Hooke's Law

Das Hookesche Gesetz besagt, dass die auf ein Material ausgeübte Spannung direkt proportional zu der Dehnung ist, die es innerhalb der Elastizitätsgrenze erfährt. Bei duktilen Materialien richtet sich die Elastizitätsgrenze oft nach der Streckgrenze.
Die Proportionalitätskonstante, die als Elastizitätsmodul bezeichnet wird, hat die gleichen Einheiten wie die der Spannung, da die Dehnung eine dimensionslose Größe ist.
Die physikalischen Eigenschaften von Strukturmetallen werden durch das verwendete Herstellungsverfahren beeinflusst. Die Spannungs-Dehnungs-Diagramme von reinem Eisen und drei verschiedenen Stahlsorten zeigen signifikante Unterschiede in der Streckgrenze, der Bruchfestigkeit und dem Bruchpunkt.
Sie besitzen jedoch den gleichen Elastizitätsmodul: Ihre Steifigkeit im linearen Bereich ist gleich. Wenn also ein Stahl mit höherer Festigkeit in einer Struktur mit den gleichen Abmessungen durch einen Stahl mit niedrigerer Festigkeit ersetzt wird, hat er eine erhöhte Tragfähigkeit.
In isotropen Materialien, wie z. B. Metallen, ist das Spannungs-Dehnungs-Verhältnis unabhängig von der Lastrichtung. Bei anisotropen Materialien, wie z. B. Faserverbundwerkstoffen, unterscheiden sich die Elastizitätsmodule jedoch deutlich in den Richtungen parallel und senkrecht zu den Fasern, woraus sich unterschiedliche Belastungswiderstände ergeben.

Das Hookesche Gesetz, ein zentrales Prinzip der Materialwissenschaft, besagt, dass die Dehnung, der ein Material ausgesetzt ist, direkt proportional zur ausgeübten Spannung ist, die durch einen Faktor definiert wird, der Elastizitätsmodul oder Young-Modul genannt wird.

Die Umsetzung des Hookeschen Gesetzes gilt so lange, bis das Material seine Proportionalitätsgrenze erreicht. Ab diesem Punkt wird die Spannungs-Dehnungs-Beziehung nichtlinear. Diese Grenze fällt häufig mit der Streckgrenze für Materialien zusammen, die von Natur aus duktil sind. Aufgrund der Nichtlinearität der Spannungs-Dehnungs-Beziehung kann es jedoch schwierig sein, diese Grenze für andere Materialtypen zu ermitteln.

Materialien werden anhand ihrer mechanischen Eigenschaften in zwei Haupttypen eingeteilt, z. B. isotrop und anisotrop. Isotrope Materialien wie Metalle weisen unabhängig von der Belastungsrichtung gleichbleibende Eigenschaften auf. Daher bleibt ihr Spannungs-Dehnungs-Verhältnis, einschließlich des Elastizitätsmoduls, unabhängig von der Richtung der ausgeübten Spannung konstant. Andererseits weisen anisotrope Materialien wie faserverstärkte Verbundwerkstoffe mechanische Eigenschaften auf, die von der Lastrichtung abhängen. Diese Materialien bestehen aus Fasern eines robusten Materials, eingebettet in eine weichere Matrix. Stress-strain limits in materials explain how solids respond when force is applied. Stress is the applied force per area, and strain is the change in shape or size that results. In the elastic range, strain stays directly proportional to stress. The constant that connects them is called the modulus of elasticity, or Young's modulus.

This linear behavior continues only up to the proportional limit. After that point, the stress-strain relationship becomes nonlinear. For ductile materials, this limit often matches the yield point. For other materials, finding that point can be difficult because the curve no longer follows a simple pattern.

Materials can also be grouped as isotropic or anisotropic based on how their mechanical behavior changes with direction. Isotropic materials, such as metals, have the same properties no matter which way the load is applied. Their stress-strain response and modulus of elasticity stay constant with direction.

Anisotropic materials behave differently. Fiber-reinforced composites are one example. They contain strong fibers inside a softer matrix, and their modulus of elasticity changes depending on whether the load is parallel or perpendicular to the fibers. These materials are strongest when the fibers line up with the direction of the load.
