Während die gekrümmte Linie die Titration von Essigsäure und Natriumhydroxid darstellt, bezeichnen die geraden Linien mit der Bezeichnung Alpha-Knoten und Alpha-Eins die relative Gleichgewichtskonzentration von Essigsäure- bzw. Acetationen.
Zunächst deutet der Alpha-Knoten-Wert von 0,987 darauf hin, dass 98,7 % der Essigsäure undissoziiert sind, während die restlichen 1,3 % Acetationen sind.
Am Kreuzungspunkt oder am halben Äquivalenzpunkt entspricht der pH-Wert pKa. Dementsprechend weist die Lösung eine gleiche Konzentration von Essigsäure- und Acetationen auf.
Im Verlauf der Titration sinkt die Konzentration der Essigsäure, des Alpha-Knotens, am Äquivalenzpunkt auf nahezu Null. Alternativ steigt die Konzentration der Acetat-Ionen, Alpha-on, an und nähert sich der Eins.

Eine Lösung aus Essigsäure und Natriumacetat stellt einen Puffer dar, dessen relative Konzentration in den verschiedenen Phasen der Titration durch die α-Werte angegeben wird, die den Prozentsatz der schwachen Säure und ihrer konjugierten Base darstellen.

Die Werte α0 und α1 stellen die relative Gleichgewichtskonzentration von Essigsäure bzw. Acetationen dar. Vor dem Hinzufügen der Base betragen die α0 - und α1-Werte 0,987 bzw. 0,013. Dies legt nahe, dass die Lösung 98,7 % Essigsäure und 1,3 % Acetationen enthält. Durch die Zugabe von Natriumhydroxid während der Titration nimmt α0 ab, während α1 zunimmt. Am Halbäquivalenzpunkt, an dem der pH-Wert dem pKa-Wert von Essigsäure entspricht, ist der Wert von α0 gleich α1. Acetic acid buffer changes during a weak acid–strong base titration. When acetic acid is titrated with sodium hydroxide, the reaction forms water and the conjugate base of the acid, sodium acetate. The mixture of acetic acid and sodium acetate acts as a buffer, which helps show how solution makeup shifts during the titration.

The relative amounts of acetic acid and acetate ions are tracked with α values. Here, α0 represents the equilibrium concentration of acetic acid, and α1 represents the equilibrium concentration of acetate ions. Before base is added, α0 is 0.987 and α1 is 0.013. That means the solution is about 98.7% acetic acid and 1.3% acetate ions.

As sodium hydroxide is added, α0 goes down and α1 goes up. At the half-equivalence point, the pH equals the pKa of acetic acid. At that stage, α0 and α1 are equal, so the solution contains 50% acetic acid and 50% acetate ions. As the titration continues to the equivalence point, α0 drops to zero and α1 becomes unity.
