Das Potential und der Strom in Zwei-Elektroden-Zellen werden typischerweise mit einer Kombination aus einer Referenzelektrode und entweder einer Arbeitselektrode oder einer Indikatorelektrode gemessen.
Bei einem potentiometrischen Test reagiert die Indikatorelektrode durch eine Redoxreaktion proportional zur Konzentration des Analyten.
Zu den gängigen Arten von Indikatorelektroden gehören inerte Metallelektroden, reversibel reaktive Metallelektroden und ionenselektive Membranelektroden.
Referenzelektroden haben wie die gesättigte Kalomelelektrode und die Silber-Silberchlorid-Elektrode ein konstantes Potential bei einer bestimmten Temperatur, unabhängig von Änderungen in der Analytzusammensetzung. Sie funktionieren am besten, wenn der durch sie fließende Strom gering ist, und bieten ein festes Referenzpotential für die Indikatorelektrode.
Das relative Potential der Indikatorelektrode wird in Bezug auf das feste Referenzpotential gemessen, das von der Referenzelektrode bereitgestellt wird.
Bei Methoden, bei denen ein Stromfluss erforderlich ist, kann jedoch eine dritte Elektrode – die als Hilfselektrode oder Gegenelektrode bezeichnet wird – hinzugefügt werden. Diese Hilfselektroden ermöglichen den Stromfluss durch die Zelle, um den Stromkreis zu vervollständigen.

Der zweite Typ, die Referenzelektrode oder Bezugselektrode, vervollständigt den Stromkreis und liefert ein konstantes Potenzial bei konstanter Temperatur, an dem das Potenzial der Indikatorelektrode gemessen wird. Idealerweise sollte das Potenzial der Referenzelektrode konstant bleiben, sodass jede Änderung des Gesamtpotenzials der Indikatorelektrode zugeschrieben werden kann. Zu den üblichen Referenzelektroden gehören Kalomel-, Silber-Silberchlorid- und Standardwasserstoffelektroden.

Bei dynamischen Verfahren, bei denen der Stromfluss die Konzentration der Stoffe in der elektrochemischen Zelle verändert, kann jedoch eine dritte Elektrode, die sogenannte Hilfs- oder Gegenelektrode, hinzugefügt werden. Die Hilfselektrode schließt den Stromkreis und erleichtert den Stromfluss innerhalb der elektrochemischen Zelle.

Electrodes are conductive materials in an electrochemical cell. They allow electron transfer reactions to happen at their surfaces. Electrochemical measurements use them to control and measure current and potential.

The working electrode, also called the indicator electrode, is the main sensing electrode. Its potential changes with the analyte concentration and with the activity of the electroactive species. Common indicator electrodes include inert platinum electrodes, silver electrodes that respond to Ag+, halides, and other ions that react with Ag+, and ion-selective electrodes.

The reference electrode provides a constant potential at a constant temperature. It completes the electric circuit and serves as the stable point of comparison for the working electrode. If its potential stays constant, any change in the cell potential can be linked to the working electrode. Common reference electrodes include calomel, silver-silver chloride, and standard hydrogen electrodes.

In dynamic methods, a third electrode may be added. This auxiliary, or counter, electrode also completes the electrical circuit. It helps current flow when the passage of current changes the concentration of species in the electrochemical cell.
