Titration of a Weak Acid with a Weak Base

Die Titrationskurve zwischen schwacher Säure und schwacher Base wird durch Messung des pH-Werts während der verschiedenen Punkte der Titration dargestellt.
Bei der Titration von 100 ml 0,1 M Essigsäurelösung mit 100 ml 0,1 M wässrigem Ammoniak beträgt der anfängliche pH-Wert 2,87.
Wenn die schwache Säure und die schwache Base identische Ka- und Kb-Werte aufweisen, beträgt der pH-Wert am Äquivalenzpunkt 7, was auf eine neutrale Lösung hindeutet. Wenn Ka größer als Kb ist, beträgt der pH-Wert am Äquivalenzpunkt weniger als 7. Wenn Ka kleiner als Kb ist, ist der pH-Wert größer als 7.
Die pH-Änderung während der gesamten Titrationskurve ist allmählich, wobei kein scharfer Endpunkt beobachtet wird. Es kann jedoch eine Mischung aus neutralen roten und Methylenblau-Indikatoren verwendet werden, um den Endpunkt zu nähern.

Wenn solche Studien beispielsweise für die Titration einer schwachen Säure mit einer schwachen Base durchgeführt werden, stellt die Titrationskurve die Änderung des pH-Werts als Funktion des zugesetzten Basenvolumens dar. Nehmen wir zum Beispiel die Titration von Essigsäure mit Ammoniak. Während der Titration bilden diese beiden Spezies Ammoniumacetat und Wasser, die pH-Änderung erfolgt jedoch langsam und allmählich.
Daher gibt es keinen einfachen Indikator, der seine Farbe abrupt ändert und dabei hilft, den Äquivalenzpunkt genau zu bestimmen. Ein relativ einfacher Weg, dies zu erreichen, besteht darin, zwei Indikatoren – in diesem Fall Neutralrot und Methylenblau – so zu mischen, dass das Gemisch am Äquivalenzpunkt einen starken Farbumschlag zeigt – hier von Violettblau nach Grün.
Für eine schwache Säure und eine schwache Base mit identischen Ka - und Kb-Werten beträgt der am Äquivalenzpunkt berechnete pH-Wert 7. Wenn Ka größer als Kb ist, liegt der pH-Wert unter 7, wodurch die Endpunktlösung sauer wird. Wenn Ka jedoch kleiner als Kb ist, ist der berechnete pH-Wert größer als 7, was zu einer basischen Lösung am Endpunkt führt.

Weak acid and weak base titration is used to follow how pH changes as base is added. In this kind of titration, both the acid and the base dissociate only partly. The titration curve shows a slow, gradual pH change instead of a sharp jump.

A common example is the titration of acetic acid with ammonia. During the reaction, these two species form ammonium acetate and water. Because the pH changes so gradually, there is no simple indicator that shifts color sharply at the equivalence point.

One practical solution is to mix two indicators, neutral red and methylene blue. The mixed indicator gives a clearer color change at the endpoint, from violet-blue to green. For a weak acid and weak base with the same Ka and Kb values, the pH at the equivalence point is 7. If Ka is greater than Kb, the pH is less than 7 and the endpoint is acidic. If Ka is less than Kb, the pH is greater than 7 and the endpoint is basic.
