Betrachten Sie das Ersatzschaltungsmodell eines Operationsverstärkers. Die Ausgangssektion besteht aus einer spannungsgesteuerten Quelle, die mit dem Ausgangswiderstand in Reihe geschaltet ist.

Bei kleinen Spannungsunterschieden verhält sich der Operationsverstärker linear. Wenn die Spannung die Versorgungsspannung überschreitet, sättigt der Operationsverstärker.
Die Kombination aus angelegter Spannung und negativer Rückkopplung stellt sicher, dass der Operationsverstärker innerhalb seines linearen Bereichs arbeitet.
Moderne Verstärker verfügen über große Verstärkungen und Eingangswiderstände, so dass sie als ideale Operationsverstärker angenähert werden können.
Ein idealer Operationsverstärker verfügt über eine unendliche Open-Loop-Verstärkung, einen unendlichen Eingangswiderstand und einen Nullausgangswiderstand. Sowohl die Eingangsanschlussströme als auch die Eingangs-Offset-Spannung sind in einem idealen Operationsverstärker Null.
Darüber hinaus verfügt es über eine unendliche Bandbreite, die es ihm ermöglicht, Signale jeder Frequenz zu verstärken, und eine unendliche Anstiegsrate, was bedeutet, dass es die Ausgangsspannung im Laufe der Zeit schnell ändern kann.

Ebenso entspricht der Ausgangswiderstand Ro dem am Ausgang erkennbaren Thėvenin-Äquivalentwiderstand. Die Differenzeingangsspannung (vd) wird als Differenz zwischen der Spannung des nichtinvertierenden Anschlusses relativ zur Erde und der Spannung des invertierenden Anschlusses relativ zur Erde berechnet. Der Operationsverstärker erkennt die Differenz zwischen diesen beiden Eingängen und verstärkt sie um die Verstärkung A und erzeugt so eine Spannung, die am Ausgang erscheint. Hier stellt A die Spannungsverstärkung im offenen Regelkreis dar – so genannt, weil sie die Verstärkung des Operationsverstärkers ohne externe Rückkopplung vom Ausgang zum Eingang angibt. Rückkopplung ist ein wesentliches Konzept, das es bei der Untersuchung von Operationsverstärkerschaltungen zu verstehen gilt. Eine negative Rückkopplung kann erreicht werden, indem der Ausgang zum invertierenden Anschluss des Operationsverstärkers zurückgeführt wird. Wenn ein Rückkopplungspfad vom Ausgang zum Eingang vorhanden ist, wird das resultierende Verhältnis der Ausgangsspannung zur Eingangsspannung als Verstärkung im geschlossenen Regelkreis bezeichnet. Der Operationsverstärker hat seine praktischen Grenzen. Eine solche Einschränkung besteht darin, dass die Größe seiner Ausgangsspannung |VCC| nicht überschreiten darf. Im Wesentlichen bestimmt und begrenzt die Versorgungsspannung die Ausgangsspannung. Abhängig von der Differenzeingangsspannung kann der Operationsverstärker in einem von drei Modi arbeiten: positive Sättigung, linearer Bereich oder negative Sättigung. Wenn versucht wird, vd über den linearen Bereich hinaus zu erhöhen, erreicht der Operationsverstärker die Sättigung, was entweder vo = VCC oder vo = -VCC ergibt.

An operational amplifier, or op-amp, is an electronic circuit component used with other circuit parts to carry out a signal-processing task. It is often described with an equivalent circuit model. In that model, the output section includes a voltage-controlled source in parallel with the output resistance, R o.

The model also shows the input resistance, R i, which is the Thevenin equivalent resistance seen at the input terminals. The differential input voltage, v d, is the difference between the noninverting terminal voltage and the inverting terminal voltage, both measured relative to ground. The op-amp compares these two input voltages and amplifies the difference by the gain A to produce an output voltage.

A is called the open-loop voltage gain because it describes the op-amp without feedback from the output back to the input. Feedback is important in op-amp circuits. Negative feedback is created by connecting the output to the inverting terminal. When that feedback path exists, the output-to-input ratio is the closed-loop gain.

Op-amps also have practical limits. Their output voltage cannot exceed the magnitude of the supply voltage, |VCC|. The power supply sets this limit. Depending on the differential input voltage, the op-amp can operate in positive saturation, the linear region, or negative saturation. If v d is pushed beyond the linear range, the output saturates at either v o = VCC or v o = -VCC.
