Die Amperometrie wird bei der Konstruktion chemischer Sensoren eingesetzt.
So entwickelte L. C. Clark den ersten amperometrischen Sensor zur Messung der Konzentration von gelöstem Sauerstoff im Blut. Diese ist von einer gasdurchlässigen Membran umhüllt und besteht aus einer Platinkathode und einer Silber-Silberchlorid-Anode in einer Kaliumchloridlösung als Elektrolyt.
Wenn eine Spannung zwischen Kathode und Anode angelegt wird, diffundieren die gelösten Sauerstoffmoleküle über die Membran und werden an der Kathodenoberfläche reduziert. Die Anode liefert die Elektronen für diese Reaktion und erzeugt einen elektrischen Strom, der proportional zur Sauerstoffkonzentration in der Probe ist.
Die Amperometrie wird auch in Glukose-Biosensoren zur Überwachung des Blutzuckers eingesetzt.

Die Amperometrie ist eine Technik, die häufig verwendet wird, um die Konzentration spezifischer Analyten in einer Lösung zu messen, indem der während einer elektrochemischen Reaktion erzeugte elektrische Strom überwacht wird. Dabei wird ein konstantes Potential zwischen einer Arbeitselektrode und einer Referenzelektrode angelegt, um den resultierenden Strom zu messen, der proportional zur Konzentration des Analyten ist. Die Clark-Sauerstoffelektrode arbeitet nach diesem Prinzip der Amperometrie. Sie besteht aus einer Kathode und einer Anode, die in einer gasdurchlässigen Membran eingeschlossen sind. Normalerweise besteht die Kathode aus Platin oder Gold, während die Anode aus Silber besteht. Wenn zwischen der Kathode und der Anode ein Potential angelegt wird, diffundieren Sauerstoffmoleküle durch die gasdurchlässige Membran und werden an der Kathodenoberfläche reduziert, wodurch ein Strom erzeugt wird. Dieser Strom ist proportional zur Konzentration des gelösten Sauerstoffs in der Probe.

Die Amperometrie wird häufig zur Überwachung des Blutzuckers verwendet. Bei amperometrischen Blutzuckersensoren wird ein Biosensoransatz verwendet. Der Sensor besteht aus einer Platin- oder Goldelektrode, die mit dem Enzym Glucoseoxidase immobilisiert ist. Glucoseoxidase katalysiert die Oxidation von Glucose zu Gluconsäure und Wasserstoffperoxid. Der amperometrische Sensor legt ein Potential zwischen der enzymbeschichteten Arbeitselektrode und einer Referenzelektrode an. Da Glucose in der Blutprobe vorhanden ist, reagiert sie mit dem immobilisierten Enzym und erzeugt Wasserstoffperoxid. Das erzeugte Wasserstoffperoxid wird dann an der Arbeitselektrode elektrochemisch oxidiert, was zu einem messbaren Strom führt. Die Stärke des induzierten Stroms ist direkt proportional zur Glucosekonzentration in der Blutprobe.

Amperometry measures specific analytes in a solution by tracking the electric current from an electrochemical reaction. A constant potential is applied between a working electrode and a reference electrode. The current that results is proportional to the analyte concentration.

The Clark oxygen electrode is a common example of amperometry. It uses a cathode and an anode sealed inside a gas-permeable membrane. The cathode is typically platinum or gold, and the anode is silver. When a potential is applied, oxygen diffuses through the membrane and is reduced at the cathode surface. This creates a current that reflects the amount of dissolved oxygen in the sample.

Amperometry is also widely used in blood glucose monitoring. In this biosensor setup, a platinum or gold electrode is coated with the enzyme glucose oxidase. The enzyme catalyzes glucose oxidation and produces gluconic acid and hydrogen peroxide. A potential is applied between the enzyme-coated working electrode and a reference electrode. As glucose in the blood sample reacts, hydrogen peroxide forms and is then oxidized at the working electrode. The measured current is directly proportional to the glucose concentration in the blood sample.
