Wenn eine Probe belastet wird, nimmt die Länge zunächst linear und langsam zu, was zu einer anfänglichen Geraden mit einer steilen Steigung im Spannungs-Dehnungs-Diagramm führt.
Bei Erreichen eines kritischen Spannungswerts erfährt die Probe eine erhebliche Verformung mit minimalem Anstieg der aufgebrachten Last, hauptsächlich aufgrund von Schubspannungen, die zu einem Schlupf entlang schräger Oberflächen führen.
Mit zunehmender Belastung verringert sich der Durchmesser des Materials an einer Stelle, die als Einschnürung bezeichnet wird. Nach dem Einschnüren dehnt selbst eine geringe Belastung die Probe weiter aus, bis sie reißt.
Das Fließen ist ein Prozess, bei dem sich das Material plastisch zu verformen beginnt. Die Spannung, bei der die Streckgrenze beginnt, wird als Streckgrenze bezeichnet, während die Spannung, die der maximalen Belastung entspricht, die Bruchfestigkeit und die Bruchspannung die Bruchfestigkeit ist.
Das Spannungs-Dehnungs-Diagramm von Baustahl zeigt eine konstante Nachstreckung aufgrund der Kaltverfestigung, aber die Spannung von Aluminium steigt nichtlinear an.
Die Duktilität des Materials wird durch die prozentuale Dehnung oder die prozentuale Querschnittsflächenreduzierung gemessen. Unter Druck divergieren die Spannungs-Dehnungs-Kurven duktiler Materialien bei höheren Dehnungen, da keine Einschnürung auftritt.

Stress-Strain Diagram - Ductile Materials

Die Spannungs-Dehnungs-Beziehung in duktilen Materialien wie Baustahl oder Aluminium ist komplex und verläuft in mehreren Phasen. Wenn eine Probe belastet wird, weist sie zunächst eine lineare Längenzunahme auf, die durch eine steile Gerade im Spannungs-Dehnungs-Diagramm dargestellt wird. Es zeigt an, dass sich das Material elastisch verformt und nach dem Entladen in seine ursprüngliche Form zurückkehrt. Bei Erreichen eines kritischen Spannungswertes beginnt jedoch die plastische Verformung. In dieser Phase kommt es zu erheblichen Verformungen bei geringer Erhöhung der aufgebrachten Last, hauptsächlich aufgrund von Scherspannungen, die das Gleiten entlang der schrägen Oberflächen des Materials begünstigen. Mit zunehmender Belastung kommt es an einem bestimmten Punkt zu einer Verringerung des Materialdurchmessers, was als Einschnürung bezeichnet wird. Nach der Einschnürung dehnt sich die Probe bereits bei einer geringfügigen Belastungserhöhung erheblich aus, bis sie bricht.

Unter Streckgrenze versteht man in diesem Zusammenhang die spannungsauslösende plastische Verformung. Die Endfestigkeit ist die maximale Belastung, die das Material vor der Einschnürung aushalten kann, und die Bruchfestigkeit ist die Spannung, die zum Bruch führt. Interessanterweise bleibt das Spannungs-Dehnungs-Diagramm von Baustahl aufgrund der Kaltverfestigung nach der Streckgrenze stabil, im Gegensatz zu Aluminium, wo nach der Streckgrenze ein nichtlinearer Spannungsanstieg auftritt. Schließlich wird die Duktilität, die eine signifikante plastische Verformung vor dem Bruch anzeigt, durch die prozentuale Dehnung oder Verringerung der Querschnittsfläche gemessen. Unter Druck divergieren die Spannungs-Dehnungs-Kurven duktiler Materialien bei hohen Dehnungen, da keine Einschnürung auftritt.

Ductile materials such as structural steel and aluminium show a multi-stage stress-strain response. When a specimen is loaded, its length first increases linearly at a slow rate. This produces a steep straight line on the stress-strain diagram. That initial part shows elastic deformation, which means the material returns to its original shape after unloading.

When the stress reaches a critical value, plastic deformation begins. In this stage, the material changes shape a lot while the applied load increases only a little. Shearing stresses help this process by allowing slippage along oblique surfaces in the material.

As loading continues, the specimen may start to narrow in diameter. This is called necking. After necking begins, even a small increase in load can stretch the specimen greatly until it finally ruptures.

The diagram also identifies key strength values. Yield strength is the stress that starts plastic deformation. Ultimate strength is the maximum load the material can carry before necking. Breaking strength is the stress at rupture. Structural steel often shows a steady post-yield region because of strain-hardening, while aluminium shows a non-linear stress increase after yield. Ductility is the ability to undergo large plastic deformation before rupture, and it is measured by percent elongation or reduction in cross-sectional area. Under compression, the stress-strain curves of ductile materials differ at high strains because necking does not occur.
