Im Gegensatz zu Bulk-Methoden messen elektrochemische Grenzflächenverfahren die Signale, die an der Grenze zwischen einer Elektrode und einer Lösung erzeugt werden.
Diese Methoden werden als statisch oder dynamisch kategorisiert, je nachdem, ob die Zelle einen Strom ungleich Null hat.
Bei statischen Methoden, wie z. B. der Potentiometrie, wird das Potenzial der Zelle gemessen, ohne dass ein signifikanter Strom durch die Elektroden fließt, wodurch die Lösungszusammensetzung innerhalb der Zelle unverändert bleibt.
Im Gegensatz dazu handelt es sich bei dynamischen Methoden um chemische Reaktionen, die die Analytkonzentrationen verändern und einen Strom ungleich Null in der Zelle verwenden. Diese Methoden werden weiter unterteilt, je nachdem, ob der Strom oder die Spannung gesteuert wird, während die andere variiert wird.
Bei der Coulometrie mit geregeltem Strom wird beispielsweise ein konstanter Strom verwendet, um den Analyten entweder zu oxidieren oder zu reduzieren.
In der Zwischenzeit überwacht die Amperometrie – eine Methode mit kontrolliertem Potential – den Strom unter Beibehaltung eines konstanten Potentials, das die Elektrolysereaktion des Analyten auslöst.

Static and dynamic electrochemical methods study what happens at the boundary between an electrode and a solution. These interfacial methods focus on the electrode-solution interface rather than the overall properties of the liquid. They are useful in electroanalytical chemistry because they can detect very small changes in analyte concentration.

These methods are grouped by whether a nonzero current flows through the cell. Static methods, such as potentiometry, measure the cell potential without significant current. Because little or no current passes through the electrodes, the solution composition stays unchanged.

Dynamic methods work differently. They use a nonzero current and involve chemical reactions that change analyte concentrations. Some dynamic methods control the current, while others control the potential and then measure the response of the other variable.

Controlled-current coulometry is one dynamic method. It keeps the current constant so the analyte is oxidized or reduced. Amperometry is another example. It is a controlled-potential method that measures current at a fixed potential and promotes electrolysis of the analyte.

Interfacial electrochemical methods are valued for their speed, selectivity, and sensitivity. They also cover a wide dynamic range, typically from 10^-3 to 10^-8 M. These features make them useful in many electroanalytical applications.
