Buffers: Buffer Capacity

Die Pufferkapazität, dargestellt als Beta, ist das quantitative Maß für die Beständigkeit eines Puffers gegen pH-Änderungen bei Zugabe einer Säure oder Base. Sie wird ausgedrückt als die Anzahl der Mol Säure (Ca) oder Base (Cb), die einer Ein-Liter-Pufferlösung zugesetzt werden, bevor eine pH-Änderung der Einheit vorgenommen wird.
Je höher die Pufferkapazität, desto höher ist die Fähigkeit des Puffers, der pH-Änderung zu widerstehen.
Zu einer Säure mit pKa gleich 5 wird die Anzahl der zugegebenen Mol Base gegen den pH-Wert aufgetragen. Die Ableitung der erhaltenen Kurve zeigt die höchste Pufferkapazität, wenn der pH-Wert gleich pKa ist, wobei die Konzentration der schwachen Säure und ihrer konjugierten Base in der Pufferlösung gleich ist. Der effektive pH-Bereich eines Puffers ist also eine Einheit mehr oder weniger als der pKa.
Außerhalb des pH-Bereichs von 3-10 widersteht die vorhandene hohe Konzentration an H+- oder OH−-Ionen der pH-Änderung der zugesetzten Säure oder Base.
Die Konzentration der Pufferspezies bestimmt proportional die Pufferkapazität.

Die Pufferkapazität ist das quantitative Maß dafür, dass ein Puffer einer pH-Änderung standhält. Wie in der folgenden Gleichung dargestellt, wird die Pufferkapazität, bezeichnet mit "beta", als die Anzahl der Mole von Säuren oder Basen ausgedrückt, die benötigt werden, um den pH-Wert einer 1-Liter-Pufferlösung um 1 Einheit zu verändern. Dabei geben Ca und Cb die Anzahl der Mole der Säure bzw. der Base an. Beachten Sie, dass dpH die Änderung des pH-Werts darstellt.

Buffer capacity describes how well a buffer resists changes in pH. It is a quantitative measure, so it tells how much acid or base a one-liter buffer solution can take before its pH shifts by 1 unit. In the equation, beta is the buffer capacity, while Ca and Cb represent the moles of acid and base added. The term dpH means the change in pH.

A graph of pH versus the moles of base added to a weak acid with a pKa of 5 shows how buffering works as more base is added. Taking the derivative of that curve gives a second plot, which shows buffer capacity across different pH values. The buffer capacity is highest when pH equals pKa. At that point, the weak acid and its conjugate base are present at equal concentrations.

For this weak acid, the strongest resistance to pH change occurs at pH 5. That is why a buffer should usually have a pKa within plus or minus 1 unit of the target pH. Buffer capacity also depends on how much weak acid and conjugate base are in the solution. Higher concentrations of these buffer species lead to higher buffer capacity.
