Stellen Sie sich ein Bauteil vor, das aus einem elastoplastischen Material mit rechteckigem Querschnitt besteht. Innerhalb der Elastizitätsgrenze ist die Spannungsverteilung über den Querschnitt linear.
Mit zunehmendem Biegemoment nimmt die maximale Spannung im Stab zu. Das maximale Biegemoment wird beobachtet, wenn die Verformung im Stab vollelastisch bleibt.
Das maximale elastische Moment des Abschnitts kann berechnet werden, indem das Verhältnis des Trägheitsmoments und der Länge des Abschnitts ersetzt wird.
Mit einer weiteren Erhöhung des Biegemoments erfolgt die plastische Verformung gleichmäßig, jedoch mit entgegengesetzten Spannungen in der oberen und unteren Zone. Die elastischen Kerne befinden sich in plastischen Zonen, und die Spannung für elastische Kerne variiert linear mit der Dicke. 
Das Biegemoment, das der Spannung innerhalb der elastischen Kerne entspricht, kann analytisch mit der Gleichung für das maximale elastische Moment geschätzt werden.
Wenn das Biegemoment weiter auf den Grenzwert erhöht wird, wird die Verformung vollständig plastisch, und das plastische Moment des Bauteils wird als maximales elastisches Moment ausgedrückt.

Das Verhalten elastoplastischer Materialien unter Biegebeanspruchung, insbesondere in Strukturbauteilen mit rechteckigen Querschnitten, ist entscheidend für die Vorhersage von Materialreaktionen und das Verständnis von Versagensarten. Während dieser Phase kann das Biegemoment noch analysiert werden, indem die anfänglichen Berechnungen für die elastische Spannungsverteilung angepasst werden, um die reduzierte effektive Fläche zu berücksichtigen.

Die letzte Phase der Biegereaktion tritt ein, wenn die Verformung über den gesamten Querschnitt vollständig plastisch wird, was als plastisches Moment bezeichnet wird. Dieses Moment ist das Maximum, das der Abschnitt aushalten kann, und liegt deutlich über der Elastizitätsgrenze. Das plastische Moment wird unter der Annahme einer gleichmäßigen Spannungsverteilung bei der Streckgrenze über den gesamten Abschnitt berechnet.

Elastoplastic members under bending show a clear change in stress as the load increases. For a rectangular cross-section, the first response is elastic. The stress follows Hooke's Law and forms a linear pattern across the section.

In this early stage, stress grows from the neutral axis to the outer fibers. The outer fibers reach the elastic limit first because they carry the highest stress. The inner part of the section stays elastic while the bending moment remains in this range.

When the bending moment becomes larger, the outer fibers begin to yield. Plastic zones then form at the top and bottom of the section. A smaller elastic core still remains in the middle, and stress there continues to vary linearly across the reduced thickness.

The bending moment in this mixed stage can still be studied by adjusting the elastic stress calculation for the smaller effective area. As loading continues, the whole cross-section can become fully plastic. That final condition is called the plastic moment, and it is the maximum moment the section can carry. It is much higher than the elastic limit and is found by assuming a uniform stress distribution at the yield stress across the entire section.
