Wobei Q die erforderliche Gesamtladung, n die Anzahl der beteiligten Elektronen und F (Faradaysche Konstante) ungefähr 96.485 C/mol ist. Für coulometrische Messungen ist eine Stromausbeute von 100 % erforderlich.

Coulometrische Methoden verwenden entweder einen konstanten Strom oder ein kontrolliertes Potenzial. Coulometry is an analytical method that finds the amount of an analyte by measuring the electrical charge needed for its complete electrolysis. It is known for being rapid, accurate, and precise. Unlike many other methods, it does not require analytical standards.

The total charge passed during electrolysis is linked to the amount of analyte through Faraday's laws of electrolysis. For correct coulometric measurements, the charge supplied must match Faraday's constant multiplied by the number of electrons in the half-reaction. This relationship is written as Total Charge (Q) = n x F, where Q is the total charge required, n is the number of electrons involved, and F is Faraday's constant, about 96,485 C/mol.

Coulometric measurements also require 100% current efficiency. That means the electrical current must be used completely for the intended electrochemical reaction. Coulometry can be performed with constant current or controlled potential.

In constant-current coulometry, the current stays the same while the charge passed through the cell is measured over time. In controlled-potential coulometry, the potential stays constant while the current changes over time and the charge is still measured. Both methods use electrical charge to determine analyte quantity.
