Modelle sind Darstellungen von Phänomenen, die schwer direkt zu beobachten sind. Zum Beispiel kann die Weiterentwicklung atomarer Modelle erklären, wie Atome zusammengesetzt sind und woraus Materie besteht.
Eine Theorie erklärt Naturphänomene auf der Grundlage von Beobachtungen, Experimenten und grundlegenden Prinzipien.
Zum Beispiel hat Galileo leichte und schwere Objekte von einem Turm abgeworfen. Aus diesem Experiment schlug er eine Theorie vor, nach der die Beschleunigung eines fallenden Körpers unabhängig von seinem Gewicht ist. Die Fallgeschwindigkeit einer Feder und eines Baseballs ist jedoch nicht gleich, es sei denn, sie werden in einem Vakuum fallen gelassen, um den Luftwiderstand zu eliminieren.
Galileis Vorhersage entspricht einem idealisierten Modell, das nur für Objekte gilt, deren Gewicht viel größer ist als die von der Luft ausgeübte Kraft.
Ein wissenschaftliches Gesetz ist eine prägnante Aussage, die das Verhalten eines natürlichen Phänomens beschreibt. Ein Gesetz sagt voraus, was passiert, während eine Theorie vorschlägt, warum.

Wissenschaftler verwenden häufig Modelle, um eine spezifische Sammlung von Phänomenen besser zu verstehen. In der Physik ist ein Modell eine vereinfachte Version eines physikalischen Systems, das zu komplex ist, um es gründlich zu untersuchen. Ein solches Beispiel ist das Modell der Lichtwellen; im Gegensatz zu Wasserwellen sind Lichtwellen für uns in der Regel unsichtbar. Nichtsdestotrotz ist es hilfreich, Licht als aus Wellen bestehend zu betrachten, da Untersuchungen zeigen, dass Licht sich wie Wasserwellen verhält. Da es unmöglich ist, visuell zu sehen, was tatsächlich passiert, dient ein Modell als grobe geistige oder visuelle Darstellung des Phänomens. Ein Modell ähnelt in der Regel strukturell dem untersuchten Phänomen und ist relativ einfach. Ein hilfreiches Modell erhält die wichtigen Bestandteile eines Problems, während es gleichzeitig vereinfacht wird, um praktikabel zu sein.

Eine Theorie hingegen ist umfassender, tiefergehender und in der Lage, präzise Vorhersagen zu machen, die statistisch getestet werden können. Das untersuchte Phänomen wird für eine breitere Perspektive als Theorie bezeichnet.

Physiker studieren natürliche Vorkommnisse und suchen nach Verbindungen zwischen ihnen. Wenn diese Muster gut etabliert und häufig angewendet sind, werden sie als physikalische Gesetze oder Prinzipien bezeichnet. Bestimmte prägnante, aber allgemeine Aussagen von Wissenschaftlern darüber, wie die Natur funktioniert, wurden als Gesetze klassifiziert. Die Formulierung eines Gesetzes nimmt häufig die Form einer Gleichung oder Beziehung zwischen zwei Größen an. Zum Beispiel besagt das Gesetz der Ladungserhaltung, dass die Nettoladung eines isolierten Systems immer erhalten bleibt. In den meisten Fällen unterstützen Experimente die Aussagen, die als Gesetze bezeichnet werden, über ein breites Spektrum beobachtbarer Vorkommnisse. Eine Aussage wird als "Gesetz" bezeichnet, wenn ihre Anwendbarkeit über ein breites Spektrum von Situationen hinweg festgestellt wurde und Einschränkungen und der Anwendungsbereich gut verstanden sind.

Es ist wichtig, zwischen einem Modell oder einer Theorie und dem tatsächlichen System oder den Vorkommnissen zu unterscheiden. Wissenschaftliche Gesetze sind beschreibend und sollen beschreiben, wie die Natur sich verhält, nicht wie sie sich verhalten sollte. Scientific models, theories, and laws help physicists describe natural phenomena. A model is a simplified version of a physical system that is too complex to study in full. It acts as a rough mental or visual picture of what may be happening. Good models keep the important parts and simplify the rest so the problem becomes workable.

The light wave model is one example. Light waves are usually invisible, so they cannot be seen in the same way as water waves. Even so, it is useful to think of light as waves because experiments show that light behaves like water waves. A model should resemble the phenomenon in a structural way, but it is not the same thing as the real system.

A theory goes further than a model. It is more complete, more detailed, and can make precise predictions that can be tested statistically. Physicists use theories to study natural events and the connections between them. The phenomenon being studied is viewed in a broader way when it is described as a theory.

When patterns are well established and used often, they are called physical laws or principles. A law is a short but general statement about how nature behaves. It often appears as an equation or a relationship between two quantities. For example, the law of conservation of charge says that the net electric charge of an isolated system remains conserved.

Experiments usually support laws across a wide range of observable situations. A statement is called a law when its range of use is known and its limits are understood. It is important to separate a model, theory, or law from the actual system or event it describes. Scientific laws are descriptive, so they explain how nature behaves, not how it should behave. Like theories, laws cannot be tested in every possible case.
