left-side force and the other side carrying the right-side force. A downward force on the left side and an upward force on the right side represent positive shear and a clockwise rotation. If the directions are reversed, the shear force is negative and the rotation is counterclockwise.

Bending moment describes the turning effect created by an external force on a beam. It changes the beam’s shape into either an upward, concave curve or a downward, convex curve. A positive bending moment gives upward, concave curvature. A negative bending moment gives downward, convex curvature. These conventions help predict how beams deform under load and support better structural design.
