Bei der Polarographie, einer klassischen voltammetrischen Technik, wird ein linearer Potentialsweep auf eine tropfende Quecksilberelektrode (DME) angewendet und der resultierende Strom gemessen.
Bei der DME bildet sich ein kleines Quecksilbertröpfchen an der Kapillarspitze, das kontinuierlich abfällt, wodurch bei jeder Messung eine neue Elektrodenoberfläche entsteht.
Das resultierende Strom-Potential-Diagramm, das als Polarogramm bezeichnet wird, gibt Auskunft über das Halbwellenpotential, den Differenzstrom, den Grenzstrom und den Diffusionsstrom. Der Diffusionsstrom ist direkt proportional zur Analytkonzentration in der Lösung.
Die Polarographie wird verwendet, um Metallionen, anorganische Anionen und organische Verbindungen zu analysieren, die funktionelle Gruppen enthalten, die leicht reduziert oder oxidiert werden können.
Auf der anderen Seite misst die hydrodynamische Voltammetrie den Strom als Funktion des gleichen Potentialprofils wie die Polarographie, wird jedoch auf eine feste Arbeitselektrode angewendet.

Bei dieser Methode wird ein linearer Potentialdurchlauf an einer Quecksilbertropfelektrode (DME) durchgeführt und der resultierende Strom gemessen. Die Quecksilbertropfelektrode wird häufig als Arbeitselektrode in der Polarographie verwendet. Sie besteht aus einem mit Quecksilber gefüllten Kapillarröhrchen, an dessen Spitze sich ein winziger Tropfen bildet. Dieser Tropfen fällt kontinuierlich aus der Kapillare und erzeugt bei jeder Messung eine neue Elektrodenoberfläche.

Bei einer polarographischen Messung variiert das an die DME angelegte Potential linear im Laufe der Zeit. Wenn sich das Potential ändert, durchlaufen die in der Lösung vorhandenen elektroaktiven Spezies je nach angelegtem Potential Reduktions- oder Oxidationsreaktionen an der Elektrodenoberfläche. Der resultierende Strom wird gegen das Potential aufgetragen, wodurch eine Strom-Potential-Kurve entsteht, die als Polarogramm bezeichnet wird. Die Polarographie findet Anwendung in verschiedenen Bereichen wie der analytischen Chemie, der Umweltanalytik und der elektrochemischen Forschung.

Die hydrodynamische Voltammetrie unterscheidet sich von der Polarographie dadurch, dass anstelle der Quecksilbertropfelektrode eine Metallelektrode als feste Arbeitselektrode verwendet wird. Bei dieser Technik wird ein Potential an die feste Arbeitselektrode angelegt und der resultierende Strom gemessen. Ein Voltammogramm entsteht, indem das Potential über einen spezifischen Bereich variiert wird, was eine Stromkurve in Abhängigkeit vom angelegten Potential ergibt. Polarography and hydrodynamic voltammetry are voltammetric techniques used to study electrochemical reactions. They track the current that flows as the electrode potential changes. In polarography, the key working electrode is a dropping mercury electrode, or DME.

A DME uses a capillary tube filled with mercury. A tiny mercury droplet forms at the tip and then drops away. This gives a fresh electrode surface for each measurement. During the test, the potential applied to the DME changes linearly over time.

As the potential shifts, electroactive species in the solution can undergo reduction or oxidation at the electrode surface. The measured current is plotted against the potential to make a polarogram, which is the current-potential curve for polarography. This method has been used in analytical chemistry, environmental analysis, and electrochemical research.

Hydrodynamic voltammetry uses a solid metal electrode instead of a mercury drop electrode. The potential is varied over a set range, and the resulting current is recorded. The output is a voltammogram, a plot of current versus applied potential. Unlike polarograms, voltammograms do not show the current oscillations caused by mercury drop formation.
