Wenn ein schlanker Stab axial belastet wird, wird der Stabwerkstoff axial gedehnt, wodurch er sich in axialer Richtung verformt.
Gleichzeitig erfährt das Material eine Querdehnung, die sich in Richtungen verformt, die senkrecht zur axialen Belastung verlaufen.
Es wird davon ausgegangen, dass das Material homogen und isotrop ist, wodurch seine mechanischen Eigenschaften unabhängig von der Lage und Richtung sind. Die Dehnung in jeder Querrichtung muss also den gleichen Wert haben.
Die Poissonzahl ist eine fundamentale Konstante, die definiert ist als das negative Verhältnis der lateralen Dehnung und der axialen Dehnung, die durch die aufgebrachte Last für ein bestimmtes Material induziert wird.
Das verwendete negative Vorzeichen dient dazu, einen positiven Wert für die Poissonzahl zu erhalten, da axiale und laterale Dehnungen entgegengesetzte Vorzeichen haben.
Materialien mit einer hohen Poissonzahl neigen dazu, bei axialen Belastungen eine stärkere Querkontraktion zu erfahren, während Materialien mit einem niedrigen Verhältnis tendenziell weniger betroffen sind.
Gummi hat zum Beispiel eine Poissonzahl von nahe 0,5, was bedeutet, dass er fast so viel seitliche Kontraktion wie axiale Dehnung erfährt.

Die Poissonzahl ist eine Materialeigenschaft, die ihre Stressreaktion angibt. Diese Informationen helfen dabei, Strukturen so zu entwerfen, dass sie den erwarteten Belastungen standhalten und Ausfälle vermeiden. Zusammenfassend lässt sich sagen, dass die Poissonzahl ein Schlüsselmerkmal von Materialien ist, das für die Vorhersage ihres Verhaltens unter Belastung unerlässlich ist. Die anisotropen Materialien haben unterschiedliche Poisson-Verhältnisse in verschiedenen Richtungen, und Kork hat bekanntermaßen in einer Richtung ein Poisson-Verhältnis von Null.

Poisson's Ratio

Poisson's ratio describes how a material changes shape when it is pulled or compressed along one direction. It links the strain in the direction of the force to the strain that happens sideways. When a slender bar is loaded axially, it stretches along the load and contracts laterally.

Poisson's ratio is defined as the negative ratio of lateral contraction to axial elongation. The negative sign is used because the two strains usually have opposite signs. This keeps the ratio positive and makes it easier to compare materials.

The value of Poisson's ratio affects how a material behaves under stress. Materials with high Poisson's ratios, such as rubber, can contract sideways almost as much as they elongate lengthwise. Rubber has a Poisson's ratio near 0.5.

Knowing this ratio helps predict how much a material will compress in the lateral direction when an axial load is applied. That prediction is useful in design because it helps structures handle expected stresses and avoid failure. Some anisotropic materials have different Poisson's ratios in different directions, and cork is known to have a zero Poisson ratio in one direction.
