Vektorgrößen sind physikalische Größen, die sowohl Größe als auch Richtung haben.
Die Größe ist die Größe oder Menge einer Größe, und die Richtung ist die Ausrichtung im Raum.
Um beispielsweise eine Tür zu öffnen, wird eine bestimmte Kraft in eine bestimmte Richtung ausgeübt. Daher ist die Kraft eine Vektorgröße.
Das Gewicht eines Objekts, d. h. die Kraft, die aufgrund der Schwerkraft auf einen Körper ausgeübt wird, ist eine Vektorgröße.
Vektoren werden als fettgedruckte, kursive Buchstaben mit einem Pfeil darüber dargestellt. Die Größe wird mit dem gleichen Vektorsymbol zwischen vertikalen Balken oder mit kursiven Buchstaben angegeben.
Geometrisch werden Vektoren durch eine Linie mit einem Pfeil dargestellt, der ihre Richtung anzeigt, und Länge, die ihre Größe angibt.
Die Verschiebung eines Objekts von den Punkten A nach B wird mit einem Pfeil dargestellt, der bei A beginnt und bei B endet, und der Vektor wird als Vektor DAB bezeichnet.

Zwei Vektoren sind gleich, wenn sie die gleiche Größe und Richtung haben.
Das Negativ eines Vektors erhält man, indem man seine Richtung umkehrt.
Wenn zwei Vektoren in die gleiche Richtung zeigen, sind sie parallel. Wenn sie in entgegengesetzte Richtungen zeigen, sind sie antiparallel.

Beispiele für Vektorgrößen sind Verschiebung, Geschwindigkeit, Position, Kraft und Drehmoment. In der Sprache der Mathematik werden diese physikalischen Vektorgrößen durch mathematische Objekte namens Vektoren dargestellt. Wir bezeichnen Vektorgrößen mit einem kursiven Buchstaben mit einem Pfeil darüber. Eine Größe, die nur einen Betrag und keine Richtung hat, ist eine skalare Größe. Daher ist Gewicht eine Vektorgröße, während Masse eine skalare Größe ist. Ebenso ist Geschwindigkeit eine skalare Größe, während Durchschnittsgeschwindigkeit eine Vektorgröße ist.

Angenommen, Sie erzählen einem Freund auf einem Campingausflug, dass Sie eine großartige Angelstelle 6 km von Ihrem Zelt entfernt entdeckt haben. Es ist unwahrscheinlich, dass Ihr Freund die Stelle leicht finden kann, es sei denn, Sie geben auch die Richtung an, in der sie von Ihrem Lagerplatz aus zu finden ist. Sie könnten zum Beispiel sagen: "Gehe etwa 6 km nordöstlich von meinem Zelt." Der Schlüsselbegriff hierbei ist, dass Sie zwei Informationen geben müssen, nämlich die Entfernung oder den Betrag (6 km) und die Richtung (nordöstlich). Eine Veränderung der Position, wie zum Beispiel vom Zelt zur Angelstelle in diesem Beispiel, wird als Verschiebung bezeichnet. Dies ist ein Beispiel für eine Vektorgröße. Geometrisch werden Vektoren als Pfeile dargestellt; ihre Länge (die eine positive Zahl ist) gibt den Betrag an, der durch das absolute Wertzeichen um das Symbol, das den Vektor darstellt, angezeigt wird. Die Spitze des Pfeils gibt die Richtung an und die Pfeilspitze markiert den Endpunkt des Vektors.

Zwei Vektoren sind gleich, wenn und nur wenn sie den gleichen Betrag und die gleiche Richtung haben. Zwei Vektoren, die die gleiche Richtung haben, werden als parallele Vektoren bezeichnet - das bedeutet, dass sie parallel zueinander sind. Wenn ein Vektor jedoch in entgegengesetzter Richtung zeigt, genau um 180° zu dem ersten Vektor, werden sie als antiparallel bezeichnet. Zwei Vektoren mit senkrechten Richtungen zueinander werden als orthogonale Vektoren bezeichnet.
