Spröde Materialien dehnen sich unter Zugspannung nicht stark aus, bevor sie brechen, was bedeutet, dass ihre Bruch- und Bruchfestigkeit identisch sind. Im Vergleich zu duktilen Werkstoffen weisen sie eine geringere Dehnung beim Bruch auf.
Sie tritt entlang einer Oberfläche senkrecht zur Last auf, was darauf hindeutet, dass Normalspannungen den Ausfall in erster Linie verursachen.
Spröde Werkstoffe ziehen sich unter Belastung nicht merklich ein.
Die meisten spröden Materialien haben eine höhere Bruchfestigkeit als eine höhere Zugfestigkeit, hauptsächlich aufgrund mikroskopischer Fehler wie Risse oder Hohlräume, die das Material unter Zug schwächen.
Betrachten Sie ein Spannungs-Dehnungs-Diagramm für die Betonplatte, ein Beispiel für ein sprödes Material.
Unter Zug wird ein linearer Elastizitätsbereich bis zur Streckgrenze beobachtet, und dann steigt die Dehnung schneller als die Spannung, bis die Platte reißt.
Unter Druck weist Beton einen größeren linearen Elastizitätsbereich auf, und es tritt kein Bruch auf, wenn die Spannung ihren Höhepunkt erreicht. Stattdessen nimmt die Spannung ab, während die Dehnung bis zum Bruch weiter zunimmt.
Der Elastizitätsmodul, dargestellt durch die Steigung des linearen Bereichs, ist bei den meisten spröden Materialien sowohl in Bezug auf die Kompression als auch auf die Spannung gleich.

Spröde Materialien wie Glas, Gusseisen und Stein weisen einzigartige Eigenschaften auf. Sie brechen ohne wesentliche Änderung ihrer Dehnungsgeschwindigkeit, was darauf hindeutet, dass ihre Bruch- und Endfestigkeit gleichwertig sind. Außerdem weisen solche Materialien an der Bruchstelle geringere Dehnungen auf. Das Versagen bei spröden Materialien resultiert überwiegend aus Normalspannungen, was durch den Bruch entlang einer Oberfläche senkrecht zur aufgebrachten Last sichtbar wird. Diese Materialien weisen keine nennenswerte Einschnürung auf. Unter Einschnürung versteht man die lokale Verringerung der Querschnittsfläche unter Belastung. Ein interessanter Aspekt der meisten spröden Materialien ist ihre höhere Endfestigkeit bei Druck als bei Zug, was hauptsächlich auf mikroskopische Defekte wie Risse oder Hohlräume zurückzuführen ist, die das Material unter Zugspannung schwächen können, aber nur minimale Auswirkungen auf seine Druckfestigkeit haben.

Beton, ein häufig sprödes Material, verhält sich unter Zug und Druck unterschiedlich. Das Spannungs-Dehnungs-Diagramm unter Spannung zeigt einen linearen elastischen Bereich bis zur Streckgrenze, gefolgt von einem schnellen Spannungsanstieg bis zum Bruch. Im Gegensatz dazu zeigt Beton unter Druck einen größeren linearen elastischen Bereich, und selbst bei Spitzenspannung kommt es nicht zum Bruch. Stattdessen nimmt die Spannung mit zunehmender Dehnung bis zum Bruch ab. Wichtig ist, dass das Elastizitätsmodul, der in der Spannungs-Dehnungs-Kurve durch die Steigung des linearen Abschnitts angezeigt wird, bei den meisten spröden Materialien sowohl bei Zug als auch bei Druck konstant bleibt.

Brittle materials such as glass, cast iron, and stone fail with very little change in elongation. Their breaking strength and ultimate strength are nearly the same, and the strain at rupture is low. In these materials, failure is usually driven by normal stress, so the break surface is typically perpendicular to the applied load.

Brittle materials also show little or no necking. Necking is the local narrowing of a material’s cross section under stress. Another important feature is that many brittle materials are stronger in compression than in tension. Small cracks or cavities can weaken them in tension, but these defects have much less effect when the material is compressed.

Concrete is a common example of a brittle material. Under tension, its stress-strain curve has a linear elastic region up to the yield point, followed by a rapid rise in strain until rupture. Under compression, concrete has a longer linear elastic range, and rupture does not happen at the peak stress. Instead, stress drops as strain keeps increasing until failure.

For most brittle materials, the modulus of elasticity is the same in tension and compression. The modulus of elasticity is the slope of the linear part of the stress-strain curve. This slope shows how stiff the material is in both loading modes.
