Membranelektroden, auch als p-Ionenelektroden bekannt, verwenden Membranen, die selektiv mit freien Analytionen interagieren und so eine Potentialdifferenz über die Membran erzeugen. Das resultierende Membranpotential, das als Asymmetriepotential bezeichnet wird, ist nicht Null, selbst wenn die Analytkonzentrationen auf beiden Seiten der Membran gleich sind. Die Reaktion der Membran ist normalerweise nicht selektiv auf einen einzelnen Analyten, sondern proportional zur Konzentration aller Ionen in der Probenlösung, die an den aktiven Stellen der Membran interagieren können. Der Selektivitätskoeffizient misst die relative Reaktion des Störstoffes gegenüber dem Analyten. Ein Wert unter 1,00 weist auf eine gute Selektivität für den Analyten hin. Diese Selektivität wird bei hohem pH-Wert auf andere Kationen ausgedehnt.

Festkörperelektroden verwenden selektiv durchlässige Membranen aus anorganischen Salzkristallen, um die Kationen oder Anionen des selektiv verwendeten Salzes zu messen.

Flüssigmembranelektroden ermöglichen eine schnelle und genaue Bestimmung der Ionenkonzentrationen. Diese Elektroden bestehen aus einer hydrophoben Membran mit selektiven organischen Komplexbildnern oder Ionenaustauschern, die selektiv auf bestimmte mehrwertige Kationen oder Anionen in der Lösung reagieren.

Gassensorelektroden bestimmen gelöste Gaskonzentrationen mithilfe gasdurchlässiger Membranen, die es dem Zielgas ermöglichen, in eine interne Elektrolytlösung zu diffundieren. Membrane electrodes measure ions by using a selective membrane that creates a potential difference across it. This membrane potential is called the asymmetry potential, and it can remain nonzero even when analyte concentrations are the same on both sides of the membrane. The signal usually depends on all ions in the sample that can interact with the membrane, not just one analyte.

Selectivity is described by a selectivity coefficient. This value compares the response to an interferent with the response to the analyte. A value below 1.00 means the electrode is more selective for the analyte. Membrane electrodes are grouped as glass, crystalline solid-state, liquid-based, and gas-sensing electrodes based on the membrane material.

Glass electrodes use glass membranes that contain metal ions. When the membrane is placed in a solution, it hydrates and forms negatively charged sites with sodium ions as counterions. Hydrogen ions from the solution move into the membrane and displace sodium ions, which gives strong H+ selectivity at low pH. At high pH, this selectivity extends to other cations.

Solid-state electrodes use selectively permeable membranes made from inorganic salt crystals. They are used to measure the cations or anions of the salt in a selective way. Liquid-membrane electrodes use a hydrophobic membrane with organic complexing agents or ion exchangers. These electrodes can give rapid and accurate measurements of ion concentration, especially for certain polyvalent cations or anions.

Gas-sensing electrodes measure dissolved gases with a gas-permeable membrane. The target gas diffuses through the membrane into an internal electrolyte solution. A chemical reaction between the gas and the electrolyte produces a potential difference that matches the gas concentration in the outside solution. Potentiometric biosensors, including enzyme electrodes, attach biologically active species to the membrane. When the analyte reacts with the enzyme, the product is monitored by the ion-selective electrode.
