Die zyklische Voltammetrie untersucht die Redoxeigenschaft eines chemischen Systems über eine elektrochemische Zelle.
Diese Zelle besteht aus Arbeits-, Referenz- und Gegenelektroden, die in einen Elektrolyten eingetaucht sind, der den interessierenden Analyten enthält.
Eine dreieckige Potentialwellenform wird an die Arbeitselektrode angelegt, wodurch das Potential zwischen einem Anfangswert, einem Scheitelpunktpotential und zurück zum Ausgangswert geschwenkt wird.
Das Potential beginnt bei einem Anfangswert, bei dem keine Redoxreaktion stattfindet, und geht dann zu einem Wert über, bei dem der Analyt an der Arbeitselektrodenoberfläche entweder eine Reduktion oder eine Oxidation erfährt.
Das Potential wird dann umgekehrt und auf seinen ursprünglichen Wert zurückgekehrt, so dass die Umkehrreaktion stattfinden kann.
Der aus der Redoxreaktion gemessene Strom, aufgetragen gegen das Potential, ergibt ein zyklisches Voltammogramm mit zwei unterschiedlichen Peaks: einem anodischen Peak für die Oxidation und einem kathodischen Peak für die Reduktion.
Die Peakpositionen geben die Redoxpotentiale an, während die Spitzenströme proportional zur Konzentration des Analyten sind.

Zyklische Voltammetrie (CV) ist eine elektrochemische Technik, mit der die Redoxeigenschaften einer chemischen Spezies untersucht werden. Dabei wird die Stromantwort einer elektrochemischen Zelle als Funktion des angelegten Potentials gemessen. Der Aufbau für die zyklische Voltammetrie besteht typischerweise aus einer Arbeitselektrode, einer Referenzelektrode und einer Gegenelektrode – alle in eine Elektrolytlösung eingetaucht. An der Arbeitselektrode findet die betreffende Redoxreaktion statt, während die Referenzelektrode ein stabiles Potential als Referenz liefert und die Gegenelektrode den Stromkreis für den Stromfluss schließt.

Der Prozess beginnt mit dem Einstellen eines Startpotentials an der Arbeitselektrode, normalerweise an dem Punkt, an dem keine elektrochemische Reaktion stattfindet. Das Potential wird dann linear in eine Richtung verändert, bis es einen voreingestellten Wert erreicht. An diesem Punkt wird die Richtung des Potentialdurchlaufs umgekehrt, sodass das Potential zurück zum Ausgangswert bewegt wird. Wenn das angelegte Potential eine elektrochemische Reaktion (entweder Oxidation oder Reduktion) an der Elektrodenoberfläche auslöst, führt dies zu einem Stromfluss. Cyclic voltammetry measures how current changes as the potential at an electrode is varied. It is used to study the redox properties of a chemical species, meaning how easily it is oxidized or reduced.

The setup uses three electrodes in an electrolyte solution. The working electrode is where the redox reaction of interest takes place. The reference electrode provides a stable potential, and the counter electrode completes the circuit for current flow.

The process starts at a chosen initial potential, usually one where no electrochemical reaction occurs. The potential is then increased in a straight line to a preset value. After that, the sweep is reversed and moved back toward the starting point.

When the applied potential reaches a level that drives a reaction at the electrode surface, current begins to flow. The graph produced is called a cyclic voltammogram. It plots current against applied potential and shows anodic and cathodic peaks, which represent oxidation and reduction, respectively.
